Newcastle remove scene which may ‘inadvertently cause offence' from kit launch video

New York Times01-07-2025
Newcastle United removed a scene from the launch video promoting their new third kit due to it briefly displaying a version of the Japanese imperialist flag.
The club were promoting their new blue and orange third kit for 2025-26 on Tuesday, with a version of the flag appearing briefly in Newcastle's black-and-white colours, alongside a club crest and 'NUFC Japan' in its centre.

The video included a Newcastle supporter who had been flown in from Japan for the kit launch.
The original version of the flag, also known as the Rising Sun Flag, consists of a red disc from which sixteen red rays emanate on a white background.
In the 19th century, the flag was adapted by the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy, and it remains associated with Japan's defence forces and navy, while it is also present in Japanese culture. However, the symbolism remains controversial in several countries — including China, South Korea, North Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Russia — due to its connotations with Japanese imperialism and militarism.
The reaction to our new third kit with adidas has been special, but the launch video contained a scene that could inadvertently cause offence. We apologise for that. We've removed the scene from the film to make sure that as many fans as possible can enjoy it.
— Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 1, 2025
Newcastle are travelling to Singapore and South Korea for a pre-season tour later this month for matches against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, among others.
A Newcastle spokesperson has said: 'We have been alerted to the appearance of a flag in our recent third kit launch video that could inadvertently cause offence.
'In response, we immediately removed the video from circulation and have taken steps to edit the visual from all future content. We sincerely apologise for any offence caused.'
Newcastle subsequently posted up an edited version of the video without the appearance of the flag.

Newcastle United submit opening bid for Hugo Ekitiké

Newcastle United are pushing forward in their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Hugo Ekitiké. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Premier League side have submitted an opening offer to the Hessen club, higher than the €70m a previous club offered. This comes after it emerged that Newcastle had initiated contact with the entourage of Ekitiké, who scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances last season. However, although the Magpies' opening offer is appeasing, it's unlikely that SGE will accept as it's well below their valuation of the 23-year-old. Advertisement Could Hugo Ekitiké remain at Eintracht Frankfurt? As is well known, the Hessen club prove tough negotiators. They brought in €95m from Paris Saint-Germain for Randal Kolo Muani after signing the Frenchman on a free transfer 12 months earlier, while they stood firm on their €75m asking price for Omar Marmoush, who is since excelling at Manchester City. As such, Eintracht Frankfurt find themselves in a healthy financial position and aren't forced to sell. If Ekitiké does leave the Deutsche Bank Park this summer, SGE are well within their right to hold out for €90m-€100m for their prized asset. GGFN | Daniel Pinder

Newcastle working on deal worth around €75million for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike

Newcastle United are working on a deal worth around €75million to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. While an agreement is not yet close, talks are ongoing between the clubs over a potential deal which would eclipse Newcastle's previous record transfer – the €71.2m they paid Real Sociedad for Aleksander Isak in summer 2022. Advertisement Ekitike's proposed £20 million-plus transfer to Newcastle United in January 2022 broke down on deadline day but the north east club have continued to keep tabs on the 23-year-old. Ekitike scored 22 goals and notched 12 assists for Frankfurt in 2024-25 after signing for the Bundesliga club permanently in a deal worth €17.5m in the summer of 2024, following a loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain in the previous season. Then contracted to Ligue 1 side Reims, the France Under-21 international was unsure about the merits of a late-window move to St. James' Park three-and-a-half years ago despite the clubs reaching a framework agreement. He then joined PSG in the summer of 2022 on loan with an option to buy, which was exercised. His current terms with Frankfurt run until 2029. Should he depart the club, it would be the third time Frankfurt have negotiated a high-value departure for one of their attackers in the past two years, with Omar Marmoush leaving for Manchester City in the winter transfer window for a fee in the region of €70-75m, and Randal Kolo Muani joining PSG for €95m in 2023. Ekitike's 15 goals saw him tied with former team-mate Marmoush in the Bundesliga goalscoring charts for the 2024-25 season. He helped Frankfurt to a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga, securing Champions League football for just the second time in the club's history, the first time qualifying for the competition via league placing. The German club were knocked out of the Europa League by eventual champions Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals, despite Ekitike scoring the first goal in the 2-1 aggregate defeat. As reported by The Athletic last month, Manchester United also enquired about the availability of Ekitike this summer, while Chelsea were interested before the signings of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion. Advertisement Analysis by Newcastle correspondent Chris Waugh There has been a transformation in mood and also momentum in Newcastle's window. After what felt like a slow-burn start, with near-misses on several targets, suddenly there is optimism about what can be achieved ahead of their return to the Champions League. Caution must be applied, because a fee is yet to be agreed with Frankfurt and Newcastle have twice tried and failed to sign Ekitike before, in the January and summer windows of 2022, yet even being seriously in the conversation for the Frenchman once more underlines the ambitions of the ownership. Should Newcastle conclude this deal, then Ekitike would represent a marquee signing, similar to when Alexander Isak arrived in August 2022 and Sandro Tonali joined the following July. Ekitike is a player with elite potential and would really boost Newcastle's firepower. The obvious follow-up question is what this means for Isak's future, and the insistence is that Newcastle want to boast both among their frontline options. How Eddie Howe would keep that pair plus Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga happy is unclear, and the finances involved in retaining them all will stretch Newcastle from a PSR perspective, but those are enviable 'problems' to have. Concluding a transfer of this magnitude is not straightforward and it is far from complete yet, but this latest development feels extremely encouraging for Newcastle fans.

