Penang's ferry terminal to get a major glow-up
Located at the heart of George Town's ferry network, the PRTU terminal will be revitalised with a fresh, contemporary design aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and improving operational efficiency.
PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said a request for proposal (RFP) had been issued.
The upgraded terminal is expected to feature a range of new facilities, including open-air parking, a sea-view observatory deck, food and beverage outlets, a garden bridge, and other tourism-friendly commercial amenities.
"The enhancement of PRTU is part of a wider initiative to improve Penang's ferry operations, which has already seen the introduction of four new ferries and upgrades to the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal (PSAH) in Butterworth," he said.
"The modernisation of PRTU is intended to strengthen integration between ferry services and other modes of public transport, delivering smoother connections for both locals and visitors.
"This redevelopment is more than just an infrastructure project — it is a step towards improving comfort, accessibility, and the overall experience for ferry users, while also contributing to Penang's tourism economy," he told a press conference today.
Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke conducted an official visit to Penang Port.
Yeoh said that the new commercial components of the upgraded terminal are aimed at transforming PRTU into not only a transport hub but also a vibrant destination in its own right, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
"The upgrade aligns with Penang Port's broader development strategy, which includes port expansion initiatives, green efforts such as solar energy integration, and digital transformation through systems like the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS)," he said.
"The transformation of PRTU reflects Penang's growing emphasis on sustainable urban mobility and supports Malaysia's broader goals of strengthening its maritime and tourism sectors ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026."
Penang Port has recently marked several milestones, including the enhancement of the Butterworth North Container Terminal (BNCT), which now handles up to 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with improved berth capacity and shorter ship waiting times.
The Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) has also been extended to accommodate Oasis-class cruise ships, enabling simultaneous berthing for up to 12,000 passengers.
Loke also reviewed the NBCT Expansion Master Plan, which spans 322.83ha through land reclamation.
Another key infrastructure initiative on the horizon is the Northern Petroleum Terminal (NPT) project — a petroleum hub in the northern region designed for bulk storage and capable of handling Medium Range (MR) tanker vessels.

Historic Taiping Market set to rival Australia's best, says Nga
TAIPING: The century-old market here is making a comeback, not just as a trading hub, but as a new tourist landmark. Once the heart of the town's bustling commerce, the historic Taiping Market is set to reopen next year, with hopes of rivalling world-famous markets like Melbourne's Queen Victoria Market and Perth's Fremantle Market. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who announced an additional RM100,000 allocation for lighting upgrades at the site, described the market's redevelopment as a transformative project in town. "Everyone knows this market. It used to be very old and worn down, but now it's getting a second life. "So in the future, this picture at night can be taken and sold as a postcard for Taiping. It can be sent worldwide, on a par with Victoria Market in Melbourne and Fremantle Market in Perth," he told reporters at the site here today. Nga said the market would officially reopen next year to coincide with the 70th birthday celebration of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, as well as the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. "The main structure is already completed. We're just adding finishing touches like LED lighting to enhance its charm and appeal. "That's why we're holding off the opening, to align with these two major milestones. Sultan Nazrin is expected to officiate the grand opening," he said. Nga said this when asked about the delay in the completion of the renovation works, which were previously reported to be scheduled for completion by August last year. As for the Day and Night Market located next to the Taiping Market, Nga said it would open next month in conjunction with Malaysia Day. He said the market project was part of a broader RM67 million development initiative comprising five major projects across the district. In addition, he also announced a new RM10.4 million allocation for infrastructure upgrades and landscaping projects in Taiping. "This includes nine infrastructure upgrades worth RM4.1 million. Among them are the refurbishment of the Kamunting General Market, the upgrading of hawker stalls at the Jalan Stesen Kamunting Hawker Centre and the installation of CCTV systems for the Taiping Municipal Council. "Another RM500,000 will go towards landscaping improvements at the Tanjung Sungai Mas Open Area, to create a more vibrant and liveable space for residents," he said. Nga also announced RM2.2 million for maintenance work at 22 non-Muslim houses of worship, alongside RM3.5 million for 24 new housing and Kampung Baru development projects. "Why is Taiping getting all this special attention? Because it's a national heritage town, a truly unique place with many Malaysian 'firsts'. "Taiping has the first market, the first court, the first land office, the first railway, the first church, the first museum and the list goes on.

