As Tesco hikes its prices, how do the supermarkets' meal deal prices compare?
Tesco has announced a 25p price increase for its lunchtime meal deal for all customers from today (21 August).
Prices for the meal deal - consisting of a main (such as a sandwich or wrap), a snack and a drink - have risen from £3.60 to £3.85 for Clubcard members, while non-Clubcard members will now have to pay £4.25.
It comes after prices were hiked just a year ago, as well as in 2022.
A Tesco spokesperson defended the move, saying the meal deal "remains great value".
Why is Tesco increasing the cost of its meal deal?
Tesco has not specifically said why it is increasing the price of its meal deal, but it comes following years of high food inflation, pushing prices up for both consumers and retailers.
Grocery prices are 5% higher than a year ago and Tesco is among dozens of retailers who have written to chancellor Rachel Reeves, warning that new taxes in the autumn budget would push prices up even higher.
Other supermarkets - including Sainsbury's - have also put the price of their meal deals up during the cost of living crisis, reflecting the economic challenges.
Tesco highlighted its broad range of lunch choices when announcing the news of the price rise.
However, it also comes off the back of recent figures that showed Tesco enjoying its largest monthly share gain since December 2024, as its hold of the market rose by 0.8 percentage points to 28.4%, driven by sales growth of 7.4% compared to last year.
Which meal deals are the cheapest?
For Co-op members, it will cost £3.50 for a lunch meal deal, and £4 for non-members. Their website states that these prices will remain in place until at least the end of the year.
For a cold sandwich and a regular hot or cold drink, Greggs charges £3.75. The bakery chain offers a variety of other lunchtime deals for their pastries and savoury snacks - the most expensive being £4.95 for a hot sandwich and wedges with a regular hot/cold drink.
A main, snack and a drink will cost £4 for Boots customers, or £3.75 for anyone with a Boots Advantage Card. Prices are higher in London - £5 for customers and £4.75 for those with with Advantage Card.
Tesco's new meal deals price is £3.85 for Clubcard members and £4.25 for everyone else. Their meal deals were priced at £3 for 10 years - before prices rose in October 2022 as food prices shot up.
Sainsbury's offer their meal deals for £3.95 - and in a marked difference from other supermarkets, the price is the same for customers without loyalty cards. However, Sainsbury's increased the price from £3.75 in June this year, having already increased it from £3.50 in July 2024.
Morrisons customers with loyalty cards will pay £3.50 for their meal deal, while it costs £4 for everyone else. The supermarket increased the cost of its meal deal by 50p from £3 to £3.50 in 2022.
Upmarket supermarket Waitrose charges £5 for everyone for their lunchtime meal deal. It was introduced in 2023 and the price has stayed the same since then.
Asda does not have a meal deal that offers a set price for three lunch items. However, customers are able to mix and match three selected items and get the cheapest one free.
Food inflation keeps rising
Recently released figures have shows that supermarket inflation is actually falling - but retail experts say it remains "well past the point at which price rises really start to bite".
Grocery prices were 5% higher than a year ago in the four weeks to 10 August, according to market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator, which was recently renamed from Kantar.
However, this was down from July's 5.2%, which represented a rise from inflation of 4.7% a month earlier and marked the highest level since January 2024.
Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: "What people pay for their supermarket shopping often impacts their spending across other parts of the high street too, including their eating and drinking habits out of the home."
While Tesco enjoyed its largest monthly share gain since December 2024, both Asda and Co-op saw sales down on a year ago, by 2.6% and 3.2% respectively.

Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner jokingly claimed he may have to come out of retirement to play center-back if Marc Guehi leaves the club this summer. Guehi, 25, has been heavily linked with a summer transfer, and Liverpool and Newcastle have made inquiries for the England defender. Palace has demanded $60 million for Guehi, but Liverpool values the player closer to $47 million as he's entered the final 12 months of his contract. Palace secured a crucial 1-0 win over Fredrikstad FK on Thursday as the Premier League club attempts to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Palace is on the verge of losing star midfielder Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, and Glasner hinted that Guehi could also be sold before the transfer deadline. Eze is close to joining Arsenal in a deal worth $90 million, but Glasner awkwardly joked that Guehi could be the next player to leave. "If Marc [Guehi] leaves, maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre-back," Glasner said. "We have to act. It's Crystal Palace's future and we need to add numbers." Glasner has made it clear that he wants to improve the squad, but the club has only made two signings this summer. Ajax defender Borna Sosa was acquired in a deal worth $2.6 million, and Palace also signed goalkeeper Walter Benitez on a free transfer from PSV. Palace has retained its star players until now, as Eze is expected to join Arsenal this week. Palace chairman Steve Parish suggested that Guehi could be the next marquee player to leave the club and called it a "difficult situation" due to spending rules. "If Marc Guehi wants to sign a new contract… then he can stay! It's a difficult situation," Parish told Channel 5. "Everyone has to sell players to comply with the rules. That's a situation that we will have to look at in the next days." Palace risks losing Guehi on a free transfer next summer, meaning the club could be forced to cash in on the defender. However, Glasner has been keen to build on last season's success and has shown signs of displeasure with the club hierarchy. It's been a frustrating summer for Palace off the field after a dream end to last season, which saw them beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup for the first time. In winning the competition, Palace should have qualified for the UEFA Europa League, but the club was penalized. As shareholders also owned the French club Lyon, which qualified for the Europa League, UEFA demoted Palace to the Conference League. Palace will still need a broad squad to facilitate domestic and European games, but has neglected business until later in the window. Glasner shared his frustrations with the lack of urgency. With Eze set to leave the club, Palace has 10 days to find a replacement. "We need to add, not numbers; it's easy to add 10 numbers," Glasner said. "We need the right players. It's not surprising for anyone that Ebs [Eze] left, honestly, it's not surprising. Because five days earlier, we couldn't have done anything if he leaves. "We knew that the chances were very high that this will happen and honestly, again, I say it like it is, we missed (the chance) to replace him early enough, that's completely our fault and nobody else's fault."

