Nation's No. 2 RB for 2026 Commits to SEC Powerhouse originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Texas Longhorns landed a significant member to its 2026 recruiting class on Sunday.
Five-star running back/athlete Derrek Cooper announced his commitment to Texas via social media. The Chaminade-Madonna product (Hollywood, FL) chose the Longhorns over Ohio State, Georgia, Miami, and Florida State.
Cooper is ranked the No. 2 athlete in the nation and No. 2 overall prospect in Florida for the 2026 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. He becomes the fifth-highest ranked player in Texas' class and the No. 2 offensive recruit behind only five-star quarterback Dia Bell.
The Longhorns now hold verbal commitments from 21 players for the 2026 cycle. Cooper's addition bumped Texas' class to No. 5 overall in the country per 247Sports.
Aside from Bell, the group is headlined by several key defensive recruits in five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson, five-star cornerback/athlete Jermaine Bishop, four-star edge Richard Wesley, and four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian landed the No. 1 overall recruiting class in 2025 and is on pace to land a top-five class for this cycle. The last time Texas did not land a top-five class was in 2021, the year Sarkisian was hired.
Player development under Sarkisian's staff is at an all-time high and seems to be a primary reason recruits are flocking to Austin. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Florida football coach Billy Napier says safety Asa Turner no longer with the team

Former Florida football safety Asa Turner was granted a seventh year of eligibility by the NCAA. But Florida Gators coach Billy Napier said during his media day press conference on July 29 that Turner won't be playing football for UF this season. "Asa is transitioning out of football," Napier said. "He's had really three years of significant injuries in college football. I actually met with Asa this morning. Look, Asa did a great job when he got here and was a really big contributor early in the season. Got injured and then hasn't quite been the same guy, if you really look at Washington the last couple of years." A transfer from Washington, Turner appeared in just one game for Florida last season, making a tackle against Miami before being sidelined for the rest of the 2024 season with a knee injury. "Asa contributed to our team last year," Napier said. "Very thankful for the way he approached being a teammate, his attitude. But he's at a point where he's not going to play." Florida has developed depth at safety with Bryce Thornton and Jordan Castell emerging as the two starters for UF. Freshman Drake Stubbs also showed promise at safety during UF's spring game, recording an interception. Kevin Brockway is The Gainesville Sun's Florida beat writer. LSU football linebacker Whit Weeks named to Bronco Nagurski award watchlist

LSU football linebacker Whit Weeks was named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, announced Tuesday. The annual award is presented to the top defensive player in college football. LSU has just one Nagurski award winner in its history -- defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. He won the trophy in 2007 after totaling 69 tackles and seven sacks. South Carolina's Kyle Kennard earned the recognition last year. A rising junior, Weeks ranked second in the SEC last year with 56 stops and 25 pressures. He led the Tigers with 125 tackles while also adding 10 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Weeks took a big step forward as a sophomore under first-year defensive coordinator Blake Baker, ranking among the top five in multiple statistical categories within the conference. Similar progression in 2025 would further increase his NFL Draft stock and put LSU's defense in a position to contain some of the nation's most potent offenses.
