MANILA: Twelve people died in a multi-vehicle collision at the northbound lane of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac expressway (SCTEX) at past noon on Labour Day (May 1), said Police Regional Office 3 (PRO Central Luzon).
Central Luzon police chief Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo told INQUIRER.net that apart from the 12 people who were killed, 27 others were injured in the tragedy.
According to an initial report from the Central Luzon Police Regional Office (PRO 3), the mishap occurred at around 12.30 noon at the Tarlac SCTEX Exit Toll Plaza in Tarlac City.
The PRC said three SUVs were involved in the accident, along with one container truck, as well as a passenger bus.
Initial investigation showed that the collision occurred after a passenger bus accidentally hit an SUV, which was at full stop, along with other vehicles at the Lane 2 (northbound) of the SCTEX toll plaza.
The strong impact resulted in a ripple effect, with the SUV also crashing into the other vehicles in front of it.
'Investigation is still going on,' PRO 3 said in its report. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Ten killed as bus rams vehicles at Philippine toll gate

Police told AFP the driver of the bus admitted falling asleep at the wheel before the crash near Luzon island's Tarlac City. -- PHOTOS: PHILIPPINE RED CROSS/FACEBOOK MANILA (AFP): Ten people were killed and another 37 injured when a bus ploughed into vehicles waiting at a toll gate in the northern Philippines on Thursday, police said. The bus set off a chain reaction involving multiple stopped vehicles after first slamming into a sports utility vehicle, authorities said. Police told AFP the driver of the bus had admitted falling asleep at the wheel before the crash near Luzon island's Tarlac City. "Per the initial interview by our investigators ... the driver said he fell asleep and was woken up to the scene of crashed vehicles," said Colonel Romel Santos of the Tarlac City police. Four minors were among those killed in the accident, he said. The crash happened as freeways were filled with families heading to and from Labour Day holidays. Both the driver and conductor had been taken into custody, Santos said, with the former facing a potential charge of "reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides". Investigators were still waiting at a local hospital for relatives to identify the victims taken there, he said. The extent of injuries suffered by survivors was not yet known. Deadly road accidents are common in the Philippines, where drivers frequently flout the rules and vehicles are often poorly maintained or overloaded. - AFP
