Five Scottish swimming pools and lidos to head to this weekend as weather heats up

Daily Record12-07-2025
We have rounded up some of the best spots in Scotland for an outdoor swim.
This weekend is set to bring sizzling temperatures across Scotland. With highs of 30 degrees Celsius predicted in parts of the country, it might be a record-breaking few days of weather.
There comes a point when the heat can get too much and start to become uncomfortable. If there was ever a weekend to go for a swim, this is it.

All over the country, there are indoor pools where Scots can head to cool down. There is also no shortage of picturesque beaches where you can dip your toes in the water.

However, if you are after something a bit different, Scotland is also home to a number of lidos and outdoor swimming pools. These are perfect if you still want to make the most of the good weather while also taking advantage of the fun that swimming pools bring.
To help keep cool, The Daily Record has rounded up five of these outdoor swimming spots around Scotland. From Fife to Wick, you won't be too far from at least one of them.
Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Stonehaven
The Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is one of the most popular and renowned outdoor swimming pools in Scotland, and for good reason. Situated in the coastal Aberdeenshire town of Stonehaven, the attraction is the only art deco Olympic-sized seawater lido in the UK.
The pool, which will remain open for the summer until early September, is heated and offers everything from fun sessions with inflatables for families to quiet swims. It even hosts special midnight sessions for those wanting a dip in the water under the stars.

More information can be found on the Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool website.
The Trinkie, Wick
The Trinkie is a natural sea water pool located in Wick that is especially popular amongst swimmers and picnickers when the mercury rises. Its name comes from the Scots word for 'trench', with the pool being created from part of a quarry.
Nested along Scotland's jaw-dropping northern coastline, the waters of The Trinkie are filled from the North Sea. If you are after a more rugged swim that brings you closer to nature, this might be the spot for you.

Gourock Outdoor Pool, Gourock
Now open for the summer season, the Gourock Outdoor Pool is a heated saltwater pool situated in the Inverclyde town of Gourock. Part of Inverclyde Leisure, the pool offers incredible views out over the Clyde Estuary to enjoy as you swim.

The pool, which has been refurbished with modern changing facilities, includes a diving board—while there is also a separate kiddies' pool. Like Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Gourock Outdoor Pool also offers 'Starlight Swims' where visitors can enjoy a refreshing night-time dip.
More information can be found on the Inverclyde Leisure website.
New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool, New Cumnock
New Cumnock in Ayrshire is also home to a popular outdoor swimming pool, open seven days a week through the summer season. Situated just a 10-minute walk from the New Cumnock train station, it is Scotland's only public outdoor freshwater heated swimming pool.

New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool offers lane swimming, fitness classes, and private exclusive-use bookings. The pool also features changing rooms and showers.
More information can be found on the New Cumnock Swimming Pool Facebook page.
St Monans Tidal Pool, Fife

Finally, St Monans Tidal Pool is a historic outdoor pool that has been restored by the local community. The pool sits in the shadow of an old windmill that was once used to pump seawater, and is a great place to watch the sun go down.
Unlike some other pools on this roundup, St Monans Tidal Pool is not maintained and so swimmers enter the water at their own risk. However, if you are looking to take a dip on the edge of the sea, it is hard to imagine a more picturesque spot than this.
More information can be found on the Welcome To Fife website.

Donald Trump's Air Force One makes guest appearance in couple's wedding photoshoot

