‘Nice to help people out': CEO of EMS company empowers local EMT's to provide basic needs
EMTs and paramedics are trained to respond to medical emergencies. In nine communities along Rt. 495 in the Merrimac Valley, they're now empowered to help people with a much wider range of problems. David Daly, the CEO of Pridestar Trinity EMS, created a program called 'The Give.' 'We met people in really difficult circumstances and a lot of them didn't actually need medical treatment,' he said. 'They were in a challenging situation. We'd notice they didn't have a jacket, or they haven't eaten in a couple of days, or they needed a new pair of shoes.' As someone who started his career as an EMT, Daly knows his workers don't have a lot of extra money. 'So we started 'The Give' and it's a program that we give our staff the ability to go out and buy a meal for a person that needs it, who hasn't eaten, or a buy new pair of shoes. . . ultimately, it's at the discretion of the employees to choose what fits and they're allowed to do it without even being questioned.' Jaden Maldonado, a 4th grader from Dracut, was surprised when two EMT's presented him with a new bike. 'I was like, oh yea!' he said. EMT Kevin Gustafson said, 'We got called to an auto-pedestrian accident, car versus bike. So, we got to the scene, and it was obvious he had had a little accident. He was all bumped up, little bumps and bruises, nothing major. He was more shaken up and scared that it had happened and his bike was ruined.' Gustafson and his partner Billy Krikoris knew a bike was a big deal for a 4th grader and that Jaden's family would be hard pressed to replace his mangled set of wheels. So that's when they decided to use The Give and buy Jaden a new bike. 'Obvious, we primarily focus on the medical aspect first, but if we, while we're doing everything, notice hey, like they could use something like this, that's just something we keep it in the back of our minds. After they're out of the hospital and whatever, we can see if we can help them out with it,' explained Krikoris. This program comes at a time when the EMTs say they're seeing more people in need. 'The city is definitely busy,' said Sam Coutu as he cruised the streets of Lowell. For example, they buy a lot of tents for homeless people. 'Pillows, just stuff they need to be more comfortable in the elements.' Coutu also said they aid many senior citizens in the area. 'So, like an old woman, her house is really hot and she's lethargic and we notice it's hot in the house, we'll try to buy her an air conditioner. We notice someone's fridge isn't working, we can try to do something about that.' Krikoris added, 'It's nice to help people out, especially when they're already in a bad place.' Daly believes this program has a positive impact on his staff. He says they see many troubling situations in the course of their work, and this empowers them to step in and help – no questions asked. Wrestler charged with kidnap after 'HELP!' note left at Jersey Mike's
A professional wrestler has been charged with felony kidnapping and assault after his alleged victim left a note in a Florida sandwich shop begging for help, according to authorities. Jordan Williams, a 34-year-old blue-haired wrestler known as Jayden Steele in the ring, was busted after investigators reviewed surveillance footage at the Jersey Mike's in Navarre where the note was found, according to NBC 15 News. Sandwich maker Eleanor Coffee told the outlet that she found the crumpled-up note on the restroom floor. '[The author] was like, 'Please help me. I'm at this address in Navarre. I need you to call the police and do a wellness check,'' said Coffee, who immediately alerted her manager and called 911. 'Let cops know don't approach the house unless my Hyundai Kona is in the driveway because his parents will alert him and he will hurt me… I just want to get home to my kids and family… He controls my phone so he will know [if you message me],' the note read, according to the arrest report seen by EWrestling News. 'Please help get me home! HELP!' 3 Professional wrestler Jordan Williams was arrested after a chilling note was found in a Jersey Mike's. Santa Rosa County Sheriffâs Office The note was found by employees just 20 minutes after it had been left on May 27, according to the arrest report. Cops were able to track down the alleged victim thanks to the details left in the note. Surveillance footage then led to Williams, who has a history of domestic violence, Chief Tifft from Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office told NBC News 15. 'There was two previous domestic violence incidents, so this is the third,' the chief said. 3 Jersey Mike's employee Eleanor Coffee found the shocking note. Deputies later found the alleged victim at a home they had on file for Williams, just two miles from the Jersey Mike's where the note was found. She had visible injuries and was rushed to the hospital for suspected broken bones and other trauma, police said. The accuser also reported a prolonged period of abuse, including six to eight months in isolation, repeated assaults and threats involving weapons, according to a news release shared by the Sheriff's Office on Facebook. She detailed three recent assaults in the past three months, including an occasion when he allegedly held a knife to her throat, a separate occasion when he strangled her and slammed her to the ground and knelt on her back, and a third when she said he punched her in the face, according to the arrest report. 3 The note was discovered in the restroom of a Jersey Mike's in Navarre, Florida. Google Maps The alleged victim told police Steele repeatedly threatened to kill her if she sought help, and her ex-husband has an active restraining order out against the defendant, according to the arrest report. The ex claimed Williams once held the victim captive for two days, during which time he allegedly tied her to a bed, urinated on her, and spat tobacco in her mouth, according to investigators. Williams made his first court appearance on May 29 and is being held without bond. He faces multiple domestic violence charges including felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felony kidnap, felony battery, misdemeanor battery/touch or strike and felony battery strangulation. Williams pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him and is currently being held at Santa Rosa County Jail. His arraignment is scheduled for June 19. 'Anybody who would do that to another woman, he don't need to be walking around free in our community,' Chief Tifft told NBC 15 News.
