Nostalgic drama hailed as ‘best film of 2022' and 'masterpiece' available to stream now

Daily Record19-06-2025
The Scots movie, starring Paul Mescal, has a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is certified fresh.
Aftersun was met with huge critical acclaim when it was released in 2022 - earning Paul Mescal an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film, as well as kick-starting the career of young Scots actress Frankie Corio.
The pair would go on to become the main attraction at most awards events that year as the movie - written and directed by Scot Charlotte Wells - scooped a raft of accolades including the BAFTA for Best Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Hailed by critics as one of the "greatest depictions of depression and grief captured on film" the plot focuses on the themes of childhood, parenthood and memory.

The story follows an 11-year-old Scottish girl called Sophie as she goes on holiday to to a Turkish resort with her dad, Callum, on the eve of his 31st birthday.
The film was occasionally shot through a mini video camera adding to the period texture, and is an ode to nostalgia with hints of something far darker.
It received universal praise across the board from critics, who heralded Wells' direction and screenplay, and the performances of the stars.
Aftersun was also named one of the best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and earned Normal People star Mescal an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Mescal himself was a huge cheerleader of the project, and was full of compliments for his young co-star, who was 12 at the time, when she was awarded Variety's '10 Brits to Watch' at the Newport Beach Film Festival for her performance.

Mescal told a star-studded audience the West Lothian youngster will 'take over the world' as he stood up to collect his own gong for Artist of Distinction.
He said: 'This is a crazy honour, it feels like yesterday I graduated from drama school. It feels like a short time and so much water has passed under the bridge. This lady here [Frankie Corio] is going to take over the world."

Corio, who lives in Livingston with her teacher mum Leona and bathroom fitter dad Frank as well as her two siblings, was also dubbed a 'rising star' by Hollywood veteran Kate Blanchett and nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress, making her the youngest person ever to make the shortlist for the gong.
The young Scot - who was aged just 10 when she was cast in the film - has gone on to build a bright future in the industry. Now 14, she made the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list earlier this year, which singles out emerging young talent. Corio has also starred in 2024 horror Bagman alongside Sam Claflin, and 2024 short film Stray.
Frankie had no previous experience in acting and beat out 700 hopefuls to et the part after her mum sent a photo of her to a casting call. She also won the London Critics' Circle Award for Young British/Irish Performer.

Movie fans who have yet to see Aftersun - or those who loved it so much they want to watch again and again - are now able to stream it for free, as it's just been added to BBC iPlayer's Film Premiere section, and it'll be available there for nine months.
The movie has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 95% rating on the 'Tomatometer', and an 82% 'Popcorn Rating'. Critics and movie goers are united in their positive feedback on the film.
One fan said: "Deeply sad and profoundly moving, yet a powerful testament to the undeniable love between father and daughter. A true masterpiece."

One added: "Beautiful yet sad. Actors were incredibly talented."
Prabhjot Bains, Tilt Magazine, said: "Charlotte Wells' picture-perfect debut visually epitomizes the heart-wrenching processes of memory."
Gautam Sunder, from The Hindu, added: "Director Charlotte Wells gives us one of the most piercing debuts in recent memory with this intimate dad-daughter relationship drama."

Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet put split rumours to bed with loved-up holiday snap

