Blake just graduated from college and wants to upgrade his old Jetta with something sturdy that can handle long drives. With a budget of about $20,000, he would like good MPGs, a respectable stereo, and a comfortable interior. What car should he buy?

Here is the scenario.
I'm a 23 year old recent college grad living on my own in Austin. I currently drive a 2011 VW Jetta that has a ton of computer and brake issues, that would cost more to repair than the car is worth. I want something reliable that I don't constantly have to worry whether it can survive a 2 hour trip.
I want something relatively new with low miles, that I can keep for a little while. I would also like good gas mileage, easy-to-use infotainment, good sound system, prefer leather (easy-to-clean interior) My budget is around $20,000.

Now that you are off into the "real world" you don't want to be stressing about having a car to get you where you need to go. While you may be tempted to opt for a tried and true Honda or Toyota product, selecting that leather seat option is going to mean a higher-mile car that is a bit older with no warranty remaining.
My suggestion would be a Hyundai Elantra. A worthy competitor to the Civic and Corolla but you get to use some depreciation to your advantage at the sub-$20,000 price point, especially if you want a well-equipped model. The Elantra is a comfortable cruiser even for a compact and comes nicely optioned even at the base trim. The four-cylinder motor will return up to 40 MPG on the highway, which is pretty impressive for a non-hybrid. Here is a Limited model for just under $20,000. This has leather seats, a BOSE stereo system in addition to all the infotainment and safety tech features you could ask for.
You're young and the future is uncertain, why choose something boring when you could have a little fun with it? Get yourself a nice Mustang to drive around. Not only will you have something stylish and fun to drive, but the 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine pumps out 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to get into a little trouble, but it's still reasonably frugal delivering up to 31 miles per gallon on the highway. There's a nice leather interior and beautiful blue paint on this one. There are lower-mileage examples out there, but with just 67,000 miles on the odometer it should still have plenty of life left in it, and the price is too good to pass up. Just seventeen thousand dollars separates you from your next (cool) daily driver. Make it happen.
Well, Blake, you're in luck because not too long ago, a friend's younger brother (and admittedly, my favorite of the two) had the exact same question. He didn't live in Austin, but he even had an identical budget. I tried offering a few more enthusiast-focused suggestions, but in the end, he bought a Honda Insight that he's been perfectly happy with.
Sure, you could always get a Toyota Prius, but everyone thinks "Prius" when they hear "hybrid," which means the Insight flies under the radar, and there's a good chance you'll be able to negotiate a better deal since so few people even remember Honda brought back the Insight for another generation in the first place. Since you're just starting your career, the Honda badge is also a bonus. It's the kind of car you're "supposed" to drive, unlike, say, a heavily depreciated BMW that may have cost less but still looks fancy. You shouldn't have to think about this kind of stuff because it's so stupid, but coworkers gossip, and people think a luxury badge automatically means you spent a lot of money. I hate it, too, but it never hurts to give your new coworkers something to gossip about.
Here's one that isn't too far away and also looks like it ticks all your boxes. It's a 2020 model with 82,000 miles, making it far newer than your Jetta, and even with a decent number of miles on it, you'll be able to keep it for years. The Touring trim also offers all the features you could possibly want, including that leather interior, while still staying within budget and getting great gas mileage since it's a hybrid. It also looks better than a used Prius, and that's a win for everyone.