Loke Clamps Down On Luxury Car Owners
Luxury car owners in Penang and across Malaysia will not see their vehicles returned unless they settle all outstanding road tax, insurance and compound payments, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He stressed that there are no shortcuts for those whose cars have been seized for lacking valid documentation, even if some think paying the RM300 compound is a cheaper alternative to annual road tax. 'Vehicles seized for not having valid road tax and insurance will only be released after all payments are settled,' he said after launching Foodpanda's Pandasafe initiative in Kuala Lumpur today. 'This includes road tax, insurance coverage and compounds. There's no way around it.' Loke said that the ministry is looking into proposals to increase the compound rates for such offences, although this would require amendments to current laws. 'We're preparing a paper to be presented to Cabinet. If we want to increase fines or compounds, we'll need to amend the Act first,' he added. He also confirmed that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is actively conducting operations to seize non-compliant vehicles as part of ongoing enforcement measures. 'Many people think paying a RM300 fine is enough. But in reality, they still need to pay road tax and insurance first. Their vehicles will not be released until these requirements are fulfilled,' he said. Previously, reports revealed that JPJ had identified more than 1,000 luxury vehicles across the country — including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche models — with expired road tax, some owned by celebrities and prominent businessmen. Many claim their vehicles are only driven on weekends. Loke maintained that action is being taken under current laws, without exception, as a way to educate motorists on the importance of complying with road safety regulations.

Hong Leong Bank Set to Deliver Financial Literacy Training to foodpanda's Delivery Partners
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 7 August 2025 - Hong Leong Bank ('HLB' or the 'Bank') has announced that it will conduct financial literacy training for foodpanda delivery partners as part of the pandasafe rider safety program. pandasafe, which was officiated by YB Anthony Loke, Minister of Transport Malaysia at a launch ceremony held at foodpanda's headquarters, is a data-driven, multi-touchpoint safety ecosystem, combining technology, education, and financial literacy to build a long-term culture of road safety for foodpanda's delivery partners. As part of this collaboration, HLB will deliver its award-winning HLB DuitSmart financial literacy workshops to selected foodpanda delivery partners, aligned with the Bank's commitment to driving financial awareness in Malaysia and supporting the gig economy. The gig economy is a vital and rapidly growing segment of Malaysia's workforce, with an estimated three million Malaysians, around 17% of the workforce, engaged in gig work in 2023.1 However, the nature of gig work, which often involves irregular income and daily earnings, can lead to a lack of long-term financial planning. A study by the UN Capital Development Fund 2 revealed that while many gig workers can meet their basic needs, they often lack regular savings and awareness of future financial security. This financial vulnerability makes them susceptible to emergencies and inflation, and highlights the critical need for accessible financial education. Kevin Lam, Group Managing Director and CEO of Hong Leong Bank, commented on how this collaboration reflects the Bank's heart of uplifting communities and promoting financial inclusion. 'As a Bank, we are committed to investing in the communities we serve, and that extends to our gig economy workers who are a vital cornerstone of our modern economy as well. To us, equipping these riders with financial literacy and awareness is not just a responsibility, but an imperative societal step forward for them to build a secure future. In line with this, we are proud to deliver our HLB DuitSmart program to the gig economy, leveraging our flagship initiative where our employees actively conduct financial literacy workshops in schools, corporations, and communities throughout the country. Through this, we are not just offering a workshop. We are providing a pathway for these individuals to take control of their financial well-being, manage their daily earnings effectively, and plan for a more stable future, truly embodying our belief that when our communities thrive, all of us prosper.' As part of HLB's collaboration with foodpanda, the Bank will conduct its award-winning HLB DuitSmart financial literacy workshops with foodpanda delivery partners, equipping them with essential money management skills and long-term financial planning. The sessions are specifically designed to be relevant to the delivery partners, with tips and tricks that cater to the various needs and requirements of the gig economy. Zalman Zainal, HLB's Chief Marketing and Communication Officer added, 'We are honoured to partner with foodpanda on this meaningful initiative. Our HLB DuitSmart program was designed to make financial education relatable and accessible, as we seek to empower the communities around us with important money management skills. Through this, we hope to continue creating long-lasting change and empower these delivery partners towards achieving their financial goals.' Since 2021, the Bank has conducted its HLB DuitSmart financial literacy workshops across the country, empowering students, businesses, and members of the community with vital financial knowledge and scam awareness. Powered by the Bank's own employees, the Bank has specifically tailored HLB DuitSmart workshops for more than 30,000 participants across over 280 workshops around the country, empowering schools, universities, businesses and communities with the tools and resources needed to achieve a brighter financial future. In recognition of its contribution to national financial inclusion, HLB DuitSmart has been awarded the Champion title for Enhancing Educational Opportunities / Improving Financial Literacy at ABM's 50th Anniversary Celebration CSR Excellence Awards 2024. The program has also received the Bank of the Year for Community Empowerment award at the Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2024.
