LG Electronics expects best-ever Q1 revenue on B2B, subscription growth

LG Electronics said Monday it expects to post record-high first-quarter revenue, topping 22 trillion won for the first time, driven by growth in business-to-business operations and home appliance subscription services.
The South Korean tech giant estimated that its revenue for the January-March period increased 7.8 percent on-year to 22.74 trillion won ($15.5 billion), according to its earnings guidance, breaking 22 trillion won for the first time in any first quarter.
Despite its record revenue, the company's operating profit dropped 5.7 percent from a year earlier to 1.25 trillion won in the first quarter.
LG's result was largely in line with market expectations of 22.07 trillion won revenue and 1.26 trillion won operating profit projected by financial data firm FnGuide.
The company said it will release its full financial results end of this month, which includes net earnings and performance breakdowns by business division.
LG credited to best-ever Q1 revenue to stable growth in its core business, including home appliances, and in new sectors.
'Despite the continued uncertainty in the business environment, such as the economic downturn, we achieved stable growth in our existing core business, as well as qualitative growth in areas such as B2B, subscriptions, webOS-based services and direct-to-consumer business,' LG said in a statement.
Although segment-specific numbers were not disclosed, LG said it saw a significant improvement in its heating, ventilation and air conditioning division, a key part in LG's B2B sector. The unit's January-March result is expected to surpass last year's Q1 performance of 2.59 trillion won in revenue and 335.6 billion won in operating profit, the company said.
LG has been aiming to expand its commercial HVAC business across Southeast Asia. The company recently supplied its high-efficient HVAC solution to a massive logistics center in Singapore.
The company has also ramped up efforts to supply large-scale cooling systems, called chillers, for AI data centers. LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan recently met with Microsoft Chairman Satya Nadella during his visit in Seoul, where they agreed on supplying LG's chillers to Microsoft's data centers.
Meanwhile, LG's flagship home appliance division also performed strongly, driven by growth in premium products, according to the firm.
The company also noted that LG's expansion in subscription services attributed to sales growth. Last year, LG achieved a 2 trillion won revenue in its subscription service, making up about 20 percent of the company's revenue. LG plans to introduce these subscription services to new markets this year, including India, Singapore and Hong Kong, in addition to its existing markets of Thailand, Malaysia and Taiwan.

A South Korean court has ruled that an inheritance agreement signed by a man recovering from heart surgery is invalid, saying it was signed under coercion from his children. The contract also stated that if the father was found hiding "even 1 won" of assets, he must transfer them within a week. The defendant, a wealthy businessman and company founder, had already passed on assets worth 1.6 billion won (about $11.6 million) to his children by 2022. After his wife's death, he lived in the apartment with his girlfriend. The plaintiffs argued that the couple should not be living in a property still partly under their late mother's name and demanded ownership. The apartment was sold for 2.9 billion won. Of that, 1.8 billion won was used by the father to purchase a new unit in a commercial-residential building, which he legally designated to his grandchildren. However, his children sued him, demanding the entire 2.9 billion won. The court ruled that the contract is void, citing clear evidence of coercion. It noted that the man signed the agreement just 12 hours after having heart surgery, at 1 a.m., while still in poor physical condition. "It appears the plaintiffs pressured their father into signing the agreement while he was unwell. Given the circumstances and terms, the contract violates 'good morals and social order,'" the court said, citing Article 103 of the Civil Act, which nullifies acts contrary to public morality. The court added that the children's behavior — such as checking their father's finances, including any hidden assets, through his company employee — was 'abnormal and emotionally damaging,' and likely impaired his judgment.

