INVERCLYDE'S annual triathlon race will return to Gourock next month with experienced athletes and beginners encouraged to take part. On Sunday, August 17, swimmers, runners and cyclists will be lacing up their trainers and looking out their goggles as they gear up to compete in Inverclyde Leisure's popular event. To ensure the event is as inclusive as possible Inverclyde Leisure organisers said people of all fitness levels are welcome to take part, and every year lots of entrants do their first-ever triathlon Inverclyde. The only thing requirement that organisers ask is that competitors can complete the swim in under 45 minutes. Head of Inverclyde Leisure, David McCorkindale has been taking part in the triathlon since it began in 2007 and says he has never missed a year of the race. He said: 'It's a fantastic even and I would encourage anybody of any level to try it out this year just for the taking part and then build on their time for next year. "You can also take part as a team so get you friends or work colleagues together so you can build it up to doing it all yourself. "It can be a challenge, but it is also very rewarding when you cross the finish line." Other News Seafield House residents put their cowboy hats on for a summer rodeo party Calls for a new Port Glasgow health centre as building is 'past its due date' Take a look inside the Port Glasgow apiary home to half a million bees To take part in the event as a team, there only needs to be three members: one runner, one cyclist, and a swimmer. David says the Inverclyde Leisure team has done an 'incredible job' in getting the course ready and making sure every competitor has a safe and fun race. Even if you aren't taking part in the race, spectators are welcome to cheer on the athletes as they race along Gourock. Entry for individuals to the adult sprint distance triathlon is £44.60 for Inverclyde Leisure members, or £55.10 for non-members with a team entry costing £60 total for three people. Five Scottish swimming pools and lidos to head to this weekend as weather heats up
We have rounded up some of the best spots in Scotland for an outdoor swim. This weekend is set to bring sizzling temperatures across Scotland. With highs of 30 degrees Celsius predicted in parts of the country, it might be a record-breaking few days of weather. There comes a point when the heat can get too much and start to become uncomfortable. If there was ever a weekend to go for a swim, this is it. All over the country, there are indoor pools where Scots can head to cool down. There is also no shortage of picturesque beaches where you can dip your toes in the water. However, if you are after something a bit different, Scotland is also home to a number of lidos and outdoor swimming pools. These are perfect if you still want to make the most of the good weather while also taking advantage of the fun that swimming pools bring. To help keep cool, The Daily Record has rounded up five of these outdoor swimming spots around Scotland. From Fife to Wick, you won't be too far from at least one of them. Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Stonehaven The Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is one of the most popular and renowned outdoor swimming pools in Scotland, and for good reason. Situated in the coastal Aberdeenshire town of Stonehaven, the attraction is the only art deco Olympic-sized seawater lido in the UK. The pool, which will remain open for the summer until early September, is heated and offers everything from fun sessions with inflatables for families to quiet swims. It even hosts special midnight sessions for those wanting a dip in the water under the stars. More information can be found on the Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool website. The Trinkie, Wick The Trinkie is a natural sea water pool located in Wick that is especially popular amongst swimmers and picnickers when the mercury rises. Its name comes from the Scots word for 'trench', with the pool being created from part of a quarry. Nested along Scotland's jaw-dropping northern coastline, the waters of The Trinkie are filled from the North Sea. If you are after a more rugged swim that brings you closer to nature, this might be the spot for you. Gourock Outdoor Pool, Gourock Now open for the summer season, the Gourock Outdoor Pool is a heated saltwater pool situated in the Inverclyde town of Gourock. Part of Inverclyde Leisure, the pool offers incredible views out over the Clyde Estuary to enjoy as you swim. The pool, which has been refurbished with modern changing facilities, includes a diving board—while there is also a separate kiddies' pool. Like Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Gourock Outdoor Pool also offers 'Starlight Swims' where visitors can enjoy a refreshing night-time dip. More information can be found on the Inverclyde Leisure website. New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool, New Cumnock New Cumnock in Ayrshire is also home to a popular outdoor swimming pool, open seven days a week through the summer season. Situated just a 10-minute walk from the New Cumnock train station, it is Scotland's only public outdoor freshwater heated swimming pool. New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool offers lane swimming, fitness classes, and private exclusive-use bookings. The pool also features changing rooms and showers. More information can be found on the New Cumnock Swimming Pool Facebook page. St Monans Tidal Pool, Fife Finally, St Monans Tidal Pool is a historic outdoor pool that has been restored by the local community. The pool sits in the shadow of an old windmill that was once used to pump seawater, and is a great place to watch the sun go down. Unlike some other pools on this roundup, St Monans Tidal Pool is not maintained and so swimmers enter the water at their own risk. However, if you are looking to take a dip on the edge of the sea, it is hard to imagine a more picturesque spot than this. More information can be found on the Welcome To Fife website.

The Scottish heated outdoor swimming pool that is now open for summer 2025
It features "fabulous" views out over the Clyde. A popular Scottish outdoor swimming pool has opened for the summer. The heated saltwater pool is located less than 30 miles from Glasgow. Gourock Pool is situated in the town of Gourock in Inverclyde, and is part of Inverclyde Leisure. After closing for the winter, it reopened to the public for the summer on Friday, May 2. The open-air saltwater pool features 29-degree water, surrounded by a terraced area and a traditional patio. It is located right on the shoreline, benefitting from panoramic views of the Clyde Estuary. Gourock Pool has undergone improvement and refurbishment works. These include the addition of modern changing facilities, the scenic pool terrace, and improved disabled access with street-level parking. The pool itself is 33.3 metres long and 15 metres wide, with the salt water taken from the Firth of Clyde. It features both a spring board and a diving dale. During the week, Gourock Pool offers both open-water and lane swimming. There are also sessions that are open only to the pool's adult swimming club. In addition, there is a 'Kiddies Pool' specifically intended for younger swimmers. However, this only opens during "exceptionally busy periods, good weather, and popular demand". Gourock Pool also offers special 'Starlight Swims'. These are night-time swimming sessions, allowing visitors to take a dip under the stars. Gourock Pool has earned rave reviews from previous visitors. It has an overall rating of 4.5 out of five on Google based on 509 reviews. One swimmer wrote: "Fabulous views over the River Clyde. How inspiring for working out." A second Google user echoed: "Great come rain or shine since it's a heated (salt water) pool. Gorgeous views and ideal location for getting a bite to eat afterwards." Another posted: "Open air heated pool with fantastic views and deep end for 3.5m diving. Bring £1 and 20p coins for lockers and hairdryer. A cafe would be a great addition, but ice cream is available at the entrance." A popular nearby spot for food after swimming is the Continental Cafe. The bar and restaurant serves up food sourced from award-winning suppliers—with everything from fillet steak to fish and chips on offer. In addition to the Gourock Open Air Pool, Inverclyde Leisure also operates a nearby Waterfront Leisure Complex in Greenock. This indoor pool features a body flume, a tyre ride, a 'lazy river', and a wave machine. Elsewhere, Inverclyde Leisure's Port Glasgow Swimming Pool consists of a 20-metre pool and offers aqua-based exercise classes. It also has a sauna and a steam room, as well as "excellent disabled access".
