Turning the Red Planet green? It's time to take terraforming Mars seriously, scientists say

The concept of terraforming Mars — transforming the planet's climate to support life as we know it — has long belonged to the realm of science fiction. But a new study argues that it's time to take the idea seriously.
"Thirty years ago, terraforming Mars wasn't just hard — it was impossible," said Erika DeBenedictis, CEO of Pioneer Labs and lead author of the new paper. "But new technology like [SpaceX's] Starship and synthetic biology have now made it a real possibility."
The paper debates the complex ethical questions that must be considered if we're to terraform Mars and lays the blueprint for a potential path forward.
"Advocates argue that more life is better than less, and terraforming Mars could mark humanity's first act of planetary stewardship with a net positive environmental impact," said DeBenedictis.
Put succinctly, "living planets are better than dead ones," said study co-author Edwin Kite, an associate professor at the University of Chicago. "We now know that Mars was habitable in the past, from data returned by the Mars rovers, so greening Mars could be viewed as the ultimate environmental restoration challenge."
Though full terraforming may take centuries, if not millennia, the long-term goal would be a Mars with stable liquid water, breathable oxygen and a thriving ecosystem. In the short term, this might mean only small patches of microbial life; in the distant future, there could perhaps be human cities on the planet.
And if we reach the scale of cities, perhaps that's a stepping stone to even more significant exploration for our species. "As we move out into the galaxy, we will need base camps, and a base camp on the scale of the galaxy is a habitable planet," said Kite.
For co-author Robin Wordsworth, a professor of environmental and planetary science at Harvard, the argument for terraforming Mars goes beyond human colonization to the propagation of life in general.
"I see humanity as part of the biosphere, not separate from it," he said. "Life is precious — we know of nowhere else in the universe where it exists — and we have a duty to conserve it on Earth, but also to consider how we could begin to propagate it to other worlds."
It's not all about looking beyond the bounds of Earth; terraforming Mars could also help us solve climate and sustainability challenges at home, advocates say.
Nina Lanza, a planetary scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and a co-author on the paper, sees Mars as a prime testbed for planetary engineering.
"If we want to learn how to modify our environment here on Earth, to keep it in a configuration that suits us and other life forms, maybe it would be better to experiment on Mars and say, 'Look, does this work?'" she said. "I personally would like to be a little more conservative with our home planet. This is the only place we can live."
There are technological lessons to be learned, too.
"Concretely, developing and adopting green technology on Earth often falters because it must compete with dirtier alternatives that benefit from decades of infrastructure investment and entrenched interests," said DeBenedictis. "Mars is a unique target market because it has no oil, no existing infrastructure and no status quo. For this reason, developing green technologies for space is a powerful strategy for maturing it for use on Earth."
But we should take a few lessons from "Jurassic Park" when thinking about terraforming, some scientists say: Before asking, "Could we?" we need to ask, "Should we?"
"If we decide to terraform Mars, then we will really change it in ways that may or may not be reversible," said Lanza. "Mars is its own planet and has its own history. When we terraform, then we effectively don't have the opportunity to study that anymore, and we may lose knowledge about how planets form and evolve."
Most dramatically, we may destroy potential evidence of ancient Martian life, if such evidence exists.
"If we modify the environment on Mars, we're going to change the chemistry of the surface and of the subsurface, eventually," said Lanza, pointing out that such actions might erase any traces of life on Mars. "I can't say for certain. It's very complicated, but it's a risk."
Terraforming Mars would require massive changes, namely the warming of the planet to support both oxygen-producing microbes and liquid water. While all the technologies to terraform Mars are not yet available, the authors of the paper propose three phases of development.
First, scientists would use abiotic climate engineering techniques — such as deploying reflective solar sails, dispersing nanoparticles, or laying aerogel tiles — to warm the surface by at least 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), enough to melt subsurface ice and release trapped carbon dioxide. This warming would thicken the Martian atmosphere and potentially support the presence of stable liquid water.
The second phase would introduce extremophile microbes — likely anaerobic and genetically engineered ones — capable of surviving in Mars' harsh conditions and kickstarting ecological succession. These organisms would begin producing oxygen and organic matter, slowly altering planetary chemistry.
The third and longest phase would focus on building a complex biosphere, increasing atmospheric pressure and oxygen content to eventually support more advanced plant life, and, in the very long term, potentially allow humans to breathe unassisted.

