I'd rather sit with the fans, says Jeff Stelling amid row with Hartlepool owner

ITV News06-08-2025
Broadcaster Jeff Stelling has vowed to join Hartlepool fans on the terraces amid an escalating row with the National League club's owner.
Former Sky Sports and now TalkSPORT presenter Stelling joked on Tuesday evening that he might have to dress up as a Blues Brother to support the club after Raj Singh wrote to Pool's league rivals urging them not to admit him to their boardrooms this season.
The 70-year-old stood down as honorary president in May in protest at the owner's handling of negotiations to sell Hartlepool to a local consortium after talks had stalled, and while he believes he will not be welcome at the Prestige Group Stadium, he will continue to support his team on the road.
Asked about the situation on TalkSPORT on Wednesday (8 August), Stelling, who revealed he was asleep when the story broke on Tuesday night, said: 'You know what? It didn't bother me, I'm not president of the football club anymore.
'It's my football club, I'm a lifelong supporter of that football club and if it came down to the fact that I travelled and stood with the Poolies, the Hartlepool supporters, wherever they are, then that's…
'I'd already bought my ticket – we're away to Yeovil on Saturday – I'd already bought my ticket to be with the fans, so I didn't get the issue or why Mr Singh wanted to raise it."
He continued: 'But of course, then it was leaked to the media and then of course it all spiralled and spiralled out of control. The other thing that I took offence to was in the statement he says in the unlikely event that I attend games independently.
'Well, I mean, last season I went to Aldershot, Eastleigh, Solihull, Southend, Sutton, Wealdstone, Woking, Dagenham and Redbridge, Ebbsfleet, Maidenhead and a few others as well, so, it's not so unlikely that I'll attend.'
In his letter – which was sent last month – Singh wrote: 'You may be aware from media coverage that Jeff Stelling has resigned as honorary president of Hartlepool United Football Club.
'As chairman of Hartlepool United Football Club, I would kindly and considerately ask that Mr Stelling is not provided with official HUFC dignitary spaces in your boardroom or equivalent for any Hartlepool United fixture at your home ground.
'In the unlikely event that Mr Stelling independently attends any Hartlepool United fixture at your home ground, I'd further request that you consider to seat Mr Stelling separately to any HUFC dignitaries or staff.'
In response to Singh's move, the town's MP Jonathan Brash has in turn written to National League clubs urging them to treat the popular broadcaster with the 'respect and courtesy that he has most certainly earned'.
Stelling, who confirmed he had introduced the agent of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to the club after they had expressed an interest in buying it before they opted to invest in Wrexham, has insisted he would be happy to discuss the situation with Singh.
He said: 'I haven't spoken to Mr Singh for months – it might even be a year – so this was just completely out of the blue. I just don't regard it as any big deal.
'I don't think I'd be welcome at home games – I'd probably have to go in disguise – but certainly at away games, I'm very happy to go with the fans, no problem whatsoever. I'd rather go with the fans, let's put it that way.
'I'll be at Yeovil on Saturday and I'll tell you what, I'll say it right now – if Mr Singh is there, I'll be happy to meet him and have a chat with him.'

OnlyFans star who quit football after being caught inhaling balloons - and banked more than £500k from raunchy platform - is back in the game

