Fenerbahce see off Feyenoord to book Champions League playoff with Benfica

The Guardian2 days ago
José Mourinho is one round away from taking Fenerbahce back into the Champions League for the first time in 17 years.
The storied head coach's team surged into the Champions League qualifying playoffs by overturning a two-goal deficit on aggregate Tuesday with a 5-2 qualifying round win against Robin van Persie's Feyenoord.
Fenerbahce went through 6-4 on aggregate and will face Benfica, where Mourinho got his first head coach job 25 years ago, with a place in the 36-team league phase at stake.
The first leg is in Istanbul next Wednesday with the return on 27 August at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon, where Mourinho lasted less than three months in 2000.
Benfica advanced after beating Nice 2-0 at home, having won the first leg by the same score in France last week.
Fenerbahce last played in the old group stage of the Champions League in the 2008-09 season and its biggest rival, Galatasaray, are also in the draw as Turkish champions.
Fenerbahce had lost 2-1 in the Netherlands last week and fell further behind when the Feyenoord defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe scored in the 41st minute.
Mourinho saw his players rally quickly with two goals before half-time – the second by the Colombia forward Jhon Durán, on a season-long loan from Saudi club Al Nassr. The former Manchester United midfielder Fred padded the lead early in the second half before Taliscacompleted the scoring.
Rangers advanced to the playoffs 4-2 on aggregate against Viktoria Plzen despite a 2-1 defeat in the Czech Republic.
The Scottish club will welcome Club Brugge in next week's playoff first leg, after the Belgian side staged a 3-2 comeback win against Salzburg to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
Pafos, champions of Cyprus, beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate. Pafos will play Red Star Belgrade, the 1991 European Cup winners, who beat Lech Poznan 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Serbia.
Copenhagen beat its near neighbour Malmö 5-0, one week after a first-leg scoreless draw. The Danish side's reward is a two-legged playoff against the Swiss champions Basel.
Qarabag of Azerbaijan routed North Macedonian champion Shkendija 5-1 and 6-1 on aggregate, to earn a playoff against Ferencvaros, a 3-0 winner in Budapest against Ludogorets of Bulgaria.
Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty won a penalty shootout at Slovan Bratislava, after the teams drew 1-1 on aggregate. They will travel to Scotland for the playoff first leg against Celtic.

Djed Spence signs new contract at Tottenham

Versatile full-back Spence only signed fresh terms last October until 2028, but has been rewarded for a fine breakthrough campaign at Spurs. Spence made 35 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, after eventually being handed his full debut in December – two-and-a-half-years after he first joined the club. After Spence was deemed a 'club signing' by former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte in 2022, the former Nottingham Forest defender had mixed loans at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa. Spence might have left Spurs last summer, but instead forced his way into the plans of then-boss Ange Postecoglou and played his part in their Europa League triumph. Postecoglou's replacement Thomas Frank has quickly placed his trust in Spence and started him in Wednesday's Super Cup loss to Paris St Germain. The latest stage of the 25-year-old's resurgence is to earn improved terms to ensure his long-term future remains at Tottenham. Speaking in Udine before his new contract had been finalised, Spence was quizzed on the prospect of Spurs being active during the final fortnight of the summer transfer window. Injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have left Tottenham short on attacking midfield options, which is why the club has this week opened talks with Manchester City and Crystal Palace respectively over the potential signings of Savinho and Eberechi Eze, PA understands. Our 2025/26 Premier League campaign kicks off on Saturday. 👉 @Castrol — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 14, 2025 'I'm not sure who has been linked or who is going to come in, but I think yeah whoever comes in will definitely add strength to the squad and will be a good thing for us,' Spence admitted. 'Yeah, (Champions League), it's a great competition, it's the big stage and everyone wants to show what they can do on the biggest stage, so yeah, looking forward to it.' Before Spurs return to Europe's elite competition next month, morale must be lifted after their midweek shoot-out loss. Spence urged Tottenham to bounce back in their Premier League opener with Burnley on Saturday, which will be Frank's first fixture at home. He added: 'I think we've got to keep our heads up first and foremost. Then starting Saturday, we play at home, get a win and take it from there. 'I think the main thing (asked by Frank) is be solid at the back and our target is to keep as many clean sheets as possible. You do that and you win trophies, you win titles.'
