‘Against principles': Nanded gurdwara board chief slams call to excommunicate families over non-Sikh wedlocks

Time of India23-07-2025
Amritsar: The Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Gurdwara Board administrator, Vijay Satbir Singh, has hit out at a demand by the heads of 27 Sikh families in Nanded, Maharashtra, to excommunicate families whose women married non-Sikh men.
When contacted, Vijay Satbir Singh called the demand "something ridiculous" and "against the very basic principles of Sikhism, which promotes equality and teaches not to differentiate people by their religion". "This is nothing but an act to gain cheap publicity and attract attention," said the administrator.
Earlier, a section of Sikhs from Nanded —including former members of the board — had appealed to the jathedar of Takht Hazur Sahib to issue the directives for excommunication.
Manpreet Singh Kunjiwalae, a former member of the board, said he wrote the letter to the jathedar and it was signed by heads of 27 Sikh families, who expressed concern over the increasing number of Sikh women marrying non-Sikh men. "It is concerning that Sikh women are choosing to marry outside the faith, turning away from Sikh men. What's more troubling is that instead of guiding them otherwise, many parents are supporting these decisions and accepting non-Sikhs as sons-in-law and fully integrating them into the family," he said.
He added they urged the jathedar to issue a formal directive on the matter during the upcoming meeting of the five Sikh high priests scheduled for July 24.

India's state refiners pause Russian oil buys amid US tariff pressure

India's state-owned oil refiners are pulling back from purchases of Russian crude for now, according to people with direct knowledge of the companies' procurement plans, as Washington ratchets up the pressure on New Delhi over the flows with a wave of harsh tariffs. Companies including Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp. and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. plan to skip spot purchases of the crude in the upcoming buying cycle, until there's clear government guidance, said the people, who asked not to be identified as they aren't authorized to speak publicly. On Thursday, IOC bought five million barrels of oil from the US, Brazil and Libya, the latest in a string of purchases for relatively quick delivery. The global oil market has zeroed in on India's crude purchasing after President Donald Trump doubled the levy on all Indian exports to the US as a direct punishment for the country's refiners taking Russian crude. The escalation — which hasn't yet been matched by similar action against China, another major buyer — is meant to put pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. The tension has swung futures this week as traders assess the odds of disruption to flows, as well as Moscow's ability to find alternative buyers should Indian refiners opt to take fewer barrels. Brent was little changed near $67 a barrel on Thursday, following a five-day drop. Officially, New Delhi hasn't given any direction to refiners to stop buying Moscow's crude, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government pushing back against Trump's tariffs. Bloomberg earlier reported that refiners had been asked to draw up plans for buying non-Russian crude. An oil ministry spokesman didn't immediately reply to an email seeking comment. Separately, IOC, BPCL and HPCL didn't reply to messages from Bloomberg seeking comment. Beyond term contracts, oil producers and refiners typically deal with purchases in short-run cycles, with cargoes booked about one-and-a-half to two months ahead of loading. That planned-ahead pattern allows users to ensure they have enough on hand to meet their requirements. The pause will affect buying of Russia's Urals cargoes for October-loading, they added. While overall purchases of October-loading Urals by India's refiners are unlikely to drop to zero, a dip could prompt a rush for other grades, with US, Middle Eastern and African cargoes as alternatives, said traders, who buy and sell across the region. Discussions for October cargoes have not yet started, though traders foresee deeper Russian discounts and more offers to China, which doesn't typically take much of the variety. In late-July, purchases of September-loading Urals concluded with India taking fewer barrels due to pricey offers. Since then, state-owned refiners have issued a slew of tenders, soaking up spot cargoes from other regions. Private processors Reliance Industries Ltd. and Nayara Energy Ltd., meanwhile, have been quiet, with the latter grappling with a steep drop in run rates following sanctions imposed by the European Union. Cargoes of Urals — Russia's benchmark crude grade from the west of the country — for August- and September-loading are likely to be delivered as planned, unless New Delhi advises otherwise, the people said. In recent days, tankers have offloaded some cargoes at Indian ports, albeit with some slight delays. At its peak, India imported more than 2 million barrels a day of Russian oil, up from almost zero purchases before the Ukraine war. 'There would be some operational disruptions for a period, but the crude supply-demand would balance out,' said R. Ramachandran, former director of refineries at Bharat Petroleum. If Russian supplies are more difficult, 'Middle East crudes — with the geographical advantages and a wide range of quality will be a prime substitute, especially from Saudi and Iraq,' he said. --With assistance from Sudhi Ranjan Sen, Lucia Kassai and Alex Longley.

