Sparkling bright future for fireflies in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The vulnerable firefly population is a key focus of the Fauna Biodiversity Programme at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), which is conducting several research studies to help conserve the species in the country.
Programme head Dr Nada Badruddin said fireflies are threatened by environmental factors including riverbank erosion, solid waste pollution, land clearing for agriculture and artificial light pollution, which disrupts their light signals used to attract mates.
In a statement, she said climate change also has the potential to impact the insects' habitat through flooding, drought, temperature changes and disruptions to their bioluminescence.
'Protecting the natural habitat of fireflies is not only essential for preserving these natural treasures but also contributes to the local economy through ecotourism activities and supports sustainable development for both people and the environment,' she said, Bernama reported.
The statement was issued in conjunction with World Firefly Day, celebrated annually on the first weekend of July.
Under the Fauna Biodiversity Programme, she said, the focus includes biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, insect conservation and leading national firefly conservation research efforts.
Nada noted that research on the Pteroptyx tener species, which is dominant along Sungai Selangor in Kuala Selangor, involves breeding the insects in a laboratory setting to better understand their life cycle, habitat needs, and the predatory behaviour of their larvae.
She added that FRIM has also identified specific habitat needs, such as the availability of snails as a primary food source for larvae and suitable areas for egg-laying.
Efforts to develop firefly-friendly monitoring methods began around 2006 to 2007 and were carried out monthly at seven permanent monitoring stations along the river until 2023.

Malaysia, ASEAN Members Work Closely To Advance Safe, Regulated Nuclear Technology
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 14 (Bernama) – Malaysia has been working closely with ASEAN member countries to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and regulated use of nuclear technology in the region. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said various initiatives, including capacity-building programmes, technical exchanges, and strategic collaborations, have strengthened regional preparedness and resilience against emerging challenges. 'None of these achievements would have been possible without your (ASEAN members') longstanding support and collaboration,' he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) here today. Also present were Atom Malaysia director-general Noraishah Pungut and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute director Dr Carlo Abundo Arcilla. Mohammad Yusof said Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEANTOM this year, remains fully committed to ASEANTOM's shared goals and will continue to contribute actively as a dedicated member. He said this is in line with the official theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', under which Malaysia will ensure that no one is left behind and that every ASEAN citizen benefits from the region's progress and sustainability. 'While promoting development that safeguards our environment and ensures long-term prosperity for generations to come, may our continued collaboration also pave the way for a safer, more innovative, and sustainable future for all,' he said. Mohammad Yusof also stressed that the spirit of unity, trust, and cooperation that defines ASEAN and the ASEANTOM must continue so that the peace and prosperity of the region can be maintained. Earlier, at the closing ceremony of the meeting, Malaysia officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEANTOM to the Philippines, marking the end of its term as chair.

i-CompEx Can Be Platform To Attract Interest In New Technologies, Innovations
JITRA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The International Innovation and Invention Competition Through Exhibition (i-CompEx) programme, which has been held 13 times, is seen as becoming increasingly 'mature' and has received good participation from domestic and overseas institutions. Deputy Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the competition and innovation exhibition could serve as a platform to attract public interest, particularly the younger generation, in new technologies and creating innovations. "I was told that the jury had a tough time deciding on the winner this time because it was very competitive, so this means the i-CompEx has matured after 13 editions. "So, it means the quality of participation in the i-CompEx has reached quite a good level compared to when it was introduced,' he told reporters after the i-CompEx 2025 closing ceremony here today. According to him, the participation of students from primary and secondary schools, as well as the various government agencies and departments, could encourage innovations that will benefit society in this country. "So, I feel that this is crucial as a catalyst for ideas and also interests among the people, particularly the younger generation, who we must expose to new technologies from as early as primary school days. "This is to attract their interest to follow fields related to new technologies, such as AI (artificial intelligence), when they get into universities later,' he said. The i-CompEx 2025, jointly organised with the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Polytechnic (POLIMAS) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, involved participants from several foreign countries, including Saudi Arabia, China, the United Kingdom, Thailand and Indonesia. A total of 401 innovation projects from various institutions in Malaysia and overseas took part in the two-day i-CompEx 2025, which ended today.
