Security guard killed in botched cash-in-transit

The Citizen10-05-2025
A 49-year-old security guard was shot and killed during a failed cash-in-transit robbery near Mandeni just before 9am this morning.
The robbers reportedly failed to gain access to the majority of the money after their explosives did not work as planned in a brazen daytime heist which closed part of the N2 for hours.
According to IPSS Security operations manager, Phumlani Vezi, two other guards at the scene were not injured but were robbed of their firearms.
The incident marks at least the sixth cash-in-transit heist between KwaDukuza and Mandeni in the past year.
Last month, a 50-year-old security guard was shot in the leg and his 46-year-old colleague was assaulted in a cash-in-transit heist on the R74 near KwaDukuza.
Just three days earlier, robbers targeted a vehicle on the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu, escaping with an undisclosed amount of money.
Later in the day, in an unrelated accident, a father and his 8-year-old son tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision on the R102.
They were travelling with their family when the accident happened near the KwaDukuza police station at around 4pm.
'Another five family members were injured, including three children aged between 8 and 13. One patient was severely entrapped in the wreckage and required urgent assistance,' said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.
The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital by private transport while the passenger picked up minor injuries and declined further treatment.

Fast-tracking Cornubia housing for flood victims

The building of 113 houses in Cornubia, Durban, allocated for the victims of the 2022 and 2025 floods, will reach completion over the next four months. Premier Thamasanqa Ntuli made this commitment on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Government yesterday (14 August) during a site visit to the Cornubia Housing Development. The Cornubia Housing Development is part of a broader plan by the KZN provincial department to build 1200 houses by 2027 for families who were displaced following the 2022 and 2025 floods in Durban. Presently, displaced families reside in community halls and temporary residential units. 'The construction of these 113 houses within four months is a promise in action. By 2027, we want every flood victim in KwaZulu-Natal to live in a safe, permanent home,' said Ntuli. The province announced the allocation of R149 million for a further 692 houses that form part of this development. 'The 692 houses are scheduled for completion by December 2026, with beneficiaries expected to move in from December 2026 to January 2027,' said Ntuli. The Premier indicated social facilitation programmes would be initiated by the province together with local municipalities to engage with communities resistant to such developments in their midst. Beneficiaries of houses under government housing projects were warned not to resell or rent out their homes to non-beneficiaries. Ntuli said such actions are unlawful and anybody committing such offences will be prosecuted. 'The Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will take strict legal action against offenders to protect the integrity of the resettlement programme and ensure that the rightful beneficiaries are accommodated,' said Ntuli. The Cornubia Housing Development is regarded as 'the most ambitious' post-disaster recovery initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal's history. The 2022 group of displaced flood victims were reported to have accused the government of not fulfilling their housing promises, in recent years. Three BOMBSHELLS from 'Real Housewives of Durban' star's TELL-ALL

Former Real Housewives of Durban star Annie Mthembu sat down with podcaster Lungelo KM to speak about the emotional toll that her split from Durban businessman Kgolo Mthembu took on her on an episode of Engineer Your Life, which released this week. Reality star and businesswoman Annie Mthembu married Durban businessman Kgolo 'Daguru' Mthembu in a lavish wedding at La Paris Estate in Franschhoek in the Western Cape in 2021. The pair met in 2016 and have a pair of Irish twins together. In her tell-all podcast with Lungelo KM, she revealed that her marriage ended due to infidelity. She expressed that admitting that she was cheated on made her feel as though she was not good enough. 'No one likes being cheated on. It makes you question yourself a lot,' she said. 'Admitting I was being cheated on felt like saying I wasn't good enough. People told me things – some true, some not. When you don't know what to believe, you start losing your mind. I was highly embarrassed. I wasn't in a good place,' she continued. Annie expressed that she tried to fix her marriage because she wanted to protect her family. 'I just wanted to protect all of us, even though I wasn't being protected. Everybody knew things I didn't. Still, I wanted to protect myself, my children, and our family. Even though I knew he was doing his thing, I still wanted us to be a family,' she said. To the shock of many, Annie expressed that she and Kgolo have split for almost three years now. This means the pair split in December 2022. She expressed that she still wants to forgive the father of her two children. 'I am still fighting the unforgiveness. They say time heals – I'm waiting for time to do its job,' she added. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Durban aircraft crash: Police provide update on missing pilot

KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that the search for the missing pilot whose light aircraft crashed in Durban will resume on Friday morning. The light aircraft crashed into the sea at the Suncoast Beach in Durban on Thursday afternoon, 14 August. The pilot was the only one on board during the incident. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KZN, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, stated that the 61-year-old pilot was part of an air show and was in the air demonstrating his skills when the aircraft crashed. 'The Police Search and Rescue team, working together with their private counterparts have recovered some wreckage of the aircraft and the search for the pilot is ongoing,' he said on Thursday afternoon. The search was later called off and is set to resume on Friday morning. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
