China is unlikely to get involved in the ongoing faceoff between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, news agency PTI said on April 27 qouting a former Indian army commander. China's actions at this juncture will be majorly influenced by the existing geopolitical dynamics and tariff-related intricacies, Lt Gen (retd) Rana Pratap Kalita told the news agency in an interview. The former armyman, however, said that China's alliance with Pakistan is well established. 'After the Galwan incident in 2020, extensive discussions and consultations between the two nations led to the resolution of the stand-off at the remaining friction points,' Kalita said.Kalita noted that a 'process of normalization' has been initiated after addressing the last areas of discord, and that bilateral mechanisms have gained momentum, which includes discussions aimed at launching direct flights and resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. He also highlighted the impact of increased trade tariffs imposed by the US on both India and China, pointing out that this situation affects the global economy as well.Given that both nations are significant players in manufacturing and consumption, changes in tariffs will have pronounced effects, he explained.'Considering these complexities alongside the geopolitical developments, it is challenging to forecast whether there will be any direct involvement from China regarding the instability sparked by the Pahalgam incident. However, at this point, I do not foresee their direct engagement,' the former army commander remarked. He also underscored the known vulnerabilities of the sea link with Pakistan, emphasizing the significance of access to the Arabian Sea for China.Regarding the security situation along the Bangladesh border, Kalita expressed concerns, particularly following the recent change in government in Bangladesh. 'The sentiment against India has intensified since the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government, as this has been exacerbated by religious extremists,' he remarked. He pointed out that the release of leaders associated with terrorist groups like Ansarul Bangla after the new caretaker government took office has further contributed to rising anti-India sentiments. The former army commander also noted that visits by senior Pakistani military officials, including the Director General of the ISI, to Bangladesh have heightened vulnerabilities in the region. He expressed concerns about migration from Bangladesh and the infiltration aimed at promoting Islamic fundamentalism in India's northeastern states, particularly in Assam and Tripura, which are demographically sensitive.Kalita identified the narrow Siliguri corridor as another vulnerable point for India, as it is crucial for maintaining strategic connectivity with the northeast. Additionally, he raised alarms about the potential revival of terrorist camps in Bangladesh where groups like ULFA once operated. Nonetheless, he reassured that the Indian armed forces are equipped to handle any situation that may arise.'Regular threat perception assessments are conducted, and response strategies are prepared accordingly. I am confident that our forces in the Eastern sector are ready to address any challenges,' he said.

'Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge': Karnataka Deputy CM's epic take on rumours of buying franchise

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Wednesday shut down rumours about him buying the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise in epic fashion. His statement came a day after RCB owners, Diageo India — the Indian arm of UK-based Diageo Plc — responded to speculation that part or all of the IPL franchise was up for sale "I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," Shivakumar told news agency ANI. Earlier this week, a Bloomberg report said that the British distiller was in discussion with potential advisers on selling the club. Diageo owns the team through its Indian unit, United Spirits Ltd., and may seek a valuation of as much as $2 billion. Following the rumours, the shares of United Spirits, registered with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), gained a 3.3 per cent increase in its price, this hitting a five-month high on Tuesday morning. This forced the BSE to sent out a mail to Diageo, who then responded saying the reports were merely speculative in nature. Mital Sanghvi, the company secretary, informed the regulating body of the Indian Stock Market on the mail saying, "The company would like to clarify that the aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussion. This is for your information and records."

