Five arrested for murder of woman in Dima Hasao, locals allege rape

Silchar: Police in Assam's Dima Hasao district arrested five men in connection with the alleged murder of a 48-year-old woman, whose body was recovered from a forested area on Friday. According to officials, the victim ran a tea stall, and she went missing after shutting her stall around 5 pm. Her body was later traced with the help of a mobile phone tracker. Preliminary examination revealed multiple injuries, including severe wounds on the head. In a breakthrough, police have arrested five men working in a hydro-electric project as suspects, SP (Dima Hasao) Mayank Kumar told TOI on Saturday. The body of the woman has been sent to Diphu Medical College and Hospital for autopsy, the SP informed. Earlier on Friday, SP Kumar, along with additional SP Luit Talukdar and additional SP (crime) Faruk Ahmed, visited the spot. "The incident is painful. The employers of the five men have been fully cooperating with the investigation," ASP Talukdar said. A case has been registered, and police said the exact cause of death will be established after the autopsy report is received. The incident triggered protests in the area on Friday, coinciding with Independence Day. Angry locals gathered in front of a police outpost, alleging that the victim had been gang-raped by five men before being murdered. They also demanded that work at the hydro-electric project be suspended until justice is delivered. Following assurances from senior police officials, the protests subsided, but work was halted at the project site. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Will fully cooperate for release of The Devil: Actor Darshan

Agency: PTI Bengaluru, Aug 16 (PTI) Kannada actor Darshan on Saturday said he would 'fully cooperate" for the release of his film 'The Devil'. He also expressed confidence that his 'celebrities" — as he calls his fans — will also stand by his decision. The message was conveyed through his wife Vijayalakshmi's Instagram account. Directed by Prakash Veer, the first song of the film was supposed to have been released on August 15. But with the Supreme Court cancelling his bail, Darshan was taken into custody a day before, on August 14. Following which, the plans for the film were reportedly put on hold. However, Darshan said his first duty is to support the directors who believed in him and the producers who have invested crores of money in him. 'So, I hope that all the work of my film 'The Devil' will proceed without any hindrance. I hereby inform you that you (makers of the film) have my full cooperation. And I firmly believe that my celebrities (fans) will consent to this," Darshan is quoted as saying in his wife's Instagram post. Darshan had wrapped up the film in July. The reshooting of the film started in February after the actor was released on regular bail. 'Cinema is an entertainment medium and should be viewed only from the perspective of entertainment," the actor said further through his wife's post. Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024, in connection with Renukaswamy murder case. Darshan was granted interim bail on medical grounds after he claimed back pain. He was then granted regular bail by the Karnataka High Court in mid-December. PTI JR ROH view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. On Instagram, Vijayalakshmi wrote on behalf of Thoogudeepa, 'My humble salutations to all Kannada art lovers and my dear fans. I am forever grateful for the love and affection you have shown me – for sharing in my happiness and standing as my strength during times of hardship. Wherever I may be, and however I may be, I always wish for your well-being.' A post shared by Vijayalakshmi darshan (@ 'Whatever the present circumstances may be, it is my foremost duty to stand by the directors who have trusted me with their dreams, and the producers who have invested crores of rupees in me. Therefore, it is my heartfelt desire that all work related to my film 'The Devil' should continue without any obstacles. I assure my full cooperation for the same, and I firmly believe that my fans will also agree with this,' the post reads. 'Cinema is a medium of entertainment, and it should always be viewed only from the perspective of entertainment,' it further states. On Thursday, Thoogudeepa and six others were arrested after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted by the Karnataka High Court. Thoogudeepa was earlier arrested on June 11 last year, along with Pavithra Gowda and 15 others, in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga. Renukaswamy was allegedly murdered for sending objectionable messages to Pavithra Gowda on Instagram. His body was discovered near a stormwater drain close to an apartment complex in Sumanahalli, Bengaluru, on June 9, 2024. Thoogudeepa was arrested while shooting for The Devil in Mysuru. He was released from prison on October 30 on interim bail after spending 131 days in jail. On December 13, the Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Thoogudeepa and Pavithra Gowda. The state government had approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail. The state government had challenged the bail petition and the Supreme Court denied him relief. According to a source, the movie is presently in the post-production stage and was scheduled to be released in October. On August 15, the filmmakers had planned to release the first song of the movie – Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek (If You Live, Live Peacefully). However, following the arrest of Thoogudeepa, the release was postponed.
