Fox tests positive for rabies in Wimberley community, HCSO says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A fox tested positive for rabies in Wimberley on Friday, according to the Hays County Sheriff's Office. HCSO said in a social media post that a fox 'was found exhibiting abnormal behavior' in the Palo Pinto Path in Wimberley, which is near Cypress Creek. The agency said the fox was tested by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and that was when the test confirmed to be positive for the virus. 'We are asking all people to please be careful. If you come in contact with a fox please do not touch it. There has been no known human contact with this fox,' HCSO said. If anyone in the community may have come into physical contact with the fox can call HCSO, Animal Control Unit at (512) 393-7896, the Hays County Health Department Epidemiology Department at (512) 393-5520 option 3, or DSHS Zoonosis Control at (254) 778-6744, the agency said. Concern over winter ice rink damaging park grass

Concerns have been raised over the environmental impact that a temporary ice rink could be having on a popular park. The winter attraction at Imperial Gardens in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, provides a huge boost to the local economy throughout the Christmas period. Speaking at a planning committee meeting, Cheltenham borough councillor Glenn Andrews raised fears that with each passing year that the rink is installed, soil compaction and sunlight deprivation are slowly killing the grass underneath. However, the committee voted to allow the installation and operation of the rink for up to 75 days a year, from November to January, for the next three years. During the meeting on 22 May, Andrews said he was worried that after another three winters, the council may have to completely redo the gardens. "Every time I go into Imperial Gardens... the re-turfing isn't taking as well. That is fairly obvious," he said. "I do worry about soil compaction. We've got three whole years, and winter is the time when traditionally those gardens would regenerate. "I think on ecological grounds I'm against this." According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, head of planning Chris Gomm said he was not aware that soil compaction was an issue assessed by the case officer. "The condition that requires the land to be reinstated to its former condition would also apply to the flowerbeds and the grass, to make sure they are healthy post deconstruction," he said. Councillor Frank Allen added the economic benefit it brings to the town outweighed any potential ecological issues. "The ice rink is one of our best features in the winter. We would do well to keep on preserving that," he said. Follow BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, X and Instagram. Send your story ideas to us on email or via WhatsApp on 0800 313 4630. Andrews campaign says it raised more than $300K in first 24 hours after launching U.S. Senate bid

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews raised more than $300,000 in the first 24 hours after announcing her bid to unseat Republican Lindsey Graham in the U.S. Senate, her campaign said Friday. Andrews officially launched her campaign on May 29 with a three-and-a-half-minute video in which she called Graham's shifting attitude toward President Donald Trump 'embarrassing' and leaned on her background as a pediatrician to demonstrate her disapproval of the current administration's healthcare policy. That video, which has since amassed more than one million views on X (formerly Twitter), helped fuel donations from 8,750 individual donors across all 50 states, according to the campaign. In a May 30 statement to News 2, Andrews said she was 'beyond grateful' for the contributions. 'Whether it was five dollars or fifty, you're helping build something big — and we're doing it without a single dime from corporate PACs,' she said. 'We're building a grassroots coalition that's ready to fight the corruption and BS in Washington, protect and expand healthcare, lower costs, and build a future where every child in South Carolina has a shot to thrive.' Andrews is expected to run on a similar platform to that of her 2022 U.S. House campaign, saying issues like healthcare costs, gun violence, and the economy have 'only grown bigger' since then. But her path to Capitol Hill won't be easy in a state where no Democrat has won a statewide race in decades, and the fight to convince voters that Graham doesn't deserve a fifth term in Washington is likely to be an expensive one. Graham's most recent reelection fight in 2020 saw him and his Democratic opponent, Jaime Harrison, post record-breaking fundraising totals of more than $100 million each. As for this election cycle, a first-quarter filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) showed Graham had a $15.9 million campaign war chest to pull from. That's the third-highest total of any Senate candidate running in 2026, behind only Georgia Democrat John Ossoff and New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker. But before she can get to Graham, Andrews will have to defeat what could be a crowded Democratic primary field next June. Two other people — Lee Johnson and Kyle Freeman — have filed paperwork with the FEC to run for the Democratic nomination in 2026, and a third person — former U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Fleming-Bruce — has also said she plans to enter the race. FEC filings show Freeman, a logistics professional from Columbia, had about $32,000 in his campaign account as of March 31. Johnson, an engineer from Greenville, has not yet posted first-quarter fundraising numbers. Graham has already drawn at least one challenger in the Republican primary: Upstate businessman Mark Lynch.