An OnlyFans star who quit football after being caught inhaling balloons has returned to the sport after signing for a new club. Madeleine Wright, 26, has signed for Chatham Town Women - who currently play in the National League which is the third tier of women's football in the UK. Posting to X, formerly Twitter, the club wrote: 'Welcome, Madelene. We are delighted to confirm the signing of forward Madelene Wright!' She has found a new club after a season-long stint at Chesham United last term saw her end the campaign without a new contract. That followed a spell with Leyton Orient once she was sacked by Charlton Women in 2019 after pictures of her off-field antics emerged. Wright had also previously been investigated by her former club Millwall after she filmed a friend holding a dog with its paws on the steering wheel while they were driving along a residential road - footage of which emerged in 2019. But she has now made a name for herself outside of football after signing up to OnlyFans She was seen sipping champagne from a bottle behind the wheel of her £31,500 modified Range Rover Evoque in a video that year. But she has managed to carve out a successful high-profile career for herself away from football. That has come in the form of being a content creator on OnlyFans - which she has undertaken since leaving Orient. It has seen her Instagram following grow to an enormous mark of 324,000 at the time this article was published. That comes as she has earnt at least £500,000 from OnlyFans since 2022 as she continues to take the internet by storm. While she admitted to having concerns about signing up to OnlyFans because it has earnt a reputation for allegedly showing pornography and purportedly allowing prostitutes to offer sex, Madeleine says she she feels she made the right call. Speaking to The Sun in 2022, she said: 'My main reason not to do it was the reputation it had. I didn't want to be associated with that kind of thing. 'But when you weigh up the pros and cons, and after doing it for a full year, I know I made the right decision. Wright was dismissed by Charlton after several damning videos emerged on social media 'In the first year I made in the ballpark of half a million pounds. I can't lie, it has completely changed my life. 'I was able to get my own place, I have been able to travel the world and have enjoyed a lot of luxurious things.' She also expressed her desire to become an entrepreneur and start her own business in order to prove her credentials outside of football.

New Wrexham signing U-turns on teammate he branded 'delusional' as comments addressed

Josh Windass once mocked Ollie Palmer's goalscoring claims, but has now praised him after the striker's heroics for Wrexham against Hull City in the Carabao Cup first round A new Wrexham signing has performed a sharp U-turn on a teammate he once labelled as "delusional". Josh Windass joined the Red Dragons on a free transfer following his mutual departure from Sheffield Wednesday in July. ‌ Shortly before the move, footage resurfaced on social media showing the forward taking aim at Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer. Speaking during an appearance on the Pitch Side podcast in February 2024, the 31-year-old declared he was "miles better" than Palmer, who has played a key role in the Welsh side's rise from the National League to the Championship. ‌ Windass made the statement after Palmer claimed that he could bag 20 goals a season in the Premier League if he turned out for Manchester City. He said: "Ollie Palmer said he'd get 20 goals for City, didn't he? It's absolutely delusional at the highest level. No offence to Ollie Palmer." ‌ When questioned about whether he could score a few goals in the top flight himself, he replied: "But I'm miles better than Ollie Palmer. If I was getting 20 goals for Man City every year, I'd be playing for Man City. He [Palmer] doesn't even get 15 [for Wrexham]." The remarks could have caused awkwardness between Windass and Palmer following his arrival at Wrexham. However, he now appears to have changed his mind on Palmer after he came to Phil Parkinson 's side's rescue during their Carabao Cup win over Hull City on Tuesday night. Wrexham looked to be heading out of the competition as they trailed the Tigers 3-1 in the dying embers of the first round tie at the Racecourse Ground. However, two late goals from Palmer took the game to penalties, with the home team emerging as 5-3 victors from the shootout. Posting on Instagram after the match, Windass shared an image of Palmer celebrating one of his goals, along with the caption: "Maybe you would score 20 for Man City after all @olliep9_" His teammate took the olive branch in good humour, responding with a series of laughing emojis and a heart, before adding: "Paz law baby." Several other Wrexham players joined the fun, with former Premier League wing-back James McClean writing: "Hands off Pep." Meanwhile, a supporter replied: "Ollie's win percentage for Wrexham is better than Pep's for City." ‌ Palmer has established himself as a fan favourite at Wrexham following his switch from Wimbledon in January 2022 for a then club-record fee of £300,000. His tally of 17 goals proved crucial in the club's promotion from the National League in 2023, where they secured the title with a remarkable 111 points haul. The 33-year-old also played his part in their successive promotions from League Two and League One. However, Palmer's goalscoring form declined significantly last season, netting just three times in 27 appearances. ‌ Parkinson dropped him from the starting XI during the second half of the campaign after bringing in attacking reinforcements in January. The manager recently revealed he had held talks with Palmer about going out on loan before the summer transfer window closes. Only last week, he looked almost certain to be excluded from Wrexham's 25-man squad for this season. But last night's performance may have given Parkinson food for thought after his first choice no. 9, Kieffer Moore, was forced off with an ankle injury during Saturday's 2-1 Championship opening day defeat at Southampton. Parkinson was full of praise for Palmer after the win over Hull as he told BBC Sport Wales: "I'm so pleased for him because he's been an iconic player for us over the last three or four years and the supporters love him. ‌ "When we made the decision to bring players in in January, I explained why I felt we needed to add an extra impetus into the team – and it worked because we got promotion and the two up front did really well. "But he kept working on the training pitch and kept contributing in the dressing room. I've always said to him that you've got as much respect for that as what you've done in terms of as a player." He added: "Of course, he wants to stay and be a part of it and we'll see how we go on in the next few weeks of the transfer window. I don't think Ollie could have done much more tonight, and that impact from the bench we've seen over many years is so important." Simon Jordan flies off the handle after Emma Raducanu asked for crying child to be ejected

