'Now that we are here, we are excited to keep expanding the idea of what any kind of space could be and help build that kind of third space that's not work and it's not home. It's that third space that you can go and be yourself and build strong relationships,' said co-owner Anelise Tarnowski.
The Grand Opening Celebration is from 7:00 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, May 31st. You can learn more about the space and what the Rook Room has to offer by checking out its Facebook page.

Rook Room opens Saturday with 700+ board games

The Rook Room, a board game café and lounge years in the making, officially opens its doors Saturday — and Axios got an early look during a media preview Wednesday. Why it matters: It's the only space of its kind in Des Moines, offering more than 700 unique board games to play alongside a full food and drinks menu. State of play: The new hangout is situated in the former downtown space of St. Kilda restaurant, which closed at that location late last year. What they're saying: Co-owner Tony Tandeski tells Axios he hopes the Rook Room becomes a neighborhood hub — a place where, like the 1980s TV show "Cheers," "everybody knows your name." There will be regular tournaments and game learning sessions, he said. The intrigue: Game donations are welcome, and many on the shelves are from local players. 🍽️ On the menu: A range of sandwiches and snacks, including an achiote lime chicken sandwich (mozzarella, pico de gallo and lime cream) and spicy pineapple skewers — a nod to Tandeski's favorite fruit. Specialty drinks include the Charisma Check (Jameson, pineapple juice, sour, caramel and vanilla) and the RG&T (Revelton mulberry gin, lavender syrup and tonic). If you go: Regular hours are 8am–midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 8am–10pm on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays.

New tactile mural, sensory wellness space helps Ruby Van Meter students find calm

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new tactile mural and sensory wellness space at Ruby Van Meter School is designed to give students a place to reset, find calm, and care for their emotional well-being during the school day. 'It's pretty cool!' says student Dakota Matchinsky. 'It looks like nature and makes me feel calm.' Artist Jill Wells says that's exactly what she was trying to create. 'I know when I get anxious I need a space to just be,' she says. 'Adventure Pass' is back at Iowa public libraries The B Well Foundation helped make the project possible. 'We want to create calm, safe spaces in schools so students can reach their full potential,' says Billy Weathers. Ruby Van Meter serves students with significant disabilities and the new rooms are meant for both them, and their teachers and staff. 'This is amazing,' says teacher Jennifer Nordstrom. 'We want people to know that our kids are just like everyone else, they just have some big feelings and communication challenges. This helps them deal with those things in a beautiful space, which they deserve.'
