The Scottish heated outdoor swimming pool that is now open for summer 2025

Daily Record06-05-2025
It features "fabulous" views out over the Clyde.
A popular Scottish outdoor swimming pool has opened for the summer. The heated saltwater pool is located less than 30 miles from Glasgow.
Gourock Pool is situated in the town of Gourock in Inverclyde, and is part of Inverclyde Leisure. After closing for the winter, it reopened to the public for the summer on Friday, May 2.

The open-air saltwater pool features 29-degree water, surrounded by a terraced area and a traditional patio. It is located right on the shoreline, benefitting from panoramic views of the Clyde Estuary.

Gourock Pool has undergone improvement and refurbishment works. These include the addition of modern changing facilities, the scenic pool terrace, and improved disabled access with street-level parking.
The pool itself is 33.3 metres long and 15 metres wide, with the salt water taken from the Firth of Clyde. It features both a spring board and a diving dale.
During the week, Gourock Pool offers both open-water and lane swimming. There are also sessions that are open only to the pool's adult swimming club.
In addition, there is a 'Kiddies Pool' specifically intended for younger swimmers. However, this only opens during "exceptionally busy periods, good weather, and popular demand".
Gourock Pool also offers special 'Starlight Swims'. These are night-time swimming sessions, allowing visitors to take a dip under the stars.

Gourock Pool has earned rave reviews from previous visitors. It has an overall rating of 4.5 out of five on Google based on 509 reviews.
One swimmer wrote: "Fabulous views over the River Clyde. How inspiring for working out."

A second Google user echoed: "Great come rain or shine since it's a heated (salt water) pool. Gorgeous views and ideal location for getting a bite to eat afterwards."
Another posted: "Open air heated pool with fantastic views and deep end for 3.5m diving. Bring £1 and 20p coins for lockers and hairdryer. A cafe would be a great addition, but ice cream is available at the entrance."

A popular nearby spot for food after swimming is the Continental Cafe. The bar and restaurant serves up food sourced from award-winning suppliers—with everything from fillet steak to fish and chips on offer.
In addition to the Gourock Open Air Pool, Inverclyde Leisure also operates a nearby Waterfront Leisure Complex in Greenock. This indoor pool features a body flume, a tyre ride, a 'lazy river', and a wave machine.
Elsewhere, Inverclyde Leisure's Port Glasgow Swimming Pool consists of a 20-metre pool and offers aqua-based exercise classes. It also has a sauna and a steam room, as well as "excellent disabled access".

Derek McInnes hopes Tony Bloom enjoyed Hearts' win over Aberdeen

The Brighton owner was at Tynecastle for the first time after recently completing a deal to invest in the Edinburgh club, and he had his name sung by supporters lapping up his bold pre-match declarations that Hearts can win the Scottish title and break into the Champions League. After an early own goal from Dons skipper Graeme Shinnie and a 73rd-minute header from Stuart Findlay sent Hearts top of the fledgling league table, manager McInnes said of Bloom's attendance at the match: 'He'll have loved getting his name sung. I haven't spoken to him yet, I'm meeting him tomorrow. 'We've had a couple of text conversations. I think he would have been encouraged as well, seeing Tynecastle the way it was. I think he would have enjoyed it. He certainly would have enjoyed the result because, as he's said, he just wants to see a winning Hearts team more often than not. That's what we're all wanting.' McInnes smiled wryly when asked about Bloom's bullish comments in the 24 hours leading up to the match, but he said: 'I knew what Tony was going to say, I heard what you guys heard, absolutely no problem with it at all. 'There's so many people, including Tony, who are ambitious and want Hearts to be successful at the club. He's obviously come in with a fresh pair of eyes and came out and shot for exactly what he wants. 'We're trying to make progress and I think we can make progress. Where Tony and others and myself think we can bridge the gap and maybe try and get ahead of others is the confidence they have in the recruitment.' McInnes felt he had 'a team screaming to win the game of football there, absolutely busting'. 'For sheer commitment, guts, effort, I thought we were 10 out of 10,' he said. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin conceded the better team won. 'We had an idea of how we were going to take on the game today in the first half with the ball, and we didn't succeed in that,' he said. 'Hearts put good pressure on us, and then they win these second balls and create a momentum with the crosses. They were better in the first half. 'I think in the second half we got better with the ball and started creating some chances in their box, but we were not really clinical. We were not really there.'
