No need to dissolve Economy Ministry

The Sun16-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that there is no necessity to dissolve the Economy Ministry and any new ministerial appointment will only be made at an appropriate time.
Anwar explained that the Economy Ministry, which was formerly the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) under the Prime Minister's Department, was elevated to a full ministry during Pakatan Harapan's first administration.
'There is no issue of a change (in ministerial structure). The structure is determined by the Cabinet and me, so for now, I don't see any need for a reshuffle,' he told reporters after officiating at Energy Asia 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
On the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), scheduled to be tabled in Parliament this July, Anwar said it is a collective responsibility of the Cabinet, with the Economy Ministry serving as the main secretariat.
He added that various adjustments and reforms are underway in light of the changing economic landscape, including tariff revisions that are impacting key national projections.
'Last week, we also held a meeting to hear input from ministries on policy adjustments being introduced,' he said.
On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli tendered his resignation and went on leave, which ends today.
On the resignation of Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Anwar said the matter has not been finalised as he wishes to allow time and space before making a decision.
'I usually wait, give them a chance. Reflect, consider, and I will give my view. If possible, I'd like him to continue his service; there's still time before his resignation takes effect,' he said.
Nik Nazmi also tendered his resignation on May 28 and has gone on leave until July 3.
When asked about the proposed adjustments involving RON95 petrol prices, Anwar reiterated that it will not affect 85 to 90 per cent of the population.
He said the opposition's claims that people are suffering due to the subsidy rationalisation policy are nothing more than desperate political gimmicks aimed at creating a negative image of the government.
Anwar said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation is a critical step to ensure sufficient national resources are channelled effectively to benefit the lower-income group.
'We want to have enough resources to help the poor, to enhance the quality of education and to provide better public services, including in healthcare,' he said.
The Prime Minister added that the government is committed to implementing the policy despite criticisms, as it forms part of broader economic reforms aimed at long-term fiscal sustainability.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker to get Home Ministry to explain attack on Rafizi's son

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul says he will contact the Home Ministry for an explanation regarding recent news of an attack on an MP's son. The MP in question is former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli (PH-Pandan), whose 12-year-old son has reportedly been attacked and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, earlier on Wednesday (Aug 13). Johari said that while he was currently unaware of what occurred, he would do his utmost to ensure the safety of all MPs. 'I will contact the Home Ministry to get an explanation of what happened as soon as possible, especially since this may involve the safety of all of us. 'If I feel there is a need for further clarification on what occurred, I will ask for the minister to come to Parliament to explain this unprecedented incident,' he said during debates of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on Wednesday. Johari's decision comes after Wong Chen (PH-Subang) interrupted 13MP debates to inform the Dewan Rakyat of the reported attack on Rafizi's son, asking if Johari could get relevant ministries to give an explanation on the sudden news to the Dewan Rakyat during the next session on Thursday (Aug 14).

PETALING JAYA: The retail price of RON97 petrol will go down by four sen to RM3.13 per litre from Aug 14 to Aug 20. In a statement on Wednesday (Aug 13), the Finance Ministry said diesel prices will also go down by four sen throughout the country - at RM2.15 per litre in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, and RM2.90 per litre in the peninsula. The retail price of RON95 petrol remains unchanged at RM2.05 per litre. The Finance Ministry said the prices were set based on the weekly retail pricing of petroleum products, using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism formula. "The government will continue to monitor global oil price trends and take appropriate measures to safeguard the welfare and well-being of the people," the statement said.

13MP debate descends into shouting match once again over "kafir harbi" remark

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan was once again thrown into a shouting match this afternoon when an opposition member of parliament called RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) "kafir harbi" (non-believers who are against Islam). It all started when Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN-Pendang) accused the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) of failing to deliver aid. He claimed that despite RM100 million being allocated for Mitra, "not a single cent" had been released and accused some board members of doing nothing for the Indian community. Following Awang's allegations, Rayer rose and interjected, citing the standing order and accusing him of making a malicious assumption regarding Mitra's allocations. "How does he, or Batu and Segamat, together with Indian MPs and other non-Indian MPs, know that this matter has not been brought to the prime minister's attention? "How does he know the prime minister does not care about this matter? Don't make accusations or malicious assumptions. I don't want to waste time with Pendang... I am fed up with him," he said. The heated exchange between the two continued before being stopped by Syahredzan Johan, who was presiding over the session. Awang later resumed his debate and took a jab at Rayer, saying that Pas had remained calm even when the party was previously labelled "Parti Ajaran Sesat." "They even called Pas 'Parti Ajaran Sesat,' but we stayed calm. One of them is a kafir harbi who called us that. He said it just now in Parliament. But we stayed calm," he said. Tensions escalated further after Chong Zemin (PH-Kampar) interjected in defence of Rayer before being muted by Syahredzan. Syahredzan later instructed Awang to withdraw the "kafir harbi" term, which he did, and the session subsequently resumed.
