Man boards same flight twice to take hidden gold; held
Chennai: He made multiple flight trips, used fake Aadhaar IDs, and risked gold worth 1 crore by leaving it unattended in a flight for two days. However, the smuggler from Chennai was outsmarted by customs sleuths at the city airport.
They arrested him and seized a little more than 2 kg of 24-carat gold.
Sleuths secured the flyer on June 14 at the domestic terminal when he arrived from Kolkata. As much as 1.13 kg of gold in paste form was seized from him. However, investigation revealed that he originally smuggled the gold from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai and attempted to bring it to Chennai via a domestic route to avoid suspicion.
Customs sources said the smuggler carried gold in paste form from Abu Dhabi on June 12 and stuck the gold under the seat he travelled in.
He exited the Mumbai airport without the gold and flew to Chennai. While tracking the flight using its unique number, he found out that the same aircraft was flying to Chennai from Kolkata on June 14.
"So, he flew from Chennai to Kolkata and flew back on the Indigo flight in the same seat where he stuck the gold underneath. He retrieved the gold, which remained intact, and tried to exit Chennai airport," said sources. During further investigation, customs sleuths discovered that he changed his identity by booking tickets in a different name using a fake Aadhaar card.

In another incident, customs sleuths arrested a man who smuggled gold from Kuala Lumpur by replacing the regular screws in his trolley with ones made of gold. The passenger was secured on suspicion on June 15, and his check-in baggage was searched. Since the screws in his baggage seemed different, they were removed. The officials found that the screws were pure gold coated in grey to make them look like regular screws made of aluminium.
As many as 99 screws weighing about 900 grams were seized from the flyer, and he was arrested.

New Delhi: Directing the in-laws of a woman to either arrange accommodation for her or pay the rent for her separate stay, a court has observed that an aggrieved person under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act has the right to reside in the shared household even in the absence of actual residence in it. Citing a Supreme Court ruling, the court of additional sessions judge Sharad Gupta said in his June 6 order that a woman couldn't be excluded from the shared household even if she didn't actually reside there. The petitioner, Shalini Chauhan, alleged that after her marriage in 2021 in Faridabad, she was subjected to domestic violence, following which she decided to live separately. The court was hearing her appeal against an order of a magisterial court in Sept 2023, which did not issue directions on the issue of accommodation. Vineet Chauhan, her husband who is absconding, didn't give interim maintenance to her since Jan 2023. The appellant, through her advocate Archana Sharma, said she was facing financial difficulties as her husband had filed a plea claiming he wasn't involved in any violence and not liable to pay maintenance. Agra: Three men, resting below a flyover after their routine morning walk, were crushed to death on Wednesday when a mango-laden loader plunged off the flyover on National Highway-19 in Agra's Trans Yamuna area and fell on them. The truck's driver later succumbed to injuries, while his helper remains in critical condition. ACP Hemant Kumar said, "The loader was en route from Lucknow to Agra's Sikandra area when it lost control while ascending the flyover. It veered off the edge and plunged from a height. Below the flyover, Rajesh (55), Rameshwar (60) and Haribabu (62), — all residents of Shahdara's Adarsh Gali — were sitting after their walk when the vehicle fell on them, killing them on the spot." He added, "The 22-year-old driver, Krishna, a resident of Bhamauli Katara police station area, and his helper Bhim (25), were rushed to SN Medical College.