Forest target Liverpool winger as Elanga replacement this summer

Nottingham Forest Eye Move for Liverpool's Ben Doak After Elanga Departure Forest look to replace Elanga with Liverpool winger Nottingham Forest are exploring the possibility of signing Liverpool winger Ben Doak this summer, following Anthony Elanga's £55 million move to Newcastle United. The Sweden international's departure has left a void in Forest's attacking options, and according to The Express, Doak is among the names under consideration as a potential replacement. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement Forest had hoped to keep Elanga, but the lure of European football and Newcastle's growing project proved decisive. Elanga contributed six goals and 11 assists for Forest last season and described his time there as 'amazing', adding that the club 'really helped me to become the player I am today'. His exit now gives Forest room to reinvest, and their focus has turned to Anfield, where Doak is attracting growing interest. Interest in Doak builds across Europe Doak, 19, enjoyed a strong loan spell at Middlesbrough last season, where he scored three goals and provided seven assists in the Championship. His performances did not go unnoticed. PSV Eindhoven are reportedly among the clubs tracking his situation, while sides in Spain have also shown interest. Photo IMAGO Advertisement Closer to home, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Everton have all made enquiries earlier this summer, with Brentford maintaining long-standing interest in the Scottish winger. Forest are now the latest club to join the race, and with funds available from Elanga's sale, they could formalise their interest in the coming days. Liverpool value Doak amid summer reshuffle Liverpool are understood to value Doak at around £25 million. While not actively looking to sell, the club are aware of the growing demand for the young attacker, who joined from Celtic in 2022. Doak made his senior Liverpool debut shortly after arriving and has featured ten times for the Reds in all competitions. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement He also played a part in Sunday's 3-1 pre-season win over Preston North End, registering an assist and further showcasing his attacking potential. Doak is open to leaving Anfield if regular first-team football can be guaranteed, and Forest may offer a more immediate path to consistent minutes. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis Ben Doak has long been seen as one of the most promising young players at Liverpool. Quick, fearless and direct, he is exactly the kind of winger the club has built its modern identity around. But if this report is accurate, Liverpool may be ready to cash in. £25 million is a tempting figure for a player with limited top-flight minutes, and it would represent a healthy profit on the teenager signed from Celtic just two years ago. Advertisement Still, it feels early. Doak impressed on loan, showed flashes in pre-season, and already looks capable of contributing at Premier League level. In a summer that has already seen several departures, including Alexander-Arnold, Quansah and the passing of Jota, letting another young talent go could feel like a step back. Yes, there is an argument that loaning him again might not benefit either party. But selling outright, especially to a domestic rival like Forest, might be a decision the club come to regret. Supporters will be hoping this interest prompts Liverpool to rethink. Doak has the tools. What he needs now is trust, patience and a proper chance.