Some family members of South Korean conglomerates have received large dividends from unlisted affiliates, despite a broader economic slowdown driven by political instability and concerns over US tariffs, financial data showed Sunday. According to audit reports posted on the electronic disclosure system by the Financial Supervisory Service, Samyang International Co., an unlisted affiliate of GS Group engaged in golf and tobacco retail, paid out a total of 10 billion won ($7.25 million) in dividends over the past year. The dividend payout exceeded the firm's annual net profit of 9.19 billion won. Of the 10 billion won, an estimated 8.2 billion won is believed to have gone to three members of the GS Group founding family, including Huh Joon-hong, the company's largest shareholder and heir apparent of the conglomerate. Huh and his relatives have also received dividends worth a combined 13.2 billion won from two other unlisted affiliates, including Samjoung Development Co. Meanwhile, K Cube Holdings Co., a company wholly owned by Kakao Corp. founder Kim Beom-su, has decided to pay out 15 billion won in dividends despite a net loss of 3.35 billion won last year. Gwangyoung Construction Co., an unlisted affiliate of real estate giant Booyoung Group, recently distributed 16.3 billion won to Chairman Lee Joong-keun and 3.2 billion won to his eldest son, Lee Sung-hoon, even though the company's net profit stood at just 14.7 billion won last year. Experts noted that the government should tight regulations on corporate governance and the oversight role of boards at unlisted firms. "Financial sanctions should be strengthened for suspicious transactions between listed and unlisted companies," said Lee Hyo-seob, a researcher at the Korea Capital Market Institute. Unusual US-China link-up may challenge LG's early lead in American ESS market Tesla dropped a bombshell by recently sharing a video clip on X showing drone footage of its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell manufacturing facility for energy storage systems in the US state of Nevada. While the electric vehicle giant is known for pioneering cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells for cars, Tesla's venture into LFP cells sends a warning signal to Korean battery manufacturers, as it potentially enables the Chinese battery giant CATL to indirectly enter the US market despite trade barriers against China. Rare US-China tie-up According to Bloomberg, Tesla — already using CATL's LFP cells in its 'Megapack' product for utility- and grid-level ESS, manufactured outside the US — will utilize equipment and battery design from CATL at its Nevada facility. 'Tesla's completion of its LFP cell factory will effectively be equivalent to an indirect entry of CATL into the US market,' said Park Cheol-wan, a car engineering professor at Seojeong University. 'Tesla sources LFP batteries for energy storage and electric vehicles from CATL and BYD, with BYD's long cells serving Europe and CATL's prismatic cells targeting Asia and North America,' Park added. 'With increased US sanctions on China under the Biden administration, Tesla planned to start local production at its Nevada factory. This strategy has shown unexpected foresight, especially in light of the tariffs imposed during Donald Trump's presidency.' Park noted that CATL's entry through Tesla differs from its 'de facto failed attempt' to build a joint battery manufacturing plant with Ford Motor Company, which involved licensing its battery technology. With Tesla having full control over the Nevada factory, CATL can still benefit financially from supplying equipment, thereby deepening its reach into an otherwise 'impenetrable' US market. Fresh threat to LG? Tesla and CATL's LFP battery production intensifies pressure on LG Energy Solution, which last month became the first among US-based players to begin mass production of LFP cells for ESS at its Michigan plant. An LG Energy Solution official noted that the company is now supplying long-cell-based LFP battery pack products to major US energy solution providers, including Terra-Gen and Delta Electronics. The combined annual supply volume to these two firms is projected to reach 12 gigawatt-hours, valued at approximately 3 trillion won ($2.2 billion). In 2022, LG Energy Solution also entered the ESS system integration sector, moving beyond battery supply to the construction and operation of large-scale ESS in North America. 'Although this move strengthens their market position, we'll need to wait and see whether they can maintain price competitiveness against Tesla, which is collaborating with the cost-efficient CATL,' Park said. While Tesla does not disclose its exact market share in the US ESS sector, it is known to be a dominant player in residential ESS and a key supplier for utility-scale storage. In 2024, the combined energy storage capacity of Tesla's Megapack and Powerwall products soared 114 percent year-on-year to 31.4 gigawatt-hours. The company projects at least 50 percent growth in this segment for 2025. No clear leader Industry watchers expect the LFP battery rivalry between LG Energy Solution and Tesla — backed by CATL — to expand into the US electric vehicle market. 'While Tesla has so far only revealed plans for ESS production at its Nevada plant, it seems only a matter of time before it begins manufacturing LFP cells for EVs as well, given that these products use the same battery design,' said a researcher at a major Korean battery company. Park also noted that Tesla's local production of LFP cells is likely to spur LG Energy Solution — which is set to begin large-scale LFP battery supplies to Renault Group from its plant in Poland — to explore new partnerships with legacy US automakers such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors. In the first quarter of this year, GM's brands — Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC — ranked second in US EV sales with 31,886 units, following Tesla's 128,100 units, according to data from Cox Automotive. Ford came in third with 22,500 units sold.
