Ghaziabad jumps to 11th spot from 38, but poor segregation at source a worry
Interestingly, the city scored 100% under the cleanliness of residential and market areas categories, when current ground realities in different parts of the city paint quite a different picture, with sludge from drains and garbage lying in huge dumps in places like Indirapuram, Navyug Market, Kala Patthar, as well as Vaishali.
"On four parameters—remediation of dumpsites, cleanliness of residential areas, market areas, and water bodies—GMC areas scored 100%," said municipal health officer Mithilesh Kumar.
"It also performed well on door-to-door waste collection (98%), cleanliness of public toilets (97%), and waste processing (91%), but struggled with source segregation, scoring only 57% in this category."

The percentages reflect how a city has scored on multiple cleanliness and sanitation parameters of the survey under each category.
Despite several awareness campaigns, like registration of domestic helpers and training workshops aimed at promoting segregation at source, the impact has been limited.

"Domestic workers and hotel staffers were identified as key stakeholders for segregation of waste at source, but the desired behavioural shift hasn't happened yet," Kumar said.
GMC collects over 1,400 metric tons of waste daily, with each household producing an average of 350-400 gm waste, both dry and wet. To manage doorstep waste collection, the corporation has 313 CNG-powered vehicles with a capacity of 2.2 cubic metres each.
It also has a mobile app to alert residents before garbage collection. But these tech-based interventions have yet to resolve the segregation issue.
Still, the city's broader sanitation strategy appears to be paying off. "GMC has been certified as a garbage-free city, which is a big achievement," said mayor Sunita Dayal.
Municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik said that scientific disposal of around 15 lakh tons of legacy waste across sites in Morta, Bhikkanpur, Indirapuram and Pratap Vihar freed nearly 20 hectares of land, which were now being used for plantation drives.
GME also cleared 455 unauthorised garbage sites, he said.
Commissioning four new waste processing units — in Akbarpur Behrampur, Hindon Vihar, Sahibabad, and Rajendra Nagar — each capable of handling 150–200 tons per day, also helped the GMC improve its ranking.
The establishment of the Material Recovery Centres in Sihani and Ret Mandi also contributed to better waste sorting and processing.
Residents, however, claim that the survey rankings had nothing to do with ground realities.
"I can name at least 10 marketplaces in the city where garbage is scattered right now. GMC can pat its own back for scoring 100% marks for cleanliness of market areas in the Swachh survey, but for us, the ranking seems more of a political stunt. How does one explain tons of sludge on Kala Patthar Road near Indirapuram? Mind you, this is one of the city's most posh townships," VK Bhatnagar, a resident of Gaur Green City, told TOI.
For Ratnakar Pathak of Shastri Nagar, the rankings were just another kind of "number jugglery".
"It casts doubt over the mechanism used for the whole exercise. I have been living in Ghaziabad since 2002. While there is no denying that the overall situation has improved over the last 2 decades, I still find it hard to convince myself that of 4,000 cities in the country, Ghaziabad has been ranked 11th in cleanliness," Pathak said.
GMC, meanwhile, tried to deflect the criticism by pointing out that the Swachh survey for FY 2024-25 was completed in March.
"Sewage sludge on parts of the city accumulated over the last 20 days, when the survey is conducted for a specific period. Independent surveyors conduct on-spot surveys, and the GMC has no say in that," said a GMC official.

What is the new ChatGPT Agent that can ‘control' your computer?
