Radio 2 loses nearly half a million listeners since weekday relaunch

The BBC station had an estimated weekly audience of 12.62 million across April to June of this year, down from 13.11 million in the previous three months.
It is the lowest total for Radio 2 since the current method of measuring listeners was introduced by research body Rajar in autumn 2021, following a break during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The figures are the first full set of quarterly data since Radio 2 overhauled its weekday schedule at the end of January 2025.
Along with Mills taking over the breakfast programme, the shake-up saw Trevor Nelson begin a new afternoon show and DJ Spoony present a late evening slot on Mondays to Thursdays.
Zoe Ball bowed out as presenter on December 20 2024, after nearly six years in the role, with Gaby Roslin and Mark Goodier filling in during January until Mills began.
The Radio 2 breakfast show had an average weekly audience of 6.22 million in the three months to June, down from 6.45 million in January to March – again, the lowest figure since the pandemic.
Despite the dip in listeners, the slot continues to enjoy the largest audience on national radio at that time of the day, ahead of Radio 4's Today programme, which had an average audience of 5.64 million in the latest period, as well as the breakfast shows on Radio 1 (3.86 million) and commercial broadcaster Greatest Hits (3.24 million).
The audience for the Today programme is down very slightly from 5.70 million in the previous three months, but up from 5.47 million in the equivalent period a year ago.
The latest Rajar figures also show that:
– Radio 3's breakfast programme has lost a fifth of its listeners, down from 798,000 in January-March to 639,000 in April-June: a period that coincided with the departure of long-term host Petroc Trelawny and his replacement from April 7 by Tom McKinney.
– Radio 4 had an average weekly audience of 9.23 million in the latest quarter, down slightly from 9.33 million in the previous three months but up from 8.98 million a year earlier.
– Radio 5 Live saw a jump in listeners both on the previous quarter (up 3%) and year on year (also up 3%), with an average audience of 5.51 million in April-June.
– Radio 1's average weekly audience of 7.48 million is up slightly on the quarter by 1%, but down 8% year on year.
Radio 2's weekly audience has now fallen by nearly two million in three years, down from an average of 14.53 million listeners in April-June 2022 to the latest figure of 12.62 million, though it remains comfortably the UK's most popular radio station.
This period has seen a number of veteran DJs disappear from the Radio 2 airwaves, such as Ken Bruce, who left to join Greatest Hits in March 2023; Steve Wright, who died in February 2024; and Johnnie Walker, who died in December 2024.
Helen Thomas, head of Radio 2, said: 'I'm hugely proud that in a quarter where Radio 2 shone a light on Eurovision, celebrated Elaine Paige's 60 years in showbusiness, launched the RHS Radio 2 Dog Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, and presented a VE Day 80 concert, Radio 2 firmly remains the UK's most listened to single radio station.
'Congratulations to Scott Mills, whose Breakfast Show remains the number one breakfast show in the country, and Vernon Kay, whose weekday mid-morning show continues to be the most listened to programme on UK radio, with a weekly audience of 6.6 million.'
Mohit Bakaya, director of speech and controller of Radio 4, said: 'I'm delighted to see Radio 4 and 5 Live continue to deliver for audiences with increased listening figures year on year.
'BBC Radio remains the number one UK radio brand and listeners continue to turn to us for trusted news and analysis, as well as the big sporting moments in the national calendar.'
BBC stations accounted for 42.1% of all the time people spent listening to the radio in the UK in the latest quarter, a bigger percentage share than any other brand, although the figure is down from 43.1% in the previous three months.
Three years ago the BBC's share stood at 48.1%.
Elsewhere, the commercial network Greatest Hits saw a drop in listeners for the fifth quarter in a row, though its average audience of 6.66 million is still higher than two years ago, when it stood at 5.79 million.
Among the smaller news-based stations, Times Radio had an average of 616,000 listeners across the three months to June, its second highest numbers since launching in 2020, down 1% on the previous quarter but a jump of 29% on the year.
GB News averaged 547,000 listeners in the latest quarter, down 2% on the previous three months but up 6% year on year, while Talk – formerly Talk Radio – had an average of 487,000 listeners, up very slightly by 0.4% on the quarter but down 29% on the year.