Assam to drop cases of pre-2015 non-Muslim illegal immigrants from Foreigners Tribunals

Top officials held a video conference on July 17 to discuss a host of issues, including those 'related to the Foreigners Tribunal with reference to Citizenship Amendment Act' and issued the directive accordingly. According to a directive signed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political) Ajay Tewari on July 22, all district commissioners and senior superintendents of police have been asked to review the status of foreigners like Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Rohingyas. Guwahati, Aug 7 (PTI) The Assam government has instructed all districts to drop ongoing cases of suspected non-Muslim illegal foreigners entering the state before 2015 from the Foreigners Tribunals, following implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. However, it has not been made public yet. 'As per the amendments made to the Citizenship Act, the FTs are not supposed to pursue cases of foreigners belonging to the six specified communities (Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi and Jain communities), who had entered Assam on or prior to 31.12.2014. 'It was suggested to drop all such cases. In this regard, the district commissioner and the Senior SPs should immediately convey a meeting with their respective FT members, and also review the developments periodically and submit the action taken report to this department,' said the minutes of the meeting, which were sent to the districts. It also suggested that all such foreigners should be encouraged and supported for applying for Indian citizenship, as per provision of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. 'The Govt of Assam had issued clear cut instructions for withdrawal of all cases filed against people belonging to the Gorkha and Koch Rajbongshi communities. This should be complied with forthwith,' it said. As per legal provisions, only FTs can declare a person a foreigner in Assam, and subsequently higher courts can be approached if the verdict is not favourable. In July last year, the Assam government had asked its Border Police wing not to forward the cases of non-Muslim illegal immigrants entering the state before 2015 to Foreigners Tribunals, and instead, advised them to apply for citizenship through CAA. The Centre had in July, 2024 implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules four years after the law was passed by Parliament to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014. According to the Assam Accord, names of all foreigners coming to the state on or after March 25, 1971 would be detected and deleted from electoral rolls and steps would be taken to deport them. In a majority verdict, the Supreme Court on October 17 last year upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which grants Indian citizenship to immigrants who came to Assam between January 1, 1966 and March 25, 1971. SAD rebels decide agenda for Aug 11 meeting to elect chief of new faction, its name

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal rebels, under a five-member committee, held an over three-hour long meeting here Thursday to deliberate on the modalities and agenda for the Aug 11 meeting to elect the president of the new faction of Akali Dal. A SAD leader, who was present in the meeting, said, "Discussions were also held to choose an alternative venue for the meeting in Amritsar, in case the five-member panel does not get SGPC's permission to do so at Teja Singh Samnundri Hall, for which it has already approached the SGPC." Revealing that discussions were also held regarding the name of the new faction, the leader said, "It could be named simply Akali Dal, or a suffix or prefix could be added to Shiromani Akali Dal to register it as a new party with the Election Commission." SAD's rebel faction issued a statement after the meeting stating, "In this meeting, the entire leadership demonstrated unity and solidarity, working collectively for the greater good of the Panth and Punjab. Over the course of approximately three hours, the agenda for the Panth and Punjab's general session on Aug 11 was thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, it was decided to gather insights and opinions from state delegates over the next two days to inform the development of more effective policies and programs for the Panth and Punjab as part of our future strategy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like M3M Great Freedom Sale – Mega Sales for Luxury Homes M3M India Book Now Undo " It added, "The meeting highlighted that the unnecessary interference of politics in religion has significantly undermined the authority of Panthic institutions in the past, causing considerable losses due to decisions made in response to this interference. Consequently, the entire leadership has resolved that the new strategy to be formulated will firmly uphold the principle of Miri Piri and ensure its protection. A strong balance between religion and politics will be maintained at all times." Gurpartap Singh Wadala, one of the five members of the panel, said on the phone, "Apart from the election of the party president, the meeting will also focus on the challenges Punjab is facing and issues concerning farming and other areas. On the religious front, the agenda will focus on making the Sikh religious bodies autonomous and preventing their misuse." On SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal citing Akal Takht resolution to make an appeal to the rebels to return to the party fold, Wadala said, "It is just political posturing. If he is sincere about the revival of the party, he should step down as president." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