The US President made an appearance in the couple's photographs as his impressive jet Air Force One flew over their heads. This is the moment Donald Trump featured in a Scots couple's pre-wedding photo shoot. ‌ The US President made an appearance in practice snaps for a bride-and-groom-to-be as his impressive jet Air Force One flew over their heads. ‌ The iconic plane carrying the world leader was coming into land at Prestwick Airport on Friday. ‌ Thousands had gathered to watch the historic moment as the president arrived for a whistle-stop five-day visit to Scotland to visit his two golf resorts. And as the mega Boeing-747 made its final approach it was captured at nearby Enterkine Country House Hotel by the couple's wedding photographer, who caught stunning images. ‌ Koren McGreever, 29, and future-husband, Aaron Davis, 32, were down on ground level posing amongst scenic fields when they heard the huge jet fly over. They quickly rushed to get a perfect spot with wedding snapper Gavin Macqueen snapping the world's most famous aircraft above them. ‌ Koren, who lives with Aaron in Stirling, told the Record: 'We're not getting married until next July but we wanted to do a practice shoot this summer to try and replicate the same lighting and background. 'We never expected that background to include the President of the United States. 'We never actually realised he was arriving that day until we heard this loud plane over our heads. I looked up and it was the biggest jet I've ever seen. ‌ 'We only had a few seconds to get a shot with it in, the photographer was scrambling about trying to get it. 'We ran to another spot in the middle of a barely field and Gavin managed to get this incredible pic with Air Force One up above us. ‌ 'The end result is amazing, it is definitely getting framed.' The couple say they have had a great response to the pictures which was shared on social media by Gavin. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! 'Another friend shared a picture of us and put the caption 'Love Trumps All', which we absolutely loved.' ‌ Glasgow photographer Gavin Macqueen admitted the appearance of President Trump's plane caught him by surprise. He said: 'I drove round from Prestwick to Enterkine House and the airport perimeters were mobbed with people and the police. 'I had a feeling I was going to see Air Force One but I hadn't anticipated that it would be during the shoot. I thought it would be on the drive back to Prestwick where I was staying for the night. It was surreal how it happened. ‌ 'We heard the low drone of the plane before we saw it. We were right on the flight path. And then I got the pictures. It all happened so fast - instinct took over.' Trump touched down last Friday at the Ayrshire travel hub before heading along to his golf resort in Turnberry where he spent a few days. He then travelled to his Meine Estate golf course in Aberdeenshire where he had dinner with First Minister John Swinney and held crunch talks with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Trump's presence in Scotland was met with protests in both Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire.

Donald Trump calls Scotland a nation of 'great fighters'

His mother, Mary MacLeod, was from Tong on the Isle of Lewis and Mr Trump has said he feels a deep connection to the country. In a new podcast interview he praised the Scots as "great fighters", admitted he has never had black pudding, and opined that there are no subways in Scotland. Read More: President Trump was asked on Pod Force One if he felt Scottish, replying: "Well, I've been here and we have incredible investments in Aberdeen. "Aberdeen is actually the oil capital of Europe, they should really let that go to town instead of doing all this other nonsense because they have tremendous oil reserves in Aberdeen. "Turnberry is long-term, it's just this incredible place. In Aberdeen I built something that's really special, the most beautiful land you've ever seen. "My mother was born in Scotland, she loved Scotland. She was a big fan of the Queen, I have to tell you. Any time the Queen was on television my mother liked watching, she said 'oh the Queen is on'. So, you know, she was a fan. A lot of people are, and a lot of people probably aren't in terms of the monarchy but a lot of people are." Mr Trump's mother was from Lewis in the Hebrides, and he was asked about the famous black pudding from Stornoway. The President has visited his mother's birth place only once in his adult life, spending around an hour there. He replied: "I heard about it, I don't know about black pudding but it's one of the most beautiful landscapes you've ever seen, it's seriously Scottish. "The Isle of Lewis, I looked at a map, it's interesting, to get there it's... it's just... it's in a remote section. "When she came to New York she was a young girl of about 18 years old and she hadn't seen the world, she met my father and he was, you know, a successful guy. He was a young guy but he was a successful guy, he was building houses and she really was beautiful, she really was beautiful, she was a beautiful woman. "He (Fred Trump) came home that night and said to my grandmother, who was a fantastic person, my father's mother, 'I just met my wife'. He was about 32, so he was a little older, she said 'you know, when are you going to get married?'. "But he was a great guy, but he immediately knew. "The Scottish people are really amazing and they're great fighters too, that's why England sort of never... Braveheart, one of the great movies of all time, England had a hard time with Scotland they just couldn't quite tame them. "They're great people, no crime, you don't have crime, you don't have muggings, you don't have people getting hit over the head when they're not looking with a baseball bat. They're not pushed into a subway if they had them, which they don't. You wouldn't have them pushed into a subway." Glasgow is the only city in Scotland which has a subway system.
