First responders told the Chinese media outlet that three people died in the tragedy and 150 were rescued.
'Three people were killed, and nearly 150 were rescued safely. They were rescued by the joint rescue team and local fishermen's boats,' Veri Ariyanto, a senior official at the provincial Search and Rescue Office, told Xinhua.
About 130 passengers were still unaccounted for, and a search and rescue mission was underway. Two ships, several rigid inflatable boats and other vessels have been deployed in the operation, Ariyanto said.
Social media videos captured chaotic scenes as a massive fire and thick black smoke consumed the ferry, with one clip showing terrified passengers leaping into the sea amid screams and desperate pleas for help from survivors.
Another video depicted passengers donning life rings and bright orange life jackets, bracing to jump from the vessel. A survivor also recorded himself holding onto a baby after escaping the blazing ferry.

Nagpur struggles with unresolved civic complaints despite improved cleanliness ranking
1 2 Nagpur: Buried under a deluge of complaints, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is struggling to address civic grievances, exposing a widening gap between public expectations and actual service delivery. Between April 1 and August 4, the civic body received a staggering 56,400 complaints, averaging 460 per day across 31 departments. However, it resolved only 35,563 — around 276 per day — exposing delays in grievance redressal and coordination among departments. The stats paint a grim picture despite Nagpur climbing from 27th to 22A in the revised Swachh Survekshan rankings. While officials cite this as proof of improved sanitation and public engagement, citizens continue to deal with overflowing garbage bins, foul-smelling drains, and chronic waterlogging. The health sanitation department led the list with 21,183 complaints, of which 3,829 remain unresolved, raising questions over the efficiency of solid waste management, despite repeated contract extensions and mechanisation efforts. The Public Works Department (PWD) followed with 7,178 complaints, mostly related to pothole-ridden roads, broken footpaths, and pending repairs. The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, responsible for sewerage, stormwater drains, and waterlogging, logged 6,443 complaints. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Living perfectly well without American goods': Why more Chinese shoppers support local brands CNA Read More Undo The water works department registered 3,386 complaints, reflecting ongoing issues with the drinking water supply. Meanwhile, 2,431 complaints were lodged with the malaria and filaria department, triggered by a surge in mosquito infestations during the monsoon. Other departments with high complaint volumes included the garden department (3,920) and the encroachment department (2,894). Notably, 8,939 complaints were either rejected or remain marked as "under progress," with little or no visible action on the ground. "Swachh rankings are for dashboards. We want our drains cleared, garbage lifted on time, and streets swept daily," said a Gandhibagh resident who has filed five complaints since June — all marked "resolved," though the garbage outside her house hasn't moved in days. Of the total complaints, 9,152 came through the call centre, 23,994 via the official website, and 22,235 through the mobile app. To his credit, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has expanded access to grievance platforms via call centre, website, and mobile app. A senior NMC stated that the improved ranking reflects better digital documentation and citizen engagement. But for many residents, metrics mean little when garbage remains uncleared and drains continue to stink. With civic elections approaching, voters may not be impressed by rankings or PR campaigns. The real verdict, many say, will be delivered on broken roads, mosquito-infested lanes, and stagnant water in low-lying areas. Until the speed and quality of complaint resolution improves, and inter-departmental coordination strengthens, Nagpur's "clean city" tag risks being buried under the very garbage it fails to lift. Poor Ratings Reflect Public Discontent Despite the civic body's digital outreach initiatives, citizen satisfaction with complaint redressal remains lukewarm. Of all the resolved complaints, only 202 received a 10-star rating, while 81 were rated just one star, indicating frustration over delays and incomplete resolutions. Delays & Deadlocks A key concern is the number of cases stuck due to "financial implications". As many as 444 complaints, mostly related to road resurfacing, sewer reconnections, and broken drain repairs, remain unresolved because of a funds crunch. Insiders admit that such cases often get caught in bureaucratic bottlenecks, halting progress indefinitely. Adding to the woes is rampant inter-departmental buck-passing. Over 2,000 complaints have been transferred between departments without resolution. The Public Works, Garden, Encroachment, and Public Health Engineering departments top the list, highlighting serious coordination and accountability lapses. This Japanese savoury egg custard recipe will make sure you go gourmet with your protein intake
