Nurul Izzah calls for urgent action against online child sexual exploitation
PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has issued an urgent call for coordinated government action against online child sexual exploitation following the recent exposure of a Facebook group containing explicit content involving primary school children.
In a statement today, Nurul Izzah described the discovery of the 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah' Facebook group, which had over 12,000 members consuming sexually explicit content involving children, as 'not just an alarming incident' but 'a national disgrace.'
The statement comes after Nurul Izzah herself was targeted with online gang rape threats in January, with the perpetrator formally charged on June 18, for publishing 11 obscene and offensive criminal threats.
Nurul Izzah called for immediate action from several government agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM).
Her demands include requiring MCMC to outline monitoring mechanisms for detecting online child exploitation, public reports from KPWKM and PDRM on similar cases, and a detailed implementation update of the Online Safety Act to be tabled in Parliament.
She also called for Parliament briefs on the effectiveness of the special D11 sexual crimes unit established a year ago, suggesting Malaysia emulate international police cooperation networks like ELIPSIA, which operates across 18 countries in Latin America and Europe.
According to official 2023 data cited in the statement, child sexual crime cases have risen by 26.5%, while child pornography cases surged by an alarming 139.3%.
'These are not just numbers. They are a collective cry for immediate, systemic reform, not just well-worded laws that gather dust,' Nurul Izzah stated.
In line with these developments, PKR announced the launch of a comprehensive grassroots campaign focusing on raising awareness against child sexual exploitation, community-led support teams, and collaborations with NGOs and educational institutions.
The campaign will include awareness counters in public spaces and direct involvement of community leaders in advocacy and monitoring efforts.
Nurul Izzah also called for easier public access to the Child Sexual Offender Registry established in 2019 and enhanced health education curricula incorporating online safety awareness in schools.
The statement concluded with a call for shared responsibility among parents, teachers, religious leaders, NGOs, and social media users to confront what she described as 'a growing digital threat.'

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Syria, Azerbaijan and Yemen on the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye on Sunday. 'Reformasi or Reformati: The collapse of meritocracy in PKR warrants an alternative leadership'
IT doesn't take a doctoral thesis on the sociology of cronyism and nepotism to recognise that Nurul Izzah Anwar's recent victory as PKR deputy president was heavily influenced by her status as the daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the party's President. While Nurul Izzah enjoys popularity when it comes to political acumen and strategic capability, she is nowhere near the calibre of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, the former deputy president who has long been regarded as the party's analytical powerhouse and policy visionary. Had the delegates to the party election been better schooled in rejecting favouritism and nepotism, the outcome might have been very different. In such a scenario, it's likely Nurul would have lost to Rafizi. Anwar may argue that, unlike his wife who was appointed as an advisor, Nurul Izzah was elected and therefore her win does not constitute nepotism. But this is a simplistic argument – one akin to the Tamil proverb of trying to hide a pumpkin under a heap of cooked rice. The influence of family ties in her victory is too obvious to ignore. That Rafizi was reduced to political irrelevance in this contest – despite his instrumental role in building PKR and sustaining the reformasi movement – speaks volumes about the rot within. Let us not forget that it was Rafizi and others like him who injected the Reformasi movement with real momentum and eventually shaping it into the political force that eventually brought PKR to power. This betrayal of meritocracy in favour of dynastic preference not only diminishes Rafizi's contributions, it tarnishes the very ideals the Reformasi movement was meant to uphold. Criticising nepotism does not mean dismissing Nurul Izzah's efforts, particularly her resilience during the period when Anwar was incarcerated on dubious charges. She played a symbolic role. But it would have been wiser –and more credible – for her to defend her vice-presidency rather than vault straight to the deputy presidency under such controversial circumstances. Regrettably, Anwar seems to lack the patience to implement a non-partisan and methodical leadership transition. This impatience has fractured internal party morale and further eroded the party's claim to reformist ideals. Very much sought after talent One must now ask how can Reformasi be re-engineered within PKR when nepotism overshadows every leadership decision? The spirit of Reformasi has been replaced with something else entirely – perhaps more accurately described as Reformati, a parody of its original promise. Will Rafizi remain in PKR after this humiliation? It's unclear. That his public defeat has been engineered not by a better candidate but by the entrenched forces of favouritism may be too bitter to swallow. Time may heal political wounds but not when the blow was so deliberately inflicted. Yet, beyond the party's internal politics, a greater audience awaits Rafizi. His intellect, his conviction and his vision for a better Malaysia remain needed more than ever. Though temporarily sidelined, his journey is far from over.
