Former Aussie legend Bob Cowper dies at 84 due to undisclosed illness

Bob Cowper, the elegant left-hander who etched his name into cricket history with Test cricket's first triple century on Australian soil, has died aged 84 after an undisclosed illness. Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Sunday, describing Cowper as a respected figure whose contributions had left a lasting impact on the game. Officials recalled his legendary 307 at the MCG in 1966 as a defining moment in Australian cricket, praising his consistency and poise at the crease. They also reflected on his influence in the national and Victorian teams during the 1960s. Cowper's family, including his wife Dale and daughters Olivia and Sera, survive him. The cricket community is remembering him not just for his runs, but for the dignity and dedication he brought to the sport.
A brief but impactful Test career
Cowper played 27 Tests for Australia between 1964 and 1968, scoring 2,061 runs at an average of 46.84. He notched up five centuries and also contributed with the ball, taking 36 wickets with his part-time off-spin. His calm demeanour and technical proficiency made him one of the most reliable batters of his time.
Historic triple century at the MCG
The highlight of Cowper's career came in February 1966, when he scored a mammoth 307 against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The innings, which lasted 12 hours and took 589 balls, remains the only Test triple century made in Australia in the 20th century. It came in dramatic fashion after Cowper had been left out of the previous Test in Adelaide and returned on his home ground to produce one of the game's greatest innings.
Second only to Bradman at home
Cowper's record on home soil was particularly outstanding. His average of 75.78 in Tests played in Australia ranks second only to Sir Donald Bradman, cementing his place among the elite. Though his international career was relatively short, he left an enduring mark with both bat and ball.
Life beyond cricket
Following his retirement in 1968, Cowper pursued a career as a stockbroker but remained involved in cricket as an ICC match referee. His lifelong service to the game was recognised in 2023 when he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Tributes from Cricket Australia
Cricket Australia remembered Cowper as a 'wonderful batter' and a figure who had a 'strong influence' on Australian and Victorian cricket. Chairman Mike Baird said Cowper's triple century at the MCG would forever be one of the sport's iconic moments, highlighting both his skill and composure.
A lasting legacy
Survived by his wife and two daughters, Bob Cowper leaves behind not only a remarkable statistical record but also a legacy of grace and commitment to cricket. His contribution to Australian sport will continue to inspire generations to come.

Gill has work to do on Test match batting and it won't be easy as captain: Ricky Ponting

Shubman Gill has work to do on his Test match batting and considering the added responsibility of captaincy on the upcoming tour of England, he should move himself down to number four in the order, reckons Australian great Ricky Ponting. There is plenty of speculation over India's new number four following the retirement of Virat Kohli and Ponting has backed Gill to take up that position at least in the initial stages of his leadership tenure beginning with the five-Test rubber from June 20. "His white ball form has been incredibly good. He's got a little bit of work to do, on his Test match batting. And that's never easy when you're a new captain, to have to worry about your batting to the degree that he's going to have to, it won't be easy for him," Ponting told PTI on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he coached Punjab Kings to the final. The newly appointed Test captain started his career as an opener before moving down to number three last year. Ponting said India have made the right investment in Gill the captain. The two-time ODI World Cup winning skipper sees Gill serving India for a long time. 'I actually named him as captain for the Sydney Test match last summer when Rohit didn't play that game and there was a bit of an injury cloud over Bumrah, or as that game went on, Bumrah actually broke down in that game.' "And look, I don't know Shubman that well. I've spoken to him six, eight, 10 times, maybe the last couple of years around different things and around batting and around leadership. He's done a great job with GT [Gujarat Titans] , no doubt about that," he said. "But he just seemed the sort of guy that the extra responsibility wouldn't faze too much. It seems like he's got a really level head on his shoulders. He's someone that's going to be around in Indian cricket for another 10 years." Gill needs to work on defence, mindset In his 32-Test career, Gill has been found guilty of playing with hard hands on multiple occasions. His defensive technique too has been questioned. Ponting feels Gill also has work to do on the mental side of Test match batting. '...it's a bit both, there's some of the great Test players that haven't had great defensive games, (Virender) Sehwag is probably a great example of that.' "But if you're in control of your stroke-play, you don't have to worry too much about your defence. I mean, obviously it's (defence) a big part of Test match cricket, but I think it's more his mental application," he explained. Ponting said he sees no technical fault in Gill's defence. "[But] I think sometimes you might just get a little bit either ahead of himself or a little bit lazy in the middle of a test match innings. You can't afford to do that. You've got to be 100 per cent committed to every ball that you face through six or seven hours of every day... "I think that's the challenge for Shubman...," said Ponting. Why number four for Gill Ponting has picked Gill at number four for the first at Leeds for a set of reasons. "...the reason I did that was if they go with [Yashasvi] Jaiswal, and if Sai Sudarshan is the other opener, they need someone a bit more experienced at number three. So that could be either, KL at three, or that could be a Karun Nair at three and Shubman at four. "...once you grow into it, then you can move yourself back up to that number three spot," said one of the finest batters of his generation. Right time for Sudharsan to make Test debut The reason Ponting won't have Rahul open with Jaiswal is because he wants Sudharsan to get his opportunity at the top of the order. The southpaw has been rated highly and has been in sensational touch of late. "I think the time's right for Sudarshan to come into the side, to be honest. There's a bit of a regeneration that's going to happen around this Indian team now, obviously with Rohit and Virat not there. "Every team goes through to me like Sudarshan's ready. Lots of first class runs, his IPL form this year has been probably better than anybody else," he pointed out about the Orange Cap winner of the just-concluded season. "Technically, seems fine. And, you know, KL down in the middle order somewhere probably just gives that bit more stability."

It's our collective dream to lift the WTC 2025 trophy: Aiden Markram

As South Africa prepares to face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 Final at Lord's on 11 June, batter Aiden Markram has spoken about the team's burning desire to end their long wait for a major ICC title. He described the upcoming contest as a shared goal that the squad has been building towards over the past few years, calling it a collective dream to finally lift the Test mace. While recent sporting triumphs—from RCB's maiden IPL title to PSG's UEFA Champions League win—have sparked hopes of an underdog wave, Markram noted that the Proteas haven't consciously discussed those stories in the dressing room. However, he admitted that he personally hopes such a pattern continues, allowing South Africa to join the list of first-time winners this year. Steady rise fuels belief South Africa enters the WTC Final after a consistent run across formats. Markram pointed out that the team had shown steady progress, with several near-misses in recent ICC tournaments. He highlighted how the side had reached the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup and semi-finals in the last ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy, which reflects their upward trajectory. He emphasised that every player in the squad had been given clear instructions and that the coaching group was encouraging individuals to trust the skills that earned them selection over the two-year WTC cycle. Australia challenge well understood Facing the defending champions won't be easy, but Markram said South Africa knew what to expect from Australia—both in terms of skill level and competitive intensity. He shared that matches against Australia always brought out the best in his team, and this final would be no different. Calm before the storm The Proteas have been preparing in Arundel with a warm-up match against Zimbabwe before moving to London. Markram shared that the atmosphere in camp remained positive and energised, even as anticipation for the final built steadily. He remarked that nerves would come as the game approached, but the squad was ready for the challenge and united by a singular mission—to win South Africa's first-ever WTC crown.