ChatGPT Agent is OpenAI's latest Artificial Intelligence tool. The tech firm helmed by Sam Altman claims that ChatGPT Agent goes far beyond being a mere chatbot and uses its own virtual computer to 'think' and 'act'. ChatGPT Agent became available on Thursday (July 17) for subscribers of OpenAI's Pro, Plus, and Team plans. Here's what we know about it read more The software, known as ChatGPT Agent, can undertake a wide variety of computer-based tasks for users. OpenAI has launched a new software for ChatGPT. The software, known as ChatGPT Agent, can undertake a wide variety of computer-based tasks for users. ChatGPT Agent became available on Thursday for subscribers of OpenAI's Pro, Plus, and Team plans. Users simply have to choose 'agent mode' in ChatGPT's dropdown menu to activate it. But what is it? What do we know about it? How does it work? Why is it significant? What is it? OpenAI, which is helmed by Sam Altman, claims that ChatGPT Agent goes far beyond being a mere chatbot. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The company says that ChatGPT Agent uses its own virtual computer to 'think' and 'act'. It essentially functions like a personal assistant to which you can delegate tasks. This includes executing code, going to websites, managing your calendar, making meal plans, creating presentations and spreadsheets, and summarising meetings. The company says users can interact with ChatGPT Agent in a 'natural language'. The company in its blog said users can issue commands such as 'look at my calendar and brief me on upcoming client meetings based on recent news' or 'plan and buy ingredients to make Japanese breakfast for four'. ChatGPT Pro subscribers will be allowed 400 queries per month. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Team/Plus users will receive 40 queries per month. Distressing news and traumatic stories can cause stress and ChatGPT Agent uses its own virtual computer to 'think' and 'act'. It will available to ChatGPT Enterprise and Education users later this year. Interestingly, the brains behind ChatGPT agent is an Indian. He is currently in charge of the team behind ChatGPT Agent, Kumar and Isa Fulford, the research lead on ChatGPT Agent, unveiled the software in a demonstration with The Verge. Kumar and Fulford in the demonstration asked ChatGPT Agent to plan a date night for a couple. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD They also requested that ChatGPT Agent write a research report on Labubus and compare their ascendancy with Beanie Babies. This includes the web browser tool Operator and Deep Research, an analysis tool which can take information from different websites and write a research report. Open AI had described Operator as 'an agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you'. The model behind ChatGPT Agent, which does not have a name, was trained through reinforcement learning – which is the standard technique for all OpenAI's reasoning models. OpenAI says the model delivers state-of-the-art performance on several benchmarks, according to OpenAI. This includes Humanity's Last Exam in which it scored 41.6 per cent – which is around double of what OpenAI's o3 and o4-mini got on the test. When it comes to the toughest maths tests, OpenAI said ChatGPT Agent hit 27.4 per cent using a terminal that allows it to execute code. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The o4-mini, meanwhile, which was considered the top scorer on FrontierMath, netted a mere 6.3 per cent. The company combined teams from both Operator and Deep Research to work on ChatGPT Agent. The team comprised between 20 and 35 people. Why is it significant? Because until now, all the AI chatbots have simply sought to answer questions from users. OpenAI is taking things a step further than its rivals by making ChatGPT Agent more of a personal assistant. Countries and companies across the world are currently in an AI arms race. DeepSeek, a previously little-known Chinese firm, shook up Wall Street and Silicon Valley earlier this year. The Trump administration has vowed to spend $500 billion in the AI race in a project it has dubbed 'Stargate'. OpenAI says users can even instruct ChatGPT Agent while the task is unfolding. 'Likewise, ChatGPT itself may proactively seek additional details from you when needed to ensure the task remains aligned with your goals. If a task takes longer than anticipated or feels stuck, you can pause it, ask it for a progress summary, or stop it entirely and receive partial results. If you have the ChatGPT app on your phone, it will send you a notification when it's done with your task,' says OpenAI in its blog post. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, the team behind the software warns that ChatGPT Agent is still a bit slow – relatively speaking of course. 'Even if it takes 15 minutes, half an hour, it's quite a big speed-up compared to how long it would take you to do it,' Fulford told The Verge. 'It's one of those things where you can kick something off in the background and then come back to it.' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to social media to tout ChatGPT Agent's potential. Fulford told Wired she asked ChatGPT agent to order cupcakes for her. 'I was very specific about what I wanted, and it was a lot of cupcakes,' she says. 'That one took almost an hour—but it was easier than me doing it myself, because I didn't want to do it.' For those who worry, ChatGPT Agent also asks for user permission before doing important things such as sending an email or making a booking. The firm has said that it has built many protections into ChatGPT Agent. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This includes refusing to work on 'high-risk' tasks such as bank transfers. 