Detroit Tigers' Javier Báez surpasses Mike Trout in second update of All-Star voting
The Detroit Tigers have three position players tracking to advance to Phase 2 of fan voting for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game: second baseman Gleyber Torres, outfielder Riley Greene and outfielder Javier Báez.
All three of them — yes, even Báez — could start for the American League on July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta, joining likely AL starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.

The second ballot update was released by MLB on Monday, June 23.
Phase 1 of fan voting ends Thursday, June 26.

Fans can vote for position players (but not pitchers) on MLB.com.
There are two phases of fan voting for the All-Star Game.
In Phase 1, the position player with the most overall votes automatically earns a starting spot, which will be outfielder Aaron Judge for the AL team. The top two vote-getters at each position, plus the top six outfielders, advance to the second round. In Phase 2, all vote totals reset and fans select the remaining starters from the smaller pool of players who advanced. The winners of the second-round vote will be announced July 2.

The full All-Star roster becomes official July 6.

In the second update, Báez has received 901,969 votes and surpassed Mike Trout (889,474) and Steven Kwan (810,746) for third place in fan voting among AL outfielders, trailing only Judge (2,699,483) and Greene (1,370,098). In the first update, Báez trailed both Trout and Kwan on the ballot.
Báez made the All-Star Game in 2018 and 2019. He is hitting .290 with nine home runs in 66 games in 2025, posting an .801 OPS. The 32-year-old has started 28 games in center field, 17 games at shortstop, 14 games at third base and one game at second base.
'If I get to the All-Star Game, I'm honestly going to be happy," Báez said June 17. "If not, I'm going to get my rest for the second half."

Meanwhile, Torres has extended his margin as the top vote-getter among AL second basemen, with 1,133,888 votes — way ahead of Jackson Holliday (806,113) and Jose Altuve (795,123). Additionally, Greene has maintained his status as the second-highest vote-getter among AL outfielders, behind Judge.
"If I go, it will be really, really special," Torres, an All-Star in 2018 and 2019, said June 14. "Hopefully, I can make it. I know many, many guys from this team are going."
Here's an important note: If an outfielder is the AL's leading vote-getter, which will be the case for Judge, only the next four outfield finalists will advance to Phase 2. Right now, that would be Greene, Báez, Trout and Kwan — followed by Cody Bellinger (712,153) and Kerry Carpenter (664,318).
That means Carpenter has three days to surpass both Bellinger and Kwan to join Greene and Báez in Phase 2, which seems unlikely to happen.

The Tigers have Torres, Greene and Báez all but guaranteed to advance to Phase 2 of voting, with five other players on the outside looking in: designated hitter Colt Keith (by 45,613 votes), Carpenter (by 146,428 votes), third baseman Zach McKinstry (by 151,861 votes), catcher Dillon Dingler (by 155,570 votes) and first baseman Spencer Torkelson (by 321,291 votes).

At this point, Keith (363,723) is the most likely to make a last-second comeback in the Phase 1 balloting. He needs to surpass both Brent Rooker (396,290) and Ben Rice (409,336) among AL designated hitters.