It's Custard Day! A traditional Japanese savoury custard for making your protein intake gourmet-coded Now while the idea of a savoury custard may not be ALL that unique, the term, almost unanimously brings about mental imagery of sugar and indulgence. This traditional yet super simple Chawanmushi recipe all the way from Japan however, flips the script with its salty, light and creamy bites. Follow the recipe below. Chawanmushi Ingredients: For the egg custard — egg - 1, dashi (vegetable or chicken stock) - 1/2 cup, light soy sauce - 1/2tsp, sake (or dry sherry or Chinese rice wine) - 1/2tsp, a pinch of salt; For the filling — carrot slices - 6, mushrooms (preferably shiitake cleaned and stems off) - 2, cooked shrimp or prawn - 2 Method: Use a pan wide enough to hold two ramekins (or bowls) comfortably along with water that rises half-way up the height of the latter. Bring this water in the pan to a boil. Separately, beat the egg just enough to break and dissolve the yolk — the goal is to not get too much air in it. Add the dashi, soy, salt and sake and give it a swirl. Split the shrimp in half and place at the bottom of the ramekins topped with the mushrooms and carrots. Strain the egg mixture over this arrangement letting the carrots float to the top. Put the lids on the ramekins or simply cover with foil to trap the steam. Cook the ramekins half-way submerged in water on low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes. This dish can be had hot or cold depending on preference of taste and texture. (recipe from Caroline's Cooking) Eggs inadvertently appear to be part of everyday rotations in meals — this recipe ensures that you don't have to get bored to death with your typical order. So give the boiled bits and the sunny-side ups a rest and get your protein in the Japanese way instead!

5 creepy secrets buried in Genghis Khan's past
Across the annals of history, few figures loom as large as Genghis Khan. His stories of conquest advanced the boundaries of continents, while his leadership brought together peoples from diverse backgrounds. Beyond the battlefield, the Great Khan's life touches upon interesting human stories, about culture, power, mystery, and legacy. Here are five surprising facts about Genghis Khan, his empire, and conquests , His harem was massive Officially, Genghis Khan had 44 recognised wives and concubines, but historians estimate his harem numbered up to 500 women. This huge household was organized into four sub‑harems, or 'ordos,' each managed by a principal wife, namely, Börte, Khulan, Yesui, and Yesugen. Börte held the highest status as great empress or khatun. Each woman had her own yurt, and the Khan visited several each night, resulting in a vast progeny. How he died remains unclear The circumstances of Genghis Khan's death in 1227 are still debated. Some accounts say he died from injuries after falling from his horse, while others suggest illness like pneumonia or malaria. A legend tells of a Chinese princess who allegedly murdered him in revenge. But historians cannot confirm any version, making his demise part of an enduring myth. However, this is just based on popular legend. His descendants are his biggest legacy Genghis Khan's many children have left a remarkable genetic footprint. According to National Geographic, nearly 8% of men in Asia carry nearly identical Y‑chromosome sequences, meaning about 0.5% of men worldwide, or 16 million people, likely tracing back to a common ancestor in Mongolia about 1,000 years ago. Scholars say this is a rare case where culture amplified one male lineage's reach. Nobody knows where he's buried Genghis Khan was buried in secret, in an unmarked grave somewhere in Mongolia, possibly near his birthplace in the Khentii Mountains or the Onon River region, as per reports from BBC. To hide the location, stories say his followers killed everyone along the funeral route and rode 1,000 horses over the grave, forests and a diverted river may conceal it still. Even today, archaeologists have not located his tomb. He promoted ethnic diversity in his empire Genghis Khan's nomadic Mongol Empire was vast, but the Mongols lacked the bureaucratic skills to administer it alone. Instead of enforcing homogeneity, he welcomed talent from the conquered masses. For example, Central Asian Muslims and Han Chinese were appointed as administrators in new territories to help govern effectively. In Bukhara, for instance, he placed Chinese and Khitan administrators over Muslim populations. This strategy from Khan about inclusion helped strengthen his rule across vast regions.