Power couple Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have been spotted together in Budapest after more than a month apart and after endless split rumours Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have been spotted together for the first time in over six weeks, finally putting pause on breakup speculation that has surrounded the couple in recent weeks. ‌ The pair were seen in Budapest, Hungary, where Chalamet is currently on location filming Dune: Part Three. The sighting comes just days after reports claimed that Kylie had been 'secretly jetting off' to see the actor whenever her schedule allowed. ‌ The unexpected reunion took place inside a local café, and it didn't take long for the employees to share their star-struck moment online. It comes after Kylie Timothee's 'distance' was explained as split rumours continue. ‌ Staff at the shop called Budapest Baristas posted a group photo with the couple, expressing their shock and excitement in a lighthearted caption: 'Today Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet just walked into our coffeeshop at Buda. "We were so in confusion, we could barely concentrate, but I think you can see it on our faces. Thank God everyone looked at them, not us! They were super nice and kind, thank you for coming @kyliejenner @tchalamet.' In the photo, Timothée, 29, kept a low profile, concealing his new haircut for the Dune film by pulling a white T-shirt over his head. He accessorised with dark sunglasses, a Brentwood Country Mart cap, and a gold bracelet, flashing a peace sign to the camera. Meanwhile, Kylie, 28, appeared effortlessly stylish, wearing a white tank layered over another top, her long dark hair down, and a soft makeup look. The last time the couple were seen publicly together was on July 5, enjoying a yacht getaway in St. Tropez. ‌ Since then, neither had been photographed together, and online speculation of a split began gaining attention. Rumours grew further after Kylie celebrated her 28th birthday without any public acknowledgment from Timothée. ‌ Instead of posting a birthday tribute, the Call Me By Your Name star shared a cryptic Instagram Story. The Oscar-nominated actor instead posted an image of boxing legend Muhammad Ali mid-victory and alongside it, he wrote the phrase 'Dream Big' in red script. Fans immediately read into the post, questioning whether it was a subtle message directed at Kylie or simply a teaser for his upcoming film, Marty Supreme, set to release on Christmas Day. The film reportedly tells the story of Marty Mauser, 'a young man with a dream no one respects, [who] goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness,' according to IMDb. ‌ But in the absence of a direct birthday post, something the Kardashian-Jenner circle is known for, followers feared the relationship had quietly ended. Meanwhile, Kylie's family celebrated her birthday with their usual affection. Kris Jenner shared a heartfelt message alongside a carousel of throwback images. ‌ Alongside the sweet snaps, Kris wrote: 'Happy birthday to my baby girl!! You are truly beautiful inside and out… You are so smart, strong, creative, loving, kind, funny, and always so supportive… I love you beyond measure… Mommy.' Kendall Jenner also posted nostalgic snaps of the two growing up together, writing: 'my little lady forever,' which Kylie excitedly responded to with: 'kendall jenner !!!!' Kylie and Timothée have remained relatively private about their romance since first being linked in April 2023. ‌ Their relationship was officially confirmed when they were seen cuddling and kissing at Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour in Los Angeles that September. Despite being one of Hollywood's most-watched couples, they have chosen to avoid making public statements, instead letting rare outings and the occasional paparazzi shot do the talking. ‌ More recently, fans noticed a series of cryptic Instagram Stories shared by Kylie, featuring moody song lyrics that many interpreted as emotional clues about her relationship status. However, following Kylie's recent Budapest trip, it seems like the pair are still very much together - and fans couldn't be more delighted.

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose devastated by mum's death at 57 as she pays tribute

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose announced that her mother, Gina DeBose, died, aged 57, over the weekend, three years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer Ariana DeBose has announced that her mother, Gina DeBose, has died three years after being diagnosed with cancer. The Oscar winner shared the news this afternoon and paid tribute to her parent, who was her "best friend". ‌ The actor, 34, who rose to fame on Broadway before starring in the acclaimed film West Side Story (2021), shared the news on Instagram earlier. She told her followers on the platform that Gina died, aged 57, on Sunday morning as a result of complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. ‌ Tony Awards host Ariana included a number of photos of the late teacher in the post. She paid tribute to her in the caption, describing her mother as a "warrior queen" and telling fans that she had been a "force of epic proportion". ‌ Ariana wrote in the post today: "At 10:28 am on August 17th my gorgeous, hilarious, outspoken, warrior queen Mother - Gina Michelle DeBose - passed away due to complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. I couldn't be more proud of her and how she fought this insidious disease over the past 3 years. She was 57 years young. "She was my favorite person, my biggest fan and toughest critic. My best friend. She was my date to every important moment in my professional and personal life - and I wouldn't have it any other way." The former Hamilton cast member continued by writing: "It had always been the two of us for as long as I can remember. Through lean times, and there were many of those & green times. "She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn't be where I am without her. I meant it when I said my Oscar 'is just as much hers as it is mine'." Ariana added: "My mom loved to paint, play cards, listen to good music & snuggle with her cats; but her life's purpose, aside from being my mom, was educating young people. She passed just shy of delivering 30 years of service as a public school teacher (most currently 8th grade social studies)." ‌ She added that Gina "thrived" in a classroom and her creativity "knew no bounds". Ariana said that her mother was "beloved" and "respected" by colleagues and students. Ariana said: "The greatest advocate for the underdog, a believer in arts education and the smartest person I know - with a willingness to speak her mind regardless of the consequences. But she was also a heart forward individual who believed in hard work, compassion and empathy in the same breath." She went on to share: "For the record: my greatest and most proud achievement will always be to have made her proud. I love you mommy. Now travel amongst the seas, the winds and the angels as I know you always loved to do." Ariana encouraged anyone wanting to make a donation in Gina's honour to support three cancer organisations. She provided links to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Ovaries. Talk About Them and Teal Diva in the post.
