In-laws told to provide woman accommodation or pay her rent
Citing a Supreme Court ruling, the court of additional sessions judge Sharad Gupta said in his June 6 order that a woman couldn't be excluded from the shared household even if she didn't actually reside there.
The petitioner, Shalini Chauhan, alleged that after her marriage in 2021 in Faridabad, she was subjected to domestic violence, following which she decided to live separately. The court was hearing her appeal against an order of a magisterial court in Sept 2023, which did not issue directions on the issue of accommodation.
Vineet Chauhan, her husband who is absconding, didn't give interim maintenance to her since Jan 2023. The appellant, through her advocate Archana Sharma, said she was facing financial difficulties as her husband had filed a plea claiming he wasn't involved in any violence and not liable to pay maintenance.
The judge directed the father and brother of the husband to either permit the woman to reside in the matrimonial home or arrange a separate rented premises and pay Rs 7,000 per month for rent for six months from the date of the order or until the final disposal of the complaint of the appellant under PWDV Act.

The court observed that there was nothing on record to suggest that the relationship between the husband and his family members was peaceful or that he was colluding with them. "Rather, as per record, the respondent no. 1 has abandoned his parents as well as his wife. Thus, considering that the appellant was living in the matrimonial home prior to the breakdown of relationships, the respondents would have to provide some shelter or rent to the appellant for a reasonable period of time," the judge said.

Woman Poses As Man, Robs Jewellery Of Rs 1.5 Crore From Relative's House
Palghar: A 27-year-old woman disguised as a man to gain entry into the residence of her sister's father-in-law and robbed jewellery of more than Rs 1.5 crore from the house in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place at Manickpur in Vasai area on Monday afternoon and the woman was apprehended from Navsari in Gujarat the same night, they said. The accused, dressed up as a man, came to the house of her sister's 66-year-old father-in-law, who lived alone, under the pretext of wanting to see it for some deal. After entering the house, the accused took the elderly man to the toilet on the pretext of checking it, locked him inside and fled with 1.4 kg of gold ornaments and 2.3 kg of silver items, collectively valued at Rs 1,50,84,050, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Madan Ballal said. Based on the victim's complaint, an FIR was registered the same day under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for theft, robbery and wrongful confinement, and the police examined 75 to 80 CCTV footages, he said. "We came across a footage showing a man carrying the stolen items and placing them somewhere before disappearing from sight, after which a woman collected them," the official said. Along with technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, the investigators received a tip that a relative of the victim in Gujarat could be involved in the crime. Acting swiftly, a crime branch team from here, with the assistance of the Navsari police, apprehended the woman, identified as Jyoti Mohan Bhanushali, from Gujarat late Monday night, Ballal said. "During interrogation, she confessed to hatching the plan herself. Disguised as a man, she visited the house of her sister's father-in-law, knowing he lived alone, and carried out the robbery," the official said. The police have recovered all the stolen items, he said, adding further probe was on into the case.

ED raids Karnataka Cong MLA, others in illegal iron ore export case
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 13 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday raided premises linked to Karnataka Congress MLA Satish Krishna Sail and some others as part of a money laundering investigation against the legislator in a case related to alleged illegal export of iron ore, official sources said. At least 15 premises in Karnataka, Goa and Mumbai are being searched under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Sail is a Congress MLA representing the Karwar assembly constituency in Uttara Kannada district. Sail, according to the sources, has been accused of exporting illegally mined iron ore which was seized by forest officials at Belekeri port in Karwar, Karnataka. This caused 'loss" to government exchequer for an amount of about Rs 38 crore but the actual value of illegally exported ore is worth hundreds of crores of rupees, the sources said. The case originated from a 2010 probe by the Karnataka Lokayukta, which discovered about eight lakh tons of illegally transported iron ore from Bellary to Belekeri port. The Karnataka High Court last year had ordered the suspension of the seven-year prison sentence of the MLA in this case. A special court had previously found Sail and others guilty in multiple cases related to the illegal export of iron ore from the Belekeri port.