Shota Imanaga to start for the Chicago Cubs on Thursday; Michael Fulmer called up for the bullpen
ST. LOUIS — For the last seven weeks, the Chicago Cubs have navigated a rotation without their top two starting pitchers. While they won't be getting Justin Steele back following season-ending elbow surgery, left-hander Shota Imanaga is slated to rejoin the rotation Thursday when the Cubs activate him from the injured list to start against the St. Louis Cardinals to cap the teams' first series of the year. Imanaga had a 2.82 ERA in eight starts before landing on the IL and will give the Cubs a boost. Advertisement Since Imanaga strained his left hamstring May 4 in Milwaukee, the Cubs have gone from 7 games above .500 to 15 over entering Monday's series at Busch Stadium. Collectively, the Cubs' starters produced a 4.46 ERA while Imanaga has been out, which includes the bulk outings by Ben Brown, Colin Rea and Cade Horton in the three games that had openers. It puts the group on the edge of the bottom third in ERA during that stretch, and their total 1.9 fWAR is 24th among starters. Manager Craig Counsell was most impressed with one element of his team's management of Imanaga's absence: the rest of the rotation made all their starts. 'I don't know if health seems like a compliment, but those guys taking the ball for the last seven weeks and staying healthy was critical for us and really important,' Counsell said Monday. 'You never feel out of the woods when it comes to health or when it comes to depth or things like that, but us getting through this stretch and our starters taking their turn every time was massively important. 'And we lost our off days, we all know that in terms of the schedule and had rougher weather and all that stuff, so they've done a really nice job of that.' Padres star Tatis sues Big League Advance in attempt to get out of future earnings deal
Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. filed a lawsuit Monday against Big League Advance in an attempt to void the future earnings contract he signed as a 17-year-old minor leaguer that could cost him $34 million. The lawsuit, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, accuses BLA of using predatory tactics to lure him into an 'investment deal' that was actually an illegal loan. BLA misrepresented itself to Tatis, hiding its unlicensed status and pushing him into loan terms banned by California's consumer protection laws, the suit alleges. Attorney Robert Hertzberg said the suit also seeks public injunctive relief to protect young athletes from being lured into such deals. Hertzberg said Tatis received $2 million up front in exchange for 10% of future earnings. Tatis signed a $340 million, 14-year contract in February 2021. Hertzberg said Tatis would also be on the hook for future earnings from any subsequent contract he might sign, unless the deal is voided. 'I'm fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream and hoping to provide a better life for their family," Tatis said in a statement provided by a publicist. "I want to help protect those young players who don't yet know how to protect themselves from these predatory lenders and illegal financial schemes — kids' focus should be on their passion for baseball, not dodging shady business deals.' Tatis, a son of the former big league infielder, declined further comment before Monday night's game against the Washington Nationals. Hertzberg said that even though Tatis signed the deal in his native Dominican Republic, he is covered by California consumer protection laws. BLA declined comment. "California lawmakers have put in place serious, straightforward protections against predatory financial activity, but BLA has still disregarded our laws to pursue a business model built on prohibited, deceptive and abusive practices,' said Hertzberg, a former speaker of the California State Assembly and majority leader of the California Senate. Tatis has blossomed into one of the game's biggest stars, although he's been dogged by injuries and an 80-game PED suspension handed down by MLB in 2022. 2026 4-star Edge shuts down his recruitment, explains why he committed to Texas A&M
Texas A&M coach Mike Elko has built an incredible foundation heading into this second season at the helm, as he has continued to prove that he is as good, or even a better recruiter compared to former head coach Jimbo Fisher this offseason after landing five elite commitments over the past week in the 2026 recruiting class. Leading into this week, nearly half a dozen of the program's 19 commits have shut down their recruitment, including five-star edge Tristian Givens, who committed to the Aggies on Saturday. This trend started with four-star running back Jonathan Hatton, followed by four-star wide receiver Aaron Gregory, and four-star tight end Caleb Tafua quickly following his lead. Since then, one of the program's earliest commits, four-star edge Jordan Carter, also shut down his future visits. On Monday, fellow four-star edge/linebacker Samu Moala became the next important defender in the cycle to shut things down, as he will sign with the Aggies as soon as the Early Signing period on December 4. Moala has been the subject of several potential rumors over the last couple of weeks, as UCLA and Washington have attempted to flip the versatile prospect. During his recent interview with Rivals recruiting insider Adam Gorney at the Rivals Five-Star event in Indianapolis, Moala explained why he chose to shut down his recruitment and stick with Texas A&M: "Very hard decision, but I committed there because I want to play with the best and play against the best in the SEC" Moala stated. "It felt like home; I went there (College Station) this past weekend, and they made it feel like home, they answered all my questions that needed to be answered, and I'm fully committed." Moala also revealed that staying at edge with the Aggies was a big part of his decision, as UCLA wanted him to play linebacker at the next level. After praising Texas A&M's culture during his official visit, Moala also stated that he is expected to play the Jack position on defense, with an emphasis on rushing the passer and dropping back in coverage to blanket tight ends.