Pak hikes defence spending by 20% in budget amid tense relations with India

Pakistan on Tuesday increased its defence budget by 20 per cent, allocating PRs. 2,550 billion (USD 9 billion) for the fiscal year 2025-26, amid tensions with India. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the PRs. (Pakistani Rupees) 17,573 billion worth federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 in the National Assembly. He also presented the budget document as a finance bill in the National Assembly. In his speech, the minister said that the government has 'decided to allocate PRs. 2,550 for the defence of the country'. He didn't provide any further details about the defence spending as traditionally the defence budget is not discussed by the parliament. Last year, the government allocated PRs. 2,122 billion for defence, reflecting a 14.98 per cent increase over PRs. 1,804 billion budgeted for the fiscal year 2023-24. 'This budget is being presented at a historic time when the nation showed unity [and] determination,' the minister said at the start while mentioning the recent Pak-India conflict. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. The on-ground hostilities from the Indian and Pakistan sides that lasted for four days ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10. The defence sector expenses are the second-biggest component of the annual expenditure after the debt payments. The government allocated PRs. 8,207 billion for debt servicing, which constitutes the single biggest expense. The increase in the defence expenditure is expected to get the broad support of the lawmakers during the budget debate and voting on the finance bill. Aurangzeb also announced a 4.2 per cent GDP growth target for the economy which is higher than the 2.7 per cent achieved in the current year ending on June 30. He said that debt and interest servicing would cost PRs. 8,207 billion. Other key expenses include PRs. 971 billion for civil administration, PRs. 1,186 billion for subsidies, PRs. 1,055 billion for pensions and PRs. 1,000 billion for the Public Sector Development Programme. He said that the target for inflation was 7.5 per cent and the fiscal deficit target was 3.9 per cent as the government also announced to contain the deficit and achieve a primary surplus. The minister said that the government has set an ambitious tax collection target for the Federal Board of Revenue at PRs. 14,131 billion, an 8.95 per cent increase from last year's goal. Aurangzeb said that the main success of the government was that inflation was reduced to 4.7 per cent in the outgoing fiscal whereas it was 29.2 per cent two years ago, while the government achieved a current account surplus of USD 1.5 billion. He said the forex reserves will touch USD 14 billion by the end of the year and remittances were expected to reach USD 38 billion.

Gautam Adani visits Chinese equipment makers as US legal woes linger

Indian billionaire Gautam Adani traveled to China last week to meet industrial equipment manufacturers, marking what appears to be his first overseas trip since the US unveiled criminal and civil cases against him in November. The visit, including to a solar module maker, underscores Adani's continued efforts to maintain momentum in renewables even as he faces heightened scrutiny abroad. Sagar Adani , who oversees the green arm of the conglomerate's sprawling empire, accompanied his uncle on the trip, according to a social media post by one of the companies he visited. The trip to China could signal a renewed push for international engagement as Gautam Adani tries to shake off controversies, from US legal troubles to investor concerns about corporate governance practices, following a bruising short-seller report in early 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Prices of Solar Panels Might Actually Surprise You Solar Panels | Search Ads Get Info Asia's second-richest person, along with his nephew Sagar, face criminal and civil charges in the US over their alleged involvement in a $250 million bribery scheme to pay regional officials in India to lock in solar-power contracts. — BROAD_ltd (@BROAD_ltd) Live Events The Adani Group has denied the claims, though both Gautam and Sagar have curtailed their international travel since the indictment was announced. The Indian conglomerate is building one of the largest renewable energy parks — five times the size of Paris — near India's western coast with solar panels and wind turbines. The billionaire visited a Jinko Solar Co. manufacturing plant, inspecting the facility's automated production lines, the Shanghai-based company said in a statement on June 4. Its energy storage solutions are well-suited to India's high-temperature conditions and will be integrated into Adani's projects to bolster grid stability and renewable energy absorption, it said. Adani also visited Broad Group's facilities, the Chinese firm said in a post on X. The company has a range of subsidiaries that includes a wind turbine manufacturer. A spokesperson for Adani didn't immediately comment. The group's renewable energy ramp up plans are crucial for two of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's policy pledges — making the country carbon neutral by 2070 and self-reliant, especially in manufacturing. India is one of the biggest markets for China's solar modules and Adani's visit could also signal room for better business ties between the two countries. While relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors remain fraught, there have recently been signs of a thawing. In January, they agreed to resume direct flights, facilitate visas and restart sharing data of trans-border rivers. A few months later, the nations announced the resumption of an annual pilgrimage to the Tibet Autonomous Region, organized by India's foreign ministry, that had been suspended for years after border clashes erupted.
