Chennai: He made multiple flight trips, used fake Aadhaar IDs, and risked gold worth 1 crore by leaving it unattended in a flight for two days. However, the smuggler from Chennai was outsmarted by customs sleuths at the city airport.
They arrested him and seized a little more than 2 kg of 24-carat gold.
Sleuths secured the flyer on June 14 at the domestic terminal when he arrived from Kolkata. As much as 1.13 kg of gold in paste form was seized from him. However, investigation revealed that he originally smuggled the gold from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai and attempted to bring it to Chennai via a domestic route to avoid suspicion.
Customs sources said the smuggler carried gold in paste form from Abu Dhabi on June 12 and stuck the gold under the seat he travelled in.
He exited the Mumbai airport without the gold and flew to Chennai. While tracking the flight using its unique number, he found out that the same aircraft was flying to Chennai from Kolkata on June 14.
"So, he flew from Chennai to Kolkata and flew back on the Indigo flight in the same seat where he stuck the gold underneath. He retrieved the gold, which remained intact, and tried to exit Chennai airport," said sources. During further investigation, customs sleuths discovered that he changed his identity by booking tickets in a different name using a fake Aadhaar card.

Two fake Aadhaar cards and another 898 grams of gold in possession were also seized from him.
In total, gold worth more than 2 crore was seized from him.
The sleuths suspect that the arrested man might have smuggled gold in the same way in the past.
In another incident, customs sleuths arrested a man who smuggled gold from Kuala Lumpur by replacing the regular screws in his trolley with ones made of gold. The passenger was secured on suspicion on June 15, and his check-in baggage was searched. Since the screws in his baggage seemed different, they were removed. The officials found that the screws were pure gold coated in grey to make them look like regular screws made of aluminium.
As many as 99 screws weighing about 900 grams were seized from the flyer, and he was arrested.

Supreme Court slams TN for suspending ADGP, says it's demoralising

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday disapproved of Tamil Nadu govt's decision to suspend additional director general of police (ADGP) H M Jayaram after Madras HC ordered his arrest in an abduction case and asked it to inform the court within 24 hours "why the suspension be not withdrawn". When Jayaram's counsel Aditya K Choudhary said the IPS officer had an unblemished 28-year service record and that he was not involved in the abduction case, a partial working day bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan asked TN govt's counsel, "why have you suspended him? He is a senior police officer, and he has joined the investigation. Such suspension orders are very demoralising". TN govt counsel Misha R Mohta informed the court that Jayaram had not been arrested and was released after questioning. However, he was placed under suspension, she accepted, asking the court for time to obtain instructions from state govt on whether the suspension order, issued following the HC's directive, would be withdrawn. Jayaram has been accused of aiding and abetting the kidnapping of a 19-year-old youth, whose brother had married a woman without the approval of her family members. When the couple eloped and could not be traced, the police allegedly kidnapped the youth, transported him in Jayaram's vehicle and tortured him to reveal the couple's whereabouts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On Monday, Justice P Velmurugan of Madras HC directed the police to arrest Jayaram, saying "a strong message should go to public that no one is above law". The high court denied the MLA relief and ordered him to cooperate with the investigators probing the case.

In-laws told to provide woman accommodation or pay her rent

New Delhi: Directing the in-laws of a woman to either arrange accommodation for her or pay the rent for her separate stay, a court has observed that an aggrieved person under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act has the right to reside in the shared household even in the absence of actual residence in it. Citing a Supreme Court ruling, the court of additional sessions judge Sharad Gupta said in his June 6 order that a woman couldn't be excluded from the shared household even if she didn't actually reside there. The petitioner, Shalini Chauhan, alleged that after her marriage in 2021 in Faridabad, she was subjected to domestic violence, following which she decided to live separately. The court was hearing her appeal against an order of a magisterial court in Sept 2023, which did not issue directions on the issue of accommodation. Vineet Chauhan, her husband who is absconding, didn't give interim maintenance to her since Jan 2023. The appellant, through her advocate Archana Sharma, said she was facing financial difficulties as her husband had filed a plea claiming he wasn't involved in any violence and not liable to pay maintenance. The judge directed the father and brother of the husband to either permit the woman to reside in the matrimonial home or arrange a separate rented premises and pay Rs 7,000 per month for rent for six months from the date of the order or until the final disposal of the complaint of the appellant under PWDV Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The court observed that there was nothing on record to suggest that the relationship between the husband and his family members was peaceful or that he was colluding with them. "Rather, as per record, the respondent no. 1 has abandoned his parents as well as his wife. Thus, considering that the appellant was living in the matrimonial home prior to the breakdown of relationships, the respondents would have to provide some shelter or rent to the appellant for a reasonable period of time," the judge said.
