Kuwait Fund for Development drives regional shift toward clean energy through Gulf power interconnection expansion

Zawyaa day ago
Kuwait City – The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has announced that the expansion of the Gulf Power Interconnection Project, launched in December 2022, constitutes a strategic milestone in advancing energy integration across the GCC. By enhancing electricity exchange efficiency and ensuring long-term sustainability, the initiative stands as a pivotal investment in the region's clean energy future.
Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Mr. Waleed Al‑Bahar, reiterated that Kuwait remains the primary economic beneficiary of the project. The new Al‑Wafra 400 kV Station will augment Kuwait's national grid capacity by approximately 2,500 megawatts, fortifying supply during peak demand and enhancing grid stability. Financing is delivered via two loans from the Kuwait Fund to the Gulf Interconnection Authority, totalling KWD 70 million (USD 224 million).
Crucially, the Al‑Wafra station and its link to Saudi Arabia are on track for completion by December 2024, enabling Kuwait to significantly advance energy resilience and regional connectivity. The Kuwait–Iraq interconnection (Al‑Wafra–Al‑Faw) is expected to be operational by May 2025, supporting expanded network capacity and cross-border energy exchange. The project is slated to begin operations by the end of 2024, with full readiness across the GCC–Iraq axis anticipated by 2026.
Mr. Al-Bahar further emphasized that the project underpins environmental goals by facilitating clean energy distribution and enabling electricity trade within the GCC and neighbouring regions, leveraging surplus capacity to generate long-term economic returns while reducing emissions.
Kuwait's involvement in the southern Iraq expansion positions the nation as a central hub for regional electricity trade, reinforcing ambitions around energy security, efficiency, and resilience, while reaffirming its leadership in regional energy integration strategy.
Technical Scope and Infrastructure
Al-Wafra 400 kV Station – A new high-capacity substation in Kuwait, central to the expanded grid infrastructure.

Dubai to get 200 ultra-fast EV charging stations by 2025 under Parkin–e& deal

Parkin has signed a 10-year agreement with charge&go to supercharge Dubai's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with 200 ultra-fast direct current (DC) charging stations. The project, scheduled to launch in October 2025, will cut charging times to under 30 minutes through advanced DC technology. The network will be rolled out at key destinations across Dubai, including high-density residential communities, major retail centres and leisure hubs, aligning with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and supporting the needs of more than 40,000 EVs currently on the road. EV charging in Dubai Phase one of the initiative will see the installation of 20 charging stations in some of the city's busiest areas, followed by a full rollout of 200 public and private charging points over the next 12 months. Unlike conventional alternating current (AC) systems, DC charger technology enables significantly faster charging. Customers will also benefit from real-time status updates, booking options and secure in-app payments through Parkin's mobile application. Mohamed Abdulla Al Ali, CEO of Parkin, said: 'This 10-year partnership with charge&go is a clear example of our commitment to providing cleaner, greener tech-driven mobility solutions to our customers. 'Working closely with our colleagues at e& allows us to tap into a global network of knowledge and expertise along with advanced services across diverse sectors. 'Both Parkin and e& share a commitment to leveraging technology to meet the needs of our digitally savvy clients, supporting Dubai's ongoing transformation into a global, sustainable and future-ready city. 'This collaboration is essential to accelerate the adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and to expand the necessary infrastructure to meet Dubai's growing ambitions for sustainable mobility.' Muammar Al Rukhaimi, CEO of Etisalat Services Holding, said: 'Dubai is rewriting the playbook on how big cities can embrace sustainability at scale, and this EV charging rollout marks a decisive step forward. 'At e&, we are fuelling a movement by deploying cutting-edge technology that delivers real-world impact while ensuring quicker charging turnarounds and a superior customer experience. 'This partnership with Parkin makes green mobility effortlessly accessible and shows how a city can grow boldly without costing the planet.' Parkin, which operates approximately 212,000 paid parking spaces across Dubai, first signed an MoU with charge&go in October 2024 during the GITEX exhibition. The new DC charging network will operate under a strict 'park and charge' protocol, ensuring designated bays are only occupied during active charging to prevent overstays and unauthorised use.

Iraq signs agreement with US energy giant Chevron on oil exploration

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani announced an agreement in principle on Tuesday between the Ministry of Oil and US energy company Chevron. Mr Al Sudani's office said the agreement includes four exploration blocks, the development of the Balad oilfield and possibly other fields and projects. During a meeting with Chevron vice president Frank Mount in Iraq, Mr Al Sudani welcomed the company's return to work in the country, 'affirming that the government has adopted a different approach in dealing with major oil companies and their investments in Iraq, particularly American ones', his office said. Mr Al Sudani also spoke of Chevron's efforts in transferring oil technology to Iraq, its community contributions and environmental policies it follows in its oil projects. Mr Mount celebrated the "heads of agreement" with Iraq as an important milestone. 'Iraq is a major producer of crude oil and holds substantial oil and gas resources," he said in a statement. "We are confident that Chevron, with its proven track record and expertise in successfully developing oil and gas projects, has the resources, experience and technology to support Iraq to further develop new energy resources.' The agreement in principle follows one made by US company SLB – formerly known as Schlumberger – in July. The contract signed between Iraq's Ministry of Oil and SLB was aimed at boosting natural gas production at the Akkas gasfield. Iraq's Oil Minister Hayan Abdel Ghani said at the time that the deal aimed to raise production levels to 100 million standard cubic feet a day. Mr Al Sudani also held talks with Baker Hughes chief executive Lorenzo Simonelli this year to discuss the US energy technology company's projects in Iraq. Despite being the second-largest producer in Opec, Iraq still depends on Iran for about a third of its electricity needs. Baghdad has come under increasing pressure from Washington to be less reliant on Tehran.
