Deco talks to Xavi Simons' entourage in Barcelona hotel
Simons's contract with RB Leipzig runs until June 30, 2027, but he's reportedly keen to leave Germany. He's already informed Die Roten Bullen of his intention to leave on several occasions. The player, adept in midfield and further forward, would ideally like to return to Barcelona, where he played as a youth player between 2010 and 2019.
To fulfil Simons' wish, his entourage decided to schedule a meeting with Deco. The meeting took place on Thursday afternoon at a Barcelona hotel. According to Sport, the meeting lasted 45 minutes. While Barcelona are interested in the idea of Simons' return, a deal with Leipzig is 'currently almost unthinkable'.
Barcelona still face financial difficulties and therefore seem unable to afford the €70 million Simons is expected to cost. 'His current price tag is completely unaffordable,' Sport even states.
Simons himself also seems aware that it's currently difficult, if not impossible, to move to Barcelona. The former PSV player was also recently linked with Bayern Munich, but that interest doesn't seem concrete at the moment either.

Raiders place DT Christian Wilkins on PUP list as he still recovers from broken foot
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders placed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who experienced a significant setback earlier this year in his recovery from a broken foot, on the physically unable to perform list Friday. That means Wilkins will miss at least the beginning of training camp, which opens Wednesday. Because he was placed on the PUP list before practices began, the Raiders can activate Wilkins at any time during camp once medically cleared. Wilkins suffered the season-ending injury in Week 5 last season. He then experienced some sort of setback in his recovery, which caused him to miss all of organized team activities and minicamp. 'It's been a difficult recovery and he's done everything he needs to do,' coach Pete Carroll said in May. 'He's been here every day. He's here early working hard. He's not ready to get back out. We're in the midst of a long, challenging process.' Wilkins, 29, was the Raiders' marquee free-agent signing last year, agreeing to a four-year, $110 million contract with $82.75 million guaranteed. He was expected to bolster a defensive line led by pass rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce after making a career-high nine sacks in 2023 with Miami to go with his elite run-stopping ability. All three linemen, however, suffered season-ending injuries. Wilkins had two sacks and 17 tackles in five games before injuring his foot, which required surgery. Newcastle sign former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion
Newcastle United Women have completed the signing of former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion. Mannion, 29, left Manchester United at the end of her contract on June 30 following four years with last season's FA Cup finalists. She follows Jordan Nobbs in dropping down from the Women's Super League to join second tier Newcastle this summer, after the WSL record appearance holder's move to the club was confirmed on Tuesday. 'It feels so good to be part of the club,' Mannion said in an official Newcastle statement. 'It is clear to everybody the direction this club is going in, it's really exciting to be a part of.' The Republic of Ireland international made 55 appearances for United in all competitions after her transfer from Manchester City in 2021. She came on as a substitute in the 2024 FA Cup final to win her and the club's first major trophy, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0. Mannion was sidelined for 11 months while at Manchester United after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in February 2022 — the second of her career. She represented England at youth level and received call ups to the senior side without making her full debut, before switching her international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland and making her debut in 2023. She has appeared 16 times for the national side. Newcastle finished fifth in the WSL 2, formerly the Championship, last season, their first campaign in the second tier. Australia hands over first tranche of tanks to Ukraine
The first tranche of Australian tanks has been handed over to the Ukrainian army to help its defence against Russia's invasion. Australia pledged to give Ukraine 49 Abrams tanks at a value of $245 million. Defence Minister Richard Marles said the tanks would aid Ukrainian firepower and complement other military equipment donated by allies to repel Russia's invasion. "Australia remains steadfast in our support for Ukraine and seeing a just and lasting peace," Mr Marles said. A majority of the tanks have been delivered and a final tranche will arrive in the coming months, but actual numbers haven't been released. Russian missile and drone strikes in Ukraine are targeting civilians in record numbers, according to the United Nations human rights office. At least 139 civilians have been killed and more than 790 injured as of July 15. June marked the deadliest month for civilians in more than three years, the UN said. Australia will also deploy a Wedgetail aircraft to Europe in August to protect the corridors to Ukraine through which aid is delivered. "Australia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine," Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said. Australia has committed more than $1.5 billion to aid Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022. It comes as the federal government negotiates a non-binding security pact with Ukraine, following more than two dozen other nations that have similar agreements. The agreements are largely vague, aren't legally binding and don't include joint security or defence guarantees.