The study's authors agree: If we're to have any chance of terraforming Mars, we must move forward on multiple fronts simultaneously.
"Answering the question of when and how to start making other worlds habitable requires a clear understanding of the costs and benefits, which can only be adequately assessed based on a combination of theory and experiments, with input from diverse fields including physics, chemistry, materials science and biology," said Kite.
Right now, we need to continue to study Mars. Lanza advocates for the Mars Sample Return mission, a NASA-European Space Agency campaign to bring home material collected on the Red Planet by the Perseverance rover.
"The samples are incredibly well documented and analyzed to the best of our ability on Mars," she said. "Now we need to bring those back, because that's going to help us answer some of these fundamental questions. What is Mars made out of? Are there traces of life?"
And, as we continue to visit the Red Planet, we can put terraforming concepts into practice.
"Upcoming Mars surface missions in 2028 or 2031 should include small-scale experiments to de-risk terraforming strategies, such as warming localized regions," said DeBenedictis.
Then, of course, we need to continue to innovate new technologies that will allow us to terraform Mars in the future.
All this is to say, while fully terraforming Mars might take generations, the decisions start now.
"This is how we get from the imagination and the concept to some reality that has totally changed our world," said Lanza. "We should really keep doing science — it's transformational."
The new study was published last month in the journal Nature Astronomy.

With momentum building around the idea that the company will probably have to spin off its ailing chip factories to survive, now the President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump, has called for the immediate resignation of Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan. Trump's post earlier today on Truth Social reads in full, "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this problem!" While that is a pretty shocking message for the Intel CEO and Intel more broadly, it is perhaps not entirely surprising. That's because US Republican Senator, Tom Cotton, recently raised questions with Intel's board regarding Lip-Bu Tan's associations with Chinese firms and a criminal case involving his former company, Cadence Design. According to Reuters, "Cotton asked in the letter to Intel chairperson Frank Yeary whether the company's board was aware of the subpoenas sent to Cadence during Tan's time there as CEO before Intel hired him. Cotton asked what measures were taken to address those concerns." In reply Intel told Reuters, "Intel and Mr. Tan are deeply committed to the national security of the United States and the integrity of our role in the U.S. defense ecosystem," and indicated that it would address the matters raised by Senator Cotton, though it's not clear when or how. Cotton reportedly also asked whether Intel's board had required Tan to divest any holdings linked to the Chinese military or Communist Party, and likewise if Tan had fully disclosed his Chinese ties as part of Intel's involvement in the Secure Enclave programme, which is designed to ensure the secure supply of microelectronics for defence. Exactly what happens from here and how serious this will turn out to be is anyone's guess. At best, Trump's Truth Social diktats come and go with dizzying velocity. Is this one that the 47th President will stick with or quickly forget? Either way, it definitely comes at an absolutely terrible time for Intel, with the company itself admitting that it hasn't won any significant customers for its new 18A chip production tech and conceding that if things don't go better for the node that follows, known as 14A, then it may have to give up on cutting-edge chip production altogether. So, the last thing Intel needs right now is a scandal involving its CEO and perhaps even his forced departure. Quite how the company and its workforce can be expected to stay focussed on the very challenging technical tasks at hand with this chaos going on, one can only speculate. But you have to worry for Lip Bu Tan's longevity at Intel, that's for sure.