Rylan Clark's 'mugging' by surprise assailant leads to awkward call to police

Rylan Clark has detailed the hilarious moment he was "mugged" by an unusual thief while walking back to a friend's house in Romford, forcing him to make an awkward phone call to the police Rylan Clark has shared a hilarious anecdote about the time he was "mugged by a fox", which led to an awkward phone call with the police. The amusing tale unfolded during his Radio 2 show, Rylan On Saturday, after a colleague recounted her own encounter with a squirrel. ‌ The former X Factor contestant and Eurovision star revealed that he had been "mugged by a fox" while walking back from Romford to a friend's house. In a conversation on air, he described how he had spotted the fox on a wall while he was holding his wallet in his hand. ‌ He recalled: "And, as I thought I've seen this fox. You know, normally, you just like stamp your foot on the floor and the fox will run away? Getcha! So, I stamped me foot, and this fox really like nonchalantly crawled down the wall looking at me, walked towards me. ‌ "And I'd obviously had a couple of drinks - I'm thinking, 'Oh, this ain't happening'. Well, it pounced. I've jumped, dropped me wallet, it's got it in its mouth and gone up the road, took my wallet!" After the bizarre incident, Rylan then had to report the theft to his card company. However, they required a crime reference number since he had reported his card as stolen. ‌ Yet, in a comical twist, he then had to call the police to report his unusual mugging. When asked why he needed a crime reference number, he explained that he had been "mugged", leading to further questions about the identity of the perpetrator. He responded: "I was like, 'Oh, a fox', and I could just hear them all laughing. They were like, 'Could you describe them?' I was like, 'Bushy, ginger'. Yeah, I still got the crime reference number." Meanwhile, the beloved broadcaster recently branded his mum, Linda, a "walking disaster" during a live show after she revealed how she'd hurt her arms whilst at home. ‌ During a telephone chat live on his programme, Linda explained to the audience that she'd been "looking in the ottoman" when the "lid came down", with Rylan noting that she'd cut her arm in the process. "Oh it did hurt", Linda replied, before saying: "If it ain't one thing it's another, isn't it?" In response, Rylan said: "That's why you're like a walking disaster at the moment," to which Linda agreed. However, just weeks earlier, Rylan had disclosed that Linda wouldn't feature on his programme as she'd been rushed to hospital. He informed his followers on Instagram that "Mummy Linda isn't well sadly". He subsequently praised the emergency staff at Princess Alexandra Hospital whilst reassuring supporters that he would provide updates and that his mum is "on the mend" and a "trooper".

Strictly's Stacey Dooley warns 'they'll take me from you' after daughter drama

The former Glitterball Trophy champion was in London with her husband to promote their new play, but the couple's day got off to a chaotic start Stacey Dooley was forced to deliver an ultimatum to her daughter Minnie following "a couple of meltdowns" from the two-year-old before heading into London promote her West End play. The former Strictly Come Dancing winner and her partner Kevin Clifton, who first met after claiming the Glitterball Trophy in 2018, were scheduled to feature on Zoe Ball's BBC Radio 2 programme over the weekend to discuss their nationwide tour of 2:22: A Ghost Story. ‌ Unfortunately, the day got off to a rocky start with Zoe informing her audience that her guests had endured "a dramatic morning", resulting in "lots of people running around" backstage attempting to sort out the chaos before broadcast. ‌ As she introduced the pair to her show, Zoe revealed: "I am thrilled to say that they've just about made it. But it's been a dramatic morning for our guests today, an awful lot has happened, but they're here now, it's Dooley and Clifton!" ‌ After being introduced into the show, Stacey spoke frankly about the chaos the family of three had experienced in their rush to reach Broadcasting House. The documentary maker confessed: "I've just been painfully predictable this morning." The trouble began when Minnie refused to take a shower, with Stacey admitting she was forced to give her daughter an ultimatum, as her face was smeared with food. She said: "We've had a couple of meltdowns at about 8 o'clock this morning, which was really fun, and then we didn't want to shower, 'I don't want a morning shower', and I said, 'You've got ravioli around your face, baby! They'll take me off you!'" ‌ The excitement continued as Stacey, Kevin and Minnie reached the Radio 2 studios, where she "got stuck" while attempting to reach Zoe's radio studio. Stacey went on: "And then I got stuck in the stair lift, and your amazing producer came to save me," prompting Zoe to tell Kevin: "There was lots of people running around past the glass Kev, and I was like, 'What's going down?'" Kevin shared his perspective, saying: "They were all looking for Stacey's phone because she lost her phone downstairs, and, as we know, Stace will not get in a lift and we're, like, on the top floor of the building here. ‌ "So they had to find some secret passage to get Stacey up the stairs. It's been a real journey to get here." Stacey playfully interrupted with a quip: "I'm no hassle! I'm no hassle," leading Zoe to jest: "You knew this when you got involved, Kev! You knew what you were getting involved in!" Kevin chuckled and concluded: "Yeah, I've got these two manic redheads who are making my life really dramatic!" 2:22 – A Ghost Story is set to be the first project that reunites Stacey and Kevin since their dazzling days on Strictly, as they step into the characters of Jenny and Sam in this spine-chilling play, reports Wales Online. He took to Instagram to announce their collaboration with a snap of the duo, captioning it: "Day 1 back working with this little fella again. Last time was 7 years ago @sjdooley @222aghoststory."
