Falcons vs. Lions live updates: NFL preseason game score, highlights
The Atlanta Falcons are making their 2025 preseason debut against the Detroit Lions tonight at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While we don't expect to see many starters on either side, the Falcons are playing their five-player rookie draft class, including first-round picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr.
Atlanta ruled out Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins earlier this week, so it will be Easton Stick and Emory Jones splitting the reps at quarterback. The Falcons have a few position battles worth keeping an eye on, including one between kickers Younghoe Koo and Lenny Krieg.
The Falcons Wire is bringing you live updates, scores and highlights from the game. Follow along.

Falcons WR Chris Blair makes 3 straight grabs, scores TD
Blair hauled in a 29-yard reception and came back even stronger on the next two plays. Easton Stick hit Blair on a 13-yard touchdown to give the Falcons a 10-7 lead before halftime.
Lions finally get on the board, Isaac TeSlaa scores TD
Lions finally score late in the second quarter when Kyle Allen connected with third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa for the touchdown. Lions lead 7-3.
2nd Quarter: Falcons force 2nd fumble
While the offense may be struggling, the Falcons forced their second fumble of the game in the second quarter. Defensive lineman Ta'Quon Graham recovered the fumble to give Atlanta the ball with 10 minutes left in the half.
Falcons LB Josh Woods making plays
Woods leads the team with four tackles, including one TFL, and forced a fumble on the Lions' opening drive. The veteran linebacker is making a strong case to make the 53-man roster.
Falcons rookies Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr. enter game on 2nd drive
Both of the Falcons first-round picks entered the game midway through the first quarter. Right away, the team got good pressure on Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker. The Falcons let the Lions off the hook though as Hooker escaped the pocket and rushed for a first down two plays later. DeMarcco Hellams flagged for targeting (controversial call).
Falcons' 2nd drive: Lenny Krieg hits 57-yard field goal
The Falcons completed back-to-back passes to wide receiver Dylan Drummond before kicker Lenny Krieg came on for a 57-yard field goal. Atlanta takes a 3-0 lead with 8:32 left in the first quarter.
Lions take over, give ball right back to Falcons
The Falcons defensive line was more than the Lions could handle on Detroit's first drive. Quarterback Hendon Hooker attempted to evade a collapsing pocket and ended up fumbling the ball right back to Atlanta. Nickel back Dee Alford recovered the fumble. The Falcons took over around midfield.
1st quarter: Falcons receive ball first, Stick in at QB
The Falcons received the ball first. Easton Stick is starting at quarterback with Elijah Dotson starting at running back. Stick avoided a sack and made a nice throw to wide receiver David Sills for a 15-yard gain and first down. Stick missed Sills on third down and the Falcons were forced to punt.

Waldrep strikes out 7 as Braves beat White Sox 1-0
ATLANTA -- Hurston Waldrep struck out a career best-tying seven in seven innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday night. Marcell Ozuna scored from third base in the fourth inning on an infield error as Atlanta took the rubber game of the three-game series. Raisel Igelesias pitched the ninth for his 21st save. Chicago has now lost six of its last seven games and 13 of its last 16. Waldrep (4-0) in the fifth start of his career allowed just four hits and walked one. White Sox starter Martin Perez (1-3) pitched a strong 5 1/3 innings, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out five. Atlanta's Michael Harris II had his 12-game hitting streak come to a close after an 0 for 3 night at the plate. The Braves picked up their 10th win in their last 12 games while taking their fourth straight series victory. Even so, Atlanta finds itself 16 games back in the NL East standings. Iglesias threw his 12th straight closing inning without allowing a run. Waldrep has 24 strikeouts in just 24 2/3 innings pitched this season. Both teams get a day off before opening a new series. LHP Joey Wentz (4-3, 4.72 ERA) is expected to take the mound for Atlanta against the Mets, while RHP Aaron Civale (3-8, 4.88) gets the start for Chicago against the Twins. ___

Michael Penix Jr. Earns Epic Comparison That Will Fire Up Falcons Fans
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When the Atlanta Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, just about everyone wondered what they were doing. That especially included Kirk Cousins, who had just signed a four-year, $180 million contract in free agency. But when Cousins was benched late last season as a result of a horrific stretch of play, the Falcons' decision to take Penix became much more clear. Their choice to sign Cousins, however, ended up being much more head-scratching. More news: Detroit Lions QB Could be NFL's Most Compelling Trade Candidate Regardless, Penix is clearly Atlanta's quarterback heading into 2025, and while he only threw three touchdowns to go along with three interceptions in five appearances and three starts during his rookie campaign, there is plenty of reason to be excited about the 25-year-old. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently outlined why there should be considerable hype surrounding Penix going into his second season and unveiled a rather tremendous comparison for him in the process: Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford. Michael Penix Jr. #9 of the Atlanta Falcons celebrates after throwing a touchdown pass to Drake London #5 during the second quarter against the Carolina Panthers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 05, 2025 in Atlanta,... Michael Penix Jr. #9 of the Atlanta Falcons celebrates after throwing a touchdown pass to Drake London #5 during the second quarter against the Carolina Panthers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 05, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More"You can see why Raheem Morris's Rams-centric staff got Matthew Stafford vibes studying and working out the ex-Washington quarterback before the draft, and why those have only gotten stronger since," Breer wrote. "He may not have all the arm angles or game-tested savvy that Stafford has yet, but there's plenty of reason to be excited about where he's headed." More news: Denver Broncos Could Acquire Deion Sanders' Son Penix put together two terrific seasons at Washington in 2022 and 2023 after transferring over from Indiana, leading the Huskies all the way to the National Championship Game during his final collegiate campaign. That season, Penix led the country with 4,903 passing yards and tossed 36 touchdowns and 11 picks. Armed with an overlooked receiving corps led by Drake London and Darnell Mooney as well as one of the league's best running backs in Bijan Robinson, Penix will have plenty of weapons at his disposal this coming season. Whether or not he will be able to take advantage of his arsenal remains to be seen. For more on the Falcons and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
