300 acres of encroached forest land cleared at Bukkapatna wildlife sanctuary
The cleared land includes 209 acres of reserve forest in Muthugadahalli and additional forest land previously handed over to the horticulture department. The operation was conducted under the leadership of the Chief Conservator of Forests of the Hassan-Tumakuru division, with support from the police department.
The land in question, located in Survey No. 46 of Muthugadahalli Ambarapura, was originally declared as forest land by the Mysuru Maharajas in 1926 under the Mysore Forest Act. However, over the years, parts of this forest were illegally allotted to individuals and encroached upon. The matter was taken to the Karnataka High Court, which ordered the preservation of the area as forest land. Despite court orders, revenue officials failed to cancel the illegal land allotments, prompting a complaint to the Lokayukta. Acting on the Lokayukta's directives, the encroached land was recently re-notified in the name of the Forest Department, making today's clearance operation possible.
Minister Khandre emphasized that forest land cannot be diverted for any other purpose unless officially denotified and urged officials and the public to understand and uphold this principle. He extended his congratulations to the officers and forest staff involved in the successful operation and reaffirmed the government's commitment to forest conservation.

"The Vigilance Department has not got any communication from the government on the appointment of new Lokayukta. The government has to shortlist the candidates, based on which concurrence of the High Court is sought," informed sources close to the development. The appointment process requires a three-member committee, comprising the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, to finalize the selection once a suitable candidate is identified. Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao confirmed the stagnation, stating, "There is no development on it so far. Will be raising the matter with the Chief Minister shortly." Misra, whose term ended in September 2020, leaving 75 cases pending at that time. Before Joshi's appointment, Justice (retd) U.V. Bakre had initially been shortlisted but withdrew his consent in March 2021 citing personal reasons. Most of the currently pending cases reportedly involve corruption in illegal constructions and the issuance of various permissions. Before the end of his term, Justice Misra had highlighted the perceived weaknesses in Goa's Lokayukta Act, noting that it lacked the robust powers enjoyed by its counterparts in states like Karnataka and Kerala. Goa's first Lokayukta, Justice (retd) Sudershan Reddy, had also resigned within seven months of his 2013 appointment, citing personal reasons, leading to a nearly three-year vacancy before Justice Misra's appointment in April 2016. To facilitate appointments, the State government had amended the Lokayukta Act in 2021, allowing for the appointment of retired high court judges after facing difficulties in securing retired Supreme Court judges or High Court chief justices for the post.

28 lakh saplings to be planted in five districts of KK region, says Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre
The Forest Department has set a target of planting 28 lakh saplings in five districts of Kalyana Karnataka region with the aim of increasing the forest and tree cover area in the region, Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar Khandre has announced. He was speaking at the launching of 'Hasiru Patha-Karnataka' and 'Hasiru Hejje-Kalaburagi' programmes under Vanamahotsava-2025 in Kalaburagi city on Saturday. Mr. Khandre said that the Kalyana Karnataka region has less than 5% forest cover; to increase the green cover in the region the Forest Department has launched a massive plantation drive with a target of planting 28 lakh saplings, which includes seven lakh young trees, in five districts of Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, and Koppal. He explained that reduction of forest cover drives climate change and further contributes to global warming and alters weather patterns, so tree plantation initiatives are crucial for raising environment awareness and combating issues like deforestation, soil erosion, floods and droughts; so the department has launched 'Manegondu Mara, Urigondu Vana' [One tree for every home, one forest for every Village] programme for conducting awareness campaigns to encourage people about tree plantation. The Forest Department had planted 8.5 crore saplings in the State in the last two years and this year the department has set a target to plant three crore saplings across the State, Mr. Khandre highlighting that the post-plantation maintenance is crucial for tree survival, said that each saplings will be geo-tagged with a survey number which will be monitored by third-party private agency. The Minister said that efforts are underway to establish wildlife sanctuaries, parks, zoos in Kalaburagi district, and the department was planning to develop an eco-tourism park in Chandrampalli in Chincholi taluk. AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge, legislators B.R. Patil, M.Y. Patil, Allamprabhu Patil, Thippannappa Kamaknoor and Jagdev Guttedar were present.

Karnataka HC stays BJP defamation case against Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, state Congress
The Karnataka High Court on Friday stayed a defamation case filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and the Congress' state unit, Bar and Bench reported. Justice SR Krishna Kumar heard preliminary arguments in the matter, and stayed the proceedings till the case is heard next. The judge issued a notice to the BJP, and adjourned the hearing till July 29, the Deccan Herald reported. The case pertains to allegations by the Congress that the previous BJP government in Karnataka took bribes from contractors. The Congress was elected to power in the state in 2023, displacing the BJP government. The BJP filed the defamation case against the Congress, party leader Rahul Gandhi and Shivakumar, objecting to newspaper advertisements with allegedly derogatory allegations about the previous BJP government between 2019 and 2023. The Congress had alleged that the government was charging a 40% commission or bribes from contractors for undertaking public works. The BJP alleged that the Congress was spreading false claims against its members, including the then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. The High Court had stayed proceedings against Gandhi in the case on January 17. The advertisements based on which the BJP filed the defamation case accused the previous government in Karnataka of having looted Rs 1,500 crore through corrupt practices like charging commissions. They also alleged that the government had put in place 'rate cards' for bribes that purportedly had to be paid to secure government posts.