Tomorrow's BMW 3 Series Will Make Today's M3 Sweat
An electric incarnation of the next BMW M3 was recently seen lapping Germany's Nürburgring, replete with the next-gen styling that was previewed by concepts like the i Vision Dee and Vision Neue Klasse. Now, it's the turn of the hottest non-M 3er to get a workout around the Green Hell, and it's going to bring with it more than just a fresh face as it chases after AMG C43s and Audi S5s. According to our spies - and common sense - BMW will be pushing the highly capable B58 turbocharged straight-six engine further with the next M340i, which, like other recent non-M updates, will include a new name: M350. Say goodbye to the 'i' suffix - it was confusing buyers who thought these cars might be electric, but that's inevitable when your naming strategy is confined to 10 digits and 26 letters, most of which are unused... The latest version of the M340i currently generates a peak of 386 horsepower - up from the previous limit of 382 hp, but as the JDM-spec Toyota GR Supra Final Edition proves, BMW's six-cylinder can handle much more. In that application, it delivers up to 429 hp, but our spies say to expect only around 400 in the M350. With a production commencement date expected to be around November next year, and any future M3 likely to deliver close to 600 hp, BMW could either choose to launch the M350 with as much as Toyota has extracted, or it could play the game the same way as it has with this G20 generation: start small and deliver more later. With emissions legislation varying on either side of the Atlantic and across the U.S., saving some performance could be prudent - even though hybridization is inevitable. For the 3 Series, the reconstructive surgery at the front will make the biggest impact, with the iconic kidney grille design being reinvented once more to shroud the headlights. It's bold, but elegant, and at the rear, we expect BMW to go with a classic rectangular light bar, which hasn't been so simple since the E30. And in the middle, a Hofmeister kink of sorts will continue at the C-pillar. Inside, BMW Panoramic Vision will take the tech up a notch and the physical switchgear down one or two, but the engineers won't let us close enough to see the cabin yet, so we'll have to wait a little while to see just how much changes, from the dashboard to the seats. Ever since the Chris Bangle 'flame surfacing' era, BMW has leaned further and further into grabbing attention by mixing traditional styling tropes with, shall we say, 'adventurous' modernism. Yet, no matter how far BMW pushes into the unknown, after a few years or less, the styling tends to grow on the average person - at least when it comes to sedans. For this new era, BMW will advance the design even more intentionally than the jump from the F- to G-Series; the company's presentations on styling have always made the point that the Neue Klasse vehicles being introduced from the second half of the decade will look like they "skipped a generation." But this time, we doubt there will be as much controversy. Not only do the concepts mentioned at the outset look well-proportioned, but despite what BMW says, the most recent M5 has already begun to take on the straight, sharp lines of those design studies, while taller vehicles like the X1 and X3 have similarly begun to look like the Vision Neue Klasse X SUV concept, helping all who see them mentally bridge the gap between current and future cars. That means the acclimatization period for future designs won't be long. And neither will the wait; with production supposedly commencing late 2026, prototypes will shed more camouflage through the year as production lighting and wheels are fitted, and we should start seeing teaser campaigns late this year or early next. Toyota willing to sell US-made vehicles in Japan
Toyota Motor Corporation has suggested it is willing to sell US-made vehicles in Japan through its domestic dealer networks to help the Japanese government in its trade negotiations with the US government, according to local reports. Japan's leading automaker hopes such a measure will help the two governments reach a more amicable solution in their forthcoming trade negotiations, after the US government imposed an additional 25% tariff on Japanese vehicle imports in April. Such a move by Toyota, and possibly by other Japanese automakers, would help reduce the US' substantial trade deficit with Japan. Japan was the second-largest exporter of vehicles to the US last year after Mexico, with almost 1.5 million vehicles exported - worth some US$ 41 billion. Very few vehicles were exported in the opposite direction. Toyota and Lexus sales in Japan amounted to 1.44 million units last year, across a network of some 4,000 sales outlets. Almost all of these vehicles were produced locally. The Japanese government's chief tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, is expected to visit the US this week to conduct tariff and trade negotiations. Could the New Honda Prelude Spark a Comeback for Other Sport Coupes?
With the imminent arrival of Honda's resurrected Prelude sparking enthusiasm worldwide, its reception still remains divided over whether a hybrid-powered, CVT-equipped two-door coupe is a worthwhile successor to the now legendary nameplate. Honda's bold strategy to offer a personal compact coupe with mechanical furnishings not far off from that of a Toyota Prius, combined with simulated shift points and flappy paddles to add a sense of excitement, is a move that has drawn plenty of skepticism. However, the way in which it plays out could permanently alter the way that affordable sports cars are marketed. If the upcoming Honda Prelude's development strategy proves popular, perhaps we could see other manufacturers offering their own compact sport coupes with running gear borrowed from more frugal models. If Honda's upcoming Prelude proves to be a sales success, it could prompt rival automakers to resurrect their own iconic compact sport coupes with similar hybridized powertrains and simulated excitement, allowing them to once again offer fun-focused models without having to develop entirely new powertrains and platforms. Using generative text-to-image artificial intelligence and Adobe Photoshop, we take an imagined look at what some hypothetically revived compact sport coupes could look like from a variety of manufacturers. These renders in no way resemble any actual products and are exclusively for speculative and entertainment purposes. Taking style inspiration from the polarizing Hyundai Ioniq 6, reviving the Tiburon nameplate could be an excellent way for Hyundai to take on Honda's upcoming Prelude. The Korean automaker has come an extremely long way since the Tiburon was discontinued from its lineup back in 2008, and an all-new Tiburon could provide an excellent opportunity to show off just how much progress they've made. Equipped with the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which, when paired with a 51-kW electric motor, makes 192 horsepower in the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, the revived Tiburon could directly mirror the Prelude's development philosophy, albeit with Hyundai tech and engineering, and a genuine six-speed automatic transmission instead of a CVT. For the purist enthusiasts out there, the development of a revived Tiburon sport coupe could also open up the opportunity for a more hardened performance variant, possibly powered by the same 276-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Hyundai Elantra N, paired with the buyer's choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. With these two hypothetical variants, the resurrected Hyundai Tiburon could cover a lot of enthusiast ground, appealing to both the hardcore purists and progressive, athletic modernists alike. A true Fast & Furious icon, the Mitsubishi Eclipse was once one of the most desirable compact sport coupes on the market, combining daily driver practicality with agile handling and torquey, turbocharged powertrain options. Reviving the Eclipse nameplate could go a long way towards rejuvenating Mitsubishi's brand image, which has lost plenty of steam in recent years thanks to the automaker's discontinuation of every single remotely exciting model from its lineup. Diluted with monotonous crossovers, Mitsubishi needs something to remind the world that it's still in business. Whether it employs a modified variant of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV's plug-in hybrid 2.4-liter four-cylinder powertrain or something juicier and turbocharged, we'd love to see something spicy back in Mitsubishi's portfolio of automobiles. Enthusiasts have been begging Toyota for a new Celica since the model was discontinued in 2006, and recent rumors suggest that their cries may soon be answered. Whether it will equip a similar, 300-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine as found in the GR Corolla, or a Prius-sourced, 196-horsepower hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive, we're eagerly awaiting more information about Toyota's rumored upcoming sports coupe. As Honda's official release of the resurrected Prelude nears ever closer, we can't help but feel nostalgic about the glory days of the personal compact sport coupe, a segment that reigned supreme throughout the 1980s and '90s in North America. It seemed every manufacturer offered a small, sporty coupe of their own, reflecting an appreciation for frugal fun that seems to have been lost to the sands of time ever since. When the all-new Prelude returns, and if it proves popular, it's possible that we could see a resurgence of compact sporty coupes, albeit with an entirely modernized philosophy.
