Perak PMR 2025: JPPKK Offers Free Maintenance Services For 300 Motorcycles
LUMUT, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (JPPKK) is offering free basic maintenance services for up to 300 motorcycles with engine capacities below 160cc, as part of the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR), at Lumut Waterfront, beginning today.
Kolej Komuniti Pasir Salak director Mohd Shahrir Ahmad Zaini said the service was part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, in collaboration with several polytechnics and community colleges in the state, including Kolej Komuniti Gerik, Kolej Komuniti Bagan Datuk and Kolej Komuniti Sungai Siput.
'We will begin by providing engine oil changes, followed by filter and spark plug replacements - these are the basic maintenance services we are offering free of charge throughout the PMR programme,' he said when met at the event today.
He added that over the course of the three-day programme, a total of 100 motorcycles will be serviced each day on a first-come, first-served basis, starting from 9 am until the daily quota is reached.
Mohd Shahrir noted that the free maintenance, carried out by the colleges' teaching staff and students, presents a valuable opportunity for the Perak community, particularly residents in the Lumut and Manjung.
He added that the motorcycle maintenance programme aligns with the theme of Perak PMR 2025, 'Pendidikan Tinggi, Memacu Negara MADANI' by promoting the value and role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in national development.
'We want to show the community that these students are already skilled and capable, even though they haven't completed their studies, they can carry out basic maintenance tasks confidently,' he said.
'This, in turn, may help boost public confidence in TVET programmes offered by community colleges and polytechnics across the country.
Meanwhile, civil servant Rozman Azahari, 52, said the free motorcycle maintenance initiative is the first of its kind to be introduced under the PMR programme.

Verstappen Tops First Practice at Canadian GP, Williams Surprise
BERLIN, June 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- Four-time defending champion Max Verstappen was fastest in the first practice on Friday for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix, reported German news agency dpa. The Red Bull driver clocked 1 minute 13.193 seconds to beat the Williams of Alex Albon by 0.039s. Albon was a surprise in second and his team-mate Carlos Sainz completed the top three, giving Williams the best possible start to the race weekend. bootstrap slideshow Constructors' title holders McLaren, meanwhile, didn't show their full hand with Lando Norris in seventh and championship leader Oscar Piastri in 14th. Ferrari had Lewis Hamilton in fifth, while Charles Leclerc was 10th after having his time on track cut short due to a crash. The Monegasque spun and hit the barriers, bringing out the red flag 15 minutes into practice and causing a lot of damage to his car. Verstappen needs to be on his best behaviour for the next two races after he was hit with three penalty points on his licence at the Spanish Grand Prix on June 1, which leaves him just one point away from a race ban. Two of his penalty points will expire on June 30, moving him three points away from a race ban in time for the British Grand Prix on July 6. The Dutchman was punished for causing a collision with George Russell and he was also handed a 10-second penalty in the race.

Kejara System To Undergo Major Revamp, Says Loke
GENERAL SHAH ALAM, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Demerit Points System for Traffic Offences (Kejara) will undergo a major revamp soon, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the current system was ineffective and largely seen as a failure, as points are only deducted after traffic offenders either settle their summonses or are charged in court - not when the summons is first issued. 'As Transport Minister, I admit that the Kejara system has failed because our approach was flawed,' he said. 'Therefore, I believe the system urgently needs a complete overhaul, and the ministry is currently exploring a new approach for implementation,' he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the Speed Limitation Device (SLD) for commercial vehicles at Scania (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, here today. The Kejara system is a mechanism for assigning demerit points to drivers who commit scheduled offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and relevant regulations. A total of 20 traffic offences, identified as having the potential to cause serious or fatal accidents and pose risks to other road users, have been listed under the system's implementation. -- BERNAMA

Mandatory Enforcement Of SLD For Commercial Vehicles Starts Oct 1
SHAH ALAM, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport will begin phased enforcement of mandatory Speed Limitation Devices (SLD) for commercial vehicles, including express and tour buses, starting Oct 1 this year. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the enforcement by the Road Transport Department (RTD) is part of the ministry's broader initiative to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of fatal accidents involving such vehicles. The phased implementation will initially apply to all express and tour buses, as well as heavy goods vehicles exceeding 3,500 kilogrammes (kg) in maximum permissible weight, registered from Jan 1, 2015 onwards. 'Operators are required to obtain a functional verification and SLD report from the vehicle manufacturer or any party recognised by the RTD, including technical services, authorised workshops or service facilities, or certification bodies accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia,' he said. The SLD verification documents and reports must be renewed every two years and presented at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) as well as during permit applications or renewals with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), he added. Speaking at a press conference following the launch of the SLD implementation for commercial vehicles today, he said the verification documents must be kept in the vehicle at all times for enforcement purposes. Loke said the activation of the SLD function within the Electronic Control Unit will be mandatory from Jan 1, 2026 for heavy goods vehicles exceeding 3,500 kg and vehicles carrying more than eight passengers that were registered before Jan 1, 2015. He added that the requirement will also apply to rebuilt vehicles and imported used goods vehicles exceeding 3,500 kg in maximum permissible weight. He said that for heavy goods vehicles exceeding 3,500 kg and vehicles carrying more than eight passengers that are not equipped with an SLD system, it will be mandatory to install an RTD-approved retrofit SLD device, effective July 1, 2026.
