Mexico overcomes slow start to beat Dominican Republic 3-2 in Gold Cup group stage
Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage match.
West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raul Jimenez added a goal in the 47th and defender Cesar Montes got another one in the 53rd.
Jiménez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six away from Jared Borgetti, in second place on the career scoring list for El Tri. Javier Hernandez is Mexico's to scorer with 52.
Mexico leads Group A with three points while the Dominican Republic is at the bottom. Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in the group, will face off on Sunday in Snapdragon stadium in San Diego.
Peter Gonzalez in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the CONCACAF Nations League.
The match was played at SoFi stadium before 54,309 fans, most of them rooting for Mexico.
There was uncertainty on how many Mexican fans would attend the match. On Friday, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum urged U.S. officials not to target individuals attending the game.
Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA's fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained.
Mexico will try to qualify for the next round next Wednesday when they play Suriname while the Dominican Republic will play Costa Rica. Both matches will be played at the AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Why Christian Pulisic and other USMNT stars aren't playing in Gold Cup The U.S. men's national team enters the CONCACAF Gold Cup coming off a four-game losing streak under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. And if the USMNT is going to right the ship this tournament, it's going to do so without its best players. In recent years, the Gold Cup has been relegated to a developmental tournament with U.S. Soccer opting to instead send its best team to the CONCACAF Nations League or last year's Copa America. But this summer's Gold Cup could have been different with it being the final competitive tournament for the USMNT before next year's World Cup. Yet, when the rosters were announced, star players like Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Weston McKennie were not included ... for different reasons. Pulisic's absence was especially controversial among the USMNT fan base as the 26-year-old was coming off his best season at AC Milan. Pulisic, though, asked to not be a part of the Gold Cup roster in order to give himself an offseason to recover. Pulisic told CBS Sports that he was willing to play in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, but Pochettino declined that request. The USMNT coach wanted to use the same roster for both the friendlies and Gold Cup, so Pulisic opted to stay home. Musah and Robinson had similar reasons to Pulisic. They wanted to use the summer as an opportunity to recover ahead of the club season and World Cup. When it comes to McKennie, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah, they were not available as their club teams are competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. USMNT starters Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest were included on the initial camp roster but withdrew ahead of the friendlies. Both players were coming off lengthy injuries and were still working back to full strength.

Several injured after vehicle drives into crowd leaving soccer match: California officials
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) — A vehicle allegedly plowed into a crowd near SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, on Saturday night, injuring at least six pedestrians, according to officials. Six people were found with minor injuries and taken to area hospitals, the Los Angeles County Fire Department told Nexstar's KTLA. The incident happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. In an update provided around midnight, L.A. County Fire said the total number of patients was six. However, the Inglewood Police Department said it is still working to confirm the total number of people injured. KTLA's Rich Prickett reported that witnesses said one of the individuals injured may have been a 14-year-old boy, but authorities have not confirmed the ages of the victims. In addition, footage from Sky5 showed a large paramedic and law enforcement response at the scene, with multiple firetrucks blocking off traffic as investigators responded to the area. L.A. County Fire said it is unclear how the crash occurred, and could not immediately provide details on the driver or vehicle involved. However, footage from showed a sedan with severe front-end damage, and investigators setting up a perimeter and a canvas next to the debris from the crash. Mayor James Butts, Jr., told local reporters that the driver allegedly told authorities thaty he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. He was also taken to the hospital. The crash, which officials declared a mass casualty incident, took place just as fans were leaving the CONCACAF Gold Cup match between Mexico and the Dominican Republic at SoFi. The match at SoFi Stadium drew 54,309, the Associated Press reported.