'We have built a lot of safeguards and warnings into it, and broader mitigations than we've ever developed before from robust training to system safeguards to user controls, but we can't anticipate everything. In the spirit of iterative deployment, we are going to warn users heavily and give users freedom to take actions carefully if they want to,' Altman said. He recommended that users refrain from giving ChatGPT Agent too much personal information. 'We recommend giving agents the minimum access required to complete a task to reduce privacy and security risks,' he added. Still, Altman took to social media to tout ChatGPT Agent's potential. 'Agent represents a new level of capability for AI systems and can accomplish some remarkable, complex tasks for you using its own computer. It combines the spirit of Deep Research and Operator, but is more powerful than that may sound—it can think for a long time, use some tools, think some more, take some actions, think some more, etc,' Altman wrote on X. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'For example, we showed a demo in our launch of preparing for a friend's wedding: buying an outfit, booking travel, choosing a gift, etc. We also showed an example of analysing data and creating a presentation for work,' he added. Citi downgrades to Indian equities to ‘neutral' from ‘overweight'; here's why
Brokerage firm Citi has cut down its rating on Indian equities to 'neutral' from 'overweight', pointing to expensive valuations and weaker earnings growth forecasts. 'India remains most expensive market (23 times) vs both its peers and its own average valuation,' the firm said in a note, even as it acknowledged that India's macroeconomic story is stronger than many of its peers and a favourable US trade deal is possible, ET cited the firm. However, it believes the outlook for earnings growth is 'no longer exceptional' given the current market levels. Citi continues to prefer China, Korea, and the Philippines, citing better earnings revision trends and more attractive valuations in those markets. Within India, Citi favours banks, NBFCs, healthcare, and telecoms, but maintains an underweight stance on IT services, metals, and consumer staples. 'A turnaround in FII sentiment (relatively favorable trade deal with US, consumption growth recovery, etc., could aid) could support valuations/performance,' the firm added. Meanwhile, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have intensified their selling activities in Indian equity markets, with net outflows occurring across five successive trading sessions. During this short but significant period, FIIs have pulled out Rs 10,169 crore, exceeding $1 billion in total sales. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Weather Tomorrow search Click Here Undo These figures incorporate the substantial outflow observed on July 17. The largest withdrawal was witnessed on July 17, with FIIs offloading Rs 3,671 crore, representing the second-highest single-day outflow within the recent five sessions. The most substantial single-day withdrawal amounted to Rs 4,495 crore, highlighting the considerable scale of FII departures from the market. All India Digital Cable Federation urges Centre to reject TRAI's proposal to reduce DTH license fee
All India Digital Cable Federation ( AIDCF ) has written a letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, reiterating its concerns around the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's proposals to reduce the license fee paid by DTH operators . In February 2025, TRAI reiterated its earlier proposal, made in the Recommendations on License Fee and Policy Matters of DTH Services , dated 21 August 2023, to reduce the DTH license fee from the current 8 per cent to 3 per cent, with a further plan to phase it out entirely by 2026-27. Home Fitness Hack Shop Now Undo "This move would also further exacerbate the loss to the public exchequer," they argued in the letter to the government. Currently, spectrum is allotted to DTH operators in Ku band on administrative basis - Free of cost. According to AIDCF, the DTH operators are paying license fee because spectrum was bundled with license fee on AGR in order to avoid initial capex burden on the sector. Live Events In their letter, AIDCF also argued that DTH operators already enjoy structural and commercial advantages over cable TV operators. "Unlike DTH operator's free spectrum, Cable TV operators incur substantial cost over ROW (Right of Way charges) which is up to Rs 3,000 per pole per year besides permission charges to be paid to local authorities for overhead and underground cables. The Cable TV operators also incur a CAPEX of Rs 8 lakh per km for underground cabling besides annual and regular maintenance of Overhead and Underground Cabling of those deployed cables," the letter read. Additionally, for the acquisition of each customer, a Cable TV multi-system operator (MSO) and local cable operator (LCO) have to incur approximately Rs 5,000 per customer as capital expenditure, while DTH operators face minimal incremental capital expenditure spending for new customers, and in addition, no sunk infrastructure costs in case of churn, AIDCF noted. "To ensure fairness and prevent further regulatory arbitrage in favour of DTH operators, the license fee on DTH services should not be reduced or eliminated. Instead, the regulatory framework should include mechanisms to recover the full cost of the spectrum assigned to DTH. Such measures would align with principles of equity, sustain government revenue, and maintain a level playing field across service providers," the AIDCF letter read. Any reduction in the license fee for DTH operators will not only destabilise the market but also jeopardise the livelihoods of nearly 10 lakh people directly dependent on the cable TV industry, cable operators asserted, reiterating their demand to "reject" the TRAI recommendation to reduce or eliminate the DTH license fee.