Whether you see it as an advantage or a disadvantage, today of all days, one can't help but deny there's something… unique about the US thanks to President Trump. During this very AI-centric 24 hours for Trump—with his unveiling of the administration's AI action plan and his talk at the All-In Podcast's 'Winning the AI Race' summit—Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also took to the summit stage and had some positive words to share about the US president (via RapidResponse47 on X). "America's unique advantage that no country could possibly have", Huang says, "is President Trump." Said without an air of hesitation, mind. The Nvidia CEO explains that this is primarily because the president has understood the importance of energy for AI: "On the first day of his administration, he realised the importance of AI, and he realised the importance of energy. For the last I don't know how many years, energy production was vilified, if you guys remember. We can't create new industries without energy. You can't reshore manufacturing without energy. You can't sustain a brand-new industry like artificial intelligence without energy. If we decide, as a country, the only thing we want is IP—to be an IP-only, a services-only country—then we don't need much energy. But if we want to produce things, something as vital as artificial intelligence, then we need energy." Huang is certainly right that Trump has pushed for more energy production. In April, for instance, he signed an Executive Order "requiring the automatic rescission of outdated regulations to unleash American innovation and energy production." And the president does, of course, seem to be set on pushing AI and ensuring America remains the king of that particular castle. That's surely at least part of what was discussed behind closed doors between Huang and Trump. And it is, of course, what the president is aiming for with his action plan, which looks to chart "a decisive course to cement US dominance in artificial intelligence", through, for instance, deregulation and AI exportation. This latter point is one that Huang was keen on emphasising after the Trump administration restricted the export of Nvidia's chips to China. Those restrictions have since been lifted somewhat, as Nvidia can now continue H20 exports to the eastern superpower. Given all this, it's not exactly surprising that Huang would be acting as hype man for the president, here. As it stands, Nvidia holds the (hardware) keys to the AI kingdom, and it's a kingdom that the president wants the US to lead the charge of. None of this is to call the headstrong push into all things AI-wise, mind you. That particular question is one we might not know the answer to until we're already there, in a completely AI-clad world. One would hope that fact might inspire a little caution, but alas. There are also many, I'm sure, who will be keen to point out that energy deregulation and ramped energy production for AI might not be the wisest decision, either. Though the retort would be that the AI arms race is one the US cannot afford to lose. Whichever side of that particular argument you come down on, it's a big bet to take. AI companies are borrowing and spending billions of dollars and have yet to see anywhere near break-even returns. Some might call that a bubble, others a necessary investment into the fourth industrial revolution. Whatever the case, it looks like the US president and Nvidia CEO are walking the same road, for now. Even if Trump does seem to want this hefty amount of power consumption explained to him. I suppose it's never a good idea to assume consistency with the Trump administration, given the record of flip flops. So shame on me for not seeing this particular flippy flop coming, as just one week after calling for Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan's resignation, the US President has called his "success and rise" an "amazing story", and has hinted at possible collaboration with Intel. Speaking on Truth Social after meeting with the Intel CEO yesterday, Trump says: "The meeting was a very interesting one. His success and rise is an amazing story. Mr. Tan and my Cabinet members are going to spend time together, and bring suggestions to me during the next week. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Intel also spoke positively about the meeting: "Earlier today, Mr. Tan had the honor of meeting with President Trump for a candid and constructive discussion on Intel's commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership. We appreciate the President's strong leadership to advance these critical priorities and look forward to working closely with him and his Administration as we restore this great American company." Talk of the president's "strong leadership" from Tan isn't exactly a surprise, given what we've seen previously from tech CEOs. I suppose it makes sense for these companies to stay on Trump's good side. Recent pleasantries aside, last week, despite the president not having the ability to force Tan's resignation, Trump said, "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this problem!" That "conflict" was in reference to Tan's alleged ties to China. He was previously CEO of Cadence Design Systems, and this company pleaded guilty this year and agreed to pay over $140 million for "unlawfully exporting semiconductor design tools to a restricted PRC Military University." It's also been reported by Reuters that the Intel CEO invested $200 million or more in hundreds of Chinese companies between 2012 and 2024. It is worth noting that such investments in Chinese companies isn't necessarily strange, if you're running a diverse investment portfolio. It could very well be just business, as they say. Perhaps Lip-Bu Tan relayed something similar to Trump, resulting in the flipped opinion. Y'know, appeal to the business mogul side of the ex-Apprentice host US president. Or, perhaps it was the national importance of Intel, and Tan's commitment to the company as a bastion of US technology, that he laid on heavy. The CEO had previously mentioned the possibility of ditching its 14A process, and some interpreted this as a way to get the US gov to the table to help out, because it probably won't want to let the all-American tech company disappear entirely. Trump's talk of "spending time together" and "bringing suggestions to me" certainly reinforces this idea. And with former Intel board members arguing for Intel fabs to be bought up by the likes of Nvidia, Qualcomm, Broadcom, et al, to create an "American Foundry", the president must be keenly aware of the national importance of the US chip giant and its future. Still, that doesn't explain why the flip concerning Lip-Bu Tan specifically. Maybe it was just a way to get the Intel CEO to the table quicker and more ready to discuss US-first solutions. Whatever the case, he seems to be back in Trump's good books, for now.
