Kendrapada: A male amur falcon, satellite-tagged in Manipur last year, reached Odisha after an extraordinary 4,000-km journey from southern Africa, scientists confirmed Friday.
The bird, named 'Chiuluan 2', was fitted with a satellite transmitter by researchers from the
Wildlife Institute of India
(WII), Dehradun, as part of a project to track migratory routes. Dr. Suresh Kumar, a senior WII scientist leading the study, reported that the bird's GPS tracker documented its presence at multiple locations across Odisha, including the Karlapat wildlife sanctuary in Kalahandi district on April 30, followed by sightings near Phulbani and Dhenkanal district on May 1 and 2, respectively.
The falcon's remarkable journey began when it was tagged and released on Nov 8, 2024, in Manipur's Tamenglong district. It spent 114 days in southern Africa, including 46 days in Botswana's Central Kalahari Reserve, before beginning its return journey. The bird covered 3,800 km in just 93 hours, crossing the Arabian Sea and flying over Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh before reaching Odisha. "Another tagged female falcon, 'Guangram', reached Kenya on Feb 1, but its transmitter ceased functioning due to technical issues," Dr. Kumar added.
The amur falcon (Falco amurensis), comparable in size to a pigeon, is known for undertaking one of the longest migrations among birds of prey. These falcons travel from their breeding grounds in Far East Asia to their wintering grounds in Africa, making a crucial stopover in north-east India.

Thousands of these falcons visit Manipur and Nagaland annually between Oct and Nov during their migration. "It is not the machine, but the man who rides it. I gave it a try with a scooter last year. I traversed nearly 2,000 km in the Himalayan range and decided to use a moped this time," he said. "While a moped is easy to manoeuvre, it lacks the momentum needed to tackle mountain stretches. The one I am using can reach a speed of up to 60 km. But a moped is easier as there are areas where the rider has to drag a two-wheeler," he said. The tourism department launched the exercise to prevent similar incidents during peak seasons and festivals, when many popular religious sites see overwhelming crowds. Tourism officials said Kainchi Dham was selected as the first location for the pilot study due to its consistently high footfall, especially in June during the annual bhandara in memory of Neem Karoli Baba. The temple draws lakhs of devotees annually and was already being monitored as a high-density spiritual site. The July stampede at Mansa Devi occurred on the first Monday of Shravan, a day that traditionally sees large turnouts, prompting urgent safety reviews at other key shrines. Under the new system, National Population Register (NPR) devices and CCTV cameras have been installed across the temple premises. A dedicated team is monitoring the number of devotees entering the shrine and the vehicles arriving in the area. "We've started the assessment from Kainchi Dham. The survey will determine the number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the shrine daily, as well as the volume of vehicles arriving in the area," an official said. Haridwar DM Mayur Dixit told TOI that a combination of short- and long-term measures had been rolled out at Mansa Devi temple following the stampede. "We have discussed a long-term redevelopment plan with senior officials, which includes widening of the pedestrian route and overall infrastructure upgrades at the temple. A detailed proposal has also been sent for consideration under the Kumbh Mela budget," he said. As part of immediate safety steps, all shops located within the temple complex and along the pedestrian route have been shut. The administration has also created a designated holding area within the premises and sealed the rear gate for routine use—it will now be used only as an emergency exit. To improve access and crowd movement, encroachments have been removed from the temple's approach routes. Authorities are also planning to install a permanent police check post in the area. The temple committee has been asked to deploy private security personnel and sanitation workers to ensure hygiene and order during busy hours. Dixit said a proposal had been submitted to repair and upgrade the hill bypass route to help manage pilgrim flow during peak seasons. He added that the entire temple and surrounding walkways would soon be brought under full CCTV surveillance for real-time crowd management and rapid emergency response. Officials said the survey results will help develop customised crowd management plans based on each site's topography and infrastructure.
