Egypt unveils Gaza reconstruction plan, calls for international funding conference

Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, hosted a key meeting on Monday with foreign ambassadors and representatives from international organizations to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza's health sector. The session, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, included over 100 diplomats and international officials, with Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar also in attendance.
During the meeting, a detailed visual presentation of Egypt's Gaza Reconstruction Plan was shared. The plan, developed in collaboration with the Palestinian government, focuses on rebuilding Gaza's critical infrastructure, particularly within the health sector, which has been severely impacted by ongoing conflict.
Abdelatty stressed that the success of the plan hinges on maintaining a lasting ceasefire and effectively managing the early recovery phase, while ensuring the Palestinian Authority plays a central role in overseeing the reconstruction efforts. He further highlighted that Egypt and Jordan have begun training Palestinian police forces in anticipation of their deployment within Gaza.
The Egyptian Minister underscored that the reconstruction initiative has garnered widespread regional and international backing. To facilitate its implementation, Egypt is planning to organize an international conference aimed at securing the necessary funding.
Abdelatty also proposed that the UN Security Council consider establishing an international presence in Palestinian territories, potentially deploying peacekeeping forces or providing international protection. This would be part of a broader plan to support the eventual creation of an independent Palestinian state.
In his presentation, Abdel Ghaffar outlined the dire health situation in Gaza, revealing that more than 70% of healthcare facilities are currently non-functional. He reported that Egypt has provided medical assistance to over 107,000 Palestinians since the onset of the conflict, amounting to a cost exceeding $570 million. Abdel Ghaffar also introduced Egypt's plan to rebuild Gaza's health infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of enhancing medical services and supplying essential health materials.
