Careless crossing and poor visibility, railway tracks in Ernakulam turn death traps
Kochi: Railway tracks in Ernakulam are becoming death traps as people throw caution to the wind. As many as 38 people died on railway tracks between Kalamassery and Cherthala this year so far, according to data collected by railway authorities. Of these, 24 died within the city limits, between Kalamassery and Ernakulam North stretch. Among these, eight deaths were reported in the Kalamassery area itself. According to railway officials, several factors contribute to this. These include high curvature of tracks, people crossing tracks while speaking over phones, bushes growing on both sides of tracks making the arrival of trains unobservable to pedestrians and suicide attempts. There have also been incidents where passengers sitting on footboards or standing near train doors accidentally fell onto railway tracks resulting in deaths. "One of the main causes of the high run-over rate in the city is people crossing tracks while using mobile phones. Identifying the exact reasons for such incidents is often challenging, as bodies are mostly found in bad condition and there are no witnesses. The curvature of the tracks further exacerbates the problem, preventing people from seeing approaching trains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Additionally, in many stretches, there is insufficient space for people to stand safely when they notice an approaching train," said an official with the railway protection force in Ernakulam. Even applying the emergency brake to avoid hitting a person on the track is often unsuccessful as the train stops 200-250m ahead of the intended spot. Such incidents often give sleepless nights to the loco pilots who witness the incidents. "What we now notice is that several people, especially migrant workers, cross the tracks while speaking over the phone or using headsets. In such situations they fail to hear the horns. There are numerous curves in the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. These curves often have limited visibility, reducing the reaction time for loco pilots as our attention will be on signals and tracks. Additionally, some individuals mistakenly believe that standing on the narrow space near the track is safe. Others opt to take selfies or reels on the small gap as trains approach, leading to accidents," said a loco pilot, who recently approached RPF after a young woman ran towards a moving train near Aluva railway station, under the influence of narcotic substances. A senior loco pilot said migrant workers, who live in crowded places, prefer to stroll near the tracks and sit on them, making them vulnerable to accidents. The officials also noticed that many consume alcohol and use narcotic substances behind the overgrown bushes and cross tracks carelessly, leading to accidents.