After suggesting a crying baby should be ejected from her Cincinnati Open match against Aryna Sabalenka, talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has come to Emma Raducanu's defence Simon Jordan unleashed an extraordinary rant in which he called for tennis and other sports to introduce age restrictions after Emma Raducanu asked for a crying child to be ejected from her Cincinnati Open match. ‌ The world No. 33 was midway through her third-round match against Aryna Sabalenka when the infant could be heard from the stands at a critical point in the clash. ‌ Raducanu was serving in the eighth game of a titanic encounter at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre when the controversial scenes unfolded. The 22-year-old gestured towards the audience as she pleaded with the umpire, who fired back by asking: "It's a child. Do you want me to send the child out of the stadium?" ‌ Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka was magnanimous after winning the match 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5), setting up a fourth-round duel against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. But talkSPORT pundit Jordan was left with a sour taste in his mouth after watching the exchange and launched into an angry rant. "Well, you can make it appropriate," the former Crystal Palace chairman said passionately, responding to host Jim White suggesting that sports events such as these can't ban children. "If they've got a baby inside an auditorium: A, I don't think it's particularly responsible parenting. And B, it's not reflective of the environment a child should probably be in! "And C, you've then got the distraction that tennis player, or anyone playing an individual sport that requires a degree of concentration, is going to be affected by. "So it's not me being some horrid, Wackford Squeers from some Charles Dickens book. It's me looking at it going, 'It's ridiculous. I wouldn't bring a young child. Theatres don't allow people to bring young children into auditoriums when actors are in the middle of acting so a kid can scream out and spit his dummy across the room.'" Jordan, who is known for being controversial and having strong opinions, then doubled down by reiterating his view that it's not appropriate for infant children to be present at such sporting events. However, White took a far more lenient view of the matter and laughed off Jordan's protest before calling for a softer approach. ‌ "You can take a baby on a plane," came White's reply, suggesting it would be silly to have varying rules for different public settings. However, the Scot could only chuckle when Jordan responded: "I don't suppose the pilot would want the baby in the cockpit, would he?" White continued to present the argument that it would be foolish to suggest babies be barred from attending major sporting events. But Jordan continued his tirade, adding: "I think it's ridiculous. Okay, bring [a baby] to snooker then. A screaming kid in snooker. Judd Trump leaning down to make [a shot]...'WAAAAHHHH [mimicking a baby's cry]!' That would be great, wouldn't it? "Bring them to the boxing, so they can watch blood and [thunder]. Get them to bare knuckle fighting, so they can get involved with that too!" ‌ White brought up the example of young children regularly attending football matches, to which Jordan made the counterpoint that it's not the same as bringing a baby. He went on to suggest there should be some form of age cut-off for certain events, with tennis among those disciplines that require more concentration by an individual athlete. Raducanu, meanwhile, will have to lick her wounds and go again after narrowly losing to Sabalenka in the action-packed match. The Brit will now head to the US Open and be feeling confident despite the loss, having put in some impressive performances since Wimbledon.