Computer science graduates struggle to secure their first jobs

Eddie Hart studied computer science and cybersecurity at Newcastle University, graduating in 2024. He says he knew getting into the tech workforce would be a challenge, but "I thought it would be a little easier". Even when "junior" roles were advertised, they often demanded two or more years professional experience, Mr Hart says. "It's not realistic, and it's just discouraging the good candidates from even trying." To him it seems clear that potential employers are using AI tools to automate the simpler parts of coder's work, tasks which would traditionally allow newcomers to build up experience. While companies undoubtedly benefit from using AI in some parts of their operations, says Mr Hart, "I don't think replacing developers entirely with AI is sustainable." ChatGPT, and other coding tools, are being blamed for a collapse in tech job openings, particularly for younger software developers and engineers. A report by the UK's National Foundation for Education Research showed a 50% decline in tech job adverts between 2019/20 and 2024/25, with entry level roles particularly affected. The report cited the "anticipated impact of artificial intelligence" as one of the factors behind this. At the same time, software developers have widely adopted AI code tools, while simultaneously expressing distrust in their output. Research by Stack Overflow, a software knowledge platform, shows almost half use AI tools daily, despite just one third actually trusting the output of such tools. Prashanth Chandrasekar, CEO of Stack Overflow, says it's "a tricky time to graduate". More broadly, he says, its research shows developers are choosing to stay put, despite many expressing dissatisfaction with their work. "People are probably running for safety a little bit." All of this means young technologists are finding it harder to get that critical first job. The stress of finding a job is also being raised by the use of AI in the job application process. Mr Hart came across one highly automated application process which had eight stages, the first of which was to answer 20 exam-style questions about himself. Such exercises can take up hours of time. Friends had been asked to record and upload answers to interview style questions. "And then that's just reviewed by AI and a computer makes the decision. It just feels like you don't get that respect of at least being rejected by a human," he says. Colin, who didn't want his full name to be used, studied computer science at university, graduating in 2024. He spent almost a year working through the recruitment process for one large company – only to be ultimately unsuccessful. Even smaller firms often use AI to screen applications, he says, meaning CVs have to structured to be "AI friendly". Colin would then find he was being interviewed by people "who have clearly not read my CV". Both Mr Hart and Colin said they knew the senior roles were still out there. But, they wondered, who will fill them if younger developers like them were unable to secure jobs. Paul Dix, CTO and co-founder at California-based database firm, InfluxData says in any economic downturn or disruption, junior software developers were the ones who got hit hardest. But he says, "If nobody's hiring younger developers, then you're going to arrive at this point where you don't have senior developers either, because you've completely killed your pipeline." More positively says Rajiv Ramaswami, CEO of US enterprise cloud firm Nutanix, "Some of these younger folks coming out of college actually have more experience using AI tooling compared to traditional ways of programming." Ramaswami adds: "I find the market for talent to be the best we've seen in several years." Mr Chandrasekar says the industry had always had an "apprenticeship" type model, with a pipeline of young people coming in and working with senior developers. And, he suggests, executives and companies that had invested heavily in AI tech are under pressure to show some return on that investment. Even if that was by simply cutting back on hiring. Stack Overflow's research also found that while 64% of developers perceived AI as a threat to their jobs, this was four percentage points down on the previous year. "They've now seen some of the limitations, where you need humans in the loop," Mr Chandrasekar notes. Previous tech disruptions had sparked fears that both senior or junior jobs would disappear, says Mr Chandrasekar. But invariably they result in more jobs as people uncover new problems and challenges. "There's going to be an insatiable appetite for technologists and developers to go and build those things to help solve those problems." But that spike in demand might not come in time for some of today's graduates. Mr Hart has secured a role as a security engineer at UK-based cybersecurity firm Threatspike, which he gained through a very human centred job process.
