The bitcoin price, up 50% since its April lows, has topped the previous all-time high it set in January ahead of U.S. president Donald Trump's election, with data showing a $6 trillion earthquake could be about to hit the market.
Now, as a Wall Street giant suddenly flips from gold to bitcoin, traders are closely watching the bond market for signs the Federal Reserve will have to step in—branded 'the big print' by some bitcoin price bulls who are predicting the return of quantitative easing.

Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell has kept the Fed on the sidelines as he waits to see the impact ... More of Donald Trump's global trade tariffs on the economy—with the bitcoin price bouncing back along with the stock market in recent weeks.
This week, investors began pushing back against U.S. president Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful' tax-cutting bill, driving yields on benchmark 30-year Treasuries to near-two decade highs of 5.1%.
Trump has been trying to drum up support for his massive tax and spending bill, which cleared a procedural hurdle in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Wednesday.
Last week, rating agency Moody's sent shockwaves through markets when it stripped the U.S. of its top triple-A rating, following S&P Global Ratings in 2011 and Fitch Ratings in 2023, as consecutive administrations have failed to get a handle on spiraling U.S. debt.
'The view is that, with this bill, Trump is playing with fire with the deficit,' Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING, told Reuters.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates Trump's bill will add $3.8 trillion to the U.S.'s $36 trillion in debt over the next decade, taking it to an eye-watering $40 trillion.
Last week, Charlie Garcia, the founder of wealth network R360, wrote in a piece for MarketWatch that recent well-telegraphed Fed Treasury purchases of around $45 billion amounted to 'stealth easing."
'If the Fed quietly keeps hitting the QE [quantative easing] button, bitcoin might become the investment equivalent of a midnight convenience-store burrito—volatile but satisfying,' Garcia wrote, adding that others such as pro-bitcoin financial analyst Lyn Alden have played down the significance of the Fed's bond purchases.
Garcia's comments were seized on by the bullish bitcoin and crypto crowd who believe it's the beginning of 'the big print' that they expect to send bitcoin, gold and other scarce assets sharply higher as Federal Reserve is forced to restart its money printer.

The bitcoin price has surged to a record high this week, topping $110,000 and spurring a flood of ... More bullish bitcoin price predictions.
"This is a ticking time bomb, swept under the rug," Josh Mandell, who claims to be a retired Wall Street trader that previously worked at the legendary Salomon Brothers Wall Street giant, posted to X, adding, "the big print is coming."
Mandell gained a huge following on the platform after late last year correctly predicting the bitcoin price would hit a certain level in March 2025.
Others have also pointed to bitcoin's price performance following what some have characterised as a 'weak' or 'lackluster' U.S. Treasury auction as a bullish signal for bitcoin going forward.
'We firmly believe bitcoin is increasingly decoupling from its correlation to risk assets and beginning to behave more like an independent, reliable asset allocation, particularly in times of uncertainty,' Edward Carroll, head of global markets and corporate finance at MHC Digital Group, said in emailed comments, adding, "the fact that bitcoin rallied overnight despite a weak U.S. Treasury auction and poor equity performance may be an indicator of this shift.'
Carroll joins other hyper-bullish bitcoin price predictions, forecasting that the bitcoin price will hit 'reach at least $160,000 by the end of 2025 and $1 million by 2030" as bitcoin's 'fixed supply dynamic and growing demand [drive] the price higher.'

Factbox-Breakdown of U.S. tariffs on China since Trump's first term

BEIJING (Reuters) -Billions of dollars of Chinese goods have been impacted by additional U.S. tariffs since 2018, initially under the first Donald Trump presidency and later under the Biden administration. Returning to the White House this year, Trump has imposed even more duties on China. The U.S. tariffs range from those imposed under Section 301 of its trade act due to what Washington claims are unfair Chinese trade practices, to duties under Section 232 levied for national security reasons. This year, Trump has imposed another 20% levies on all Chinese goods, saying Beijing has not done enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. So-called reciprocal tariffs, under which the U.S. will match duties imposed by other countries, have also been levied in a bid to rebalance trade flows. Below are the U.S. tariffs on China effective as of June 12, 2025: Tariff Rate Products Effective date Reciprocal 10% All Paused for 90 days until Aug 10, 2025 Fentanyl 20% All Mar 4, 2025 Section Up to List 1: Pharmaceuticals, July 6, 2018 301 25% iron and steel, aluminium, vehicles and aircraft, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus and more. List 4A: Prepared Feb 14, 2020 foodstuffs, beverages, mineral products, fertilizers, footwear, wood products, ceramic products, glass, textiles, precious and base metals, machinery and mechanical appliances, vehicles, aircraft, vessels, art, antiques and more. In September 2019, the U.S. imposed 15% tariffs on more than $120 billion of Chinese goods under Section 301, which it then halved to 7.5% less than six months later. The 25% U.S. tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods under the earlier List 1-3 remain unchanged. In September 2024, the U.S. Trade Representative under the Biden administration announced additional tariffs of 25-100% on 14 product groups following a four-year review of the Section 301 tariff actions. The levies were imposed on strategic Chinese sectors or sectors where the United States has made significant domestic investments. Additional tariffs on goods under Section 301: Effective date EVs 100% Sep 27, 2024 Solar cells, syringes and 50% needles Non-lithium-ion battery parts, 25% lithium-ion electrical vehicle batteries, other critical minerals, ship-to-shore cranes, steel and aluminium products, facemasks Semiconductors 50% Jan 1, 2025 Lithium-ion non-electrical 25% Jan 1, 2026 vehicle batteries, medical gloves, natural graphite, permanent magnets In addition to the above duties, the first Trump administration in 2018 imposed a range of tariffs under Section 232 aimed at restricting goods deemed a threat to national security, including all aluminium and steel imports, shutting most Chinese suppliers out of the U.S. market. Residential solar installer Sunnova files for bankruptcy, plans to sell and wind down operations

This story was originally published on Utility Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Utility Dive newsletter. Sunnova, the second-largest installer of third-party owned residential solar installations by market share, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday. Although the company's customer base and revenue continued to grow, rising interest rates, inflation, tariffs and other factors had eroded the company's profit margins, rendering it unable to pay its debts, President and CEO Paul Mathews said in the bankruptcy filings. Sunnova plans to sell off 'substantially all' of the company's assets and wind-down any remaining operations following the sale, Mathews said. Sunnova said in a Monday announcement following the filing that it will accept bids on its assets and business operations for the next 45 days; after the sale, the company plans to wind-down any remaining operations and close, Mathews said in court filings. The company has already agreed to sell some assets to a holding company that has received $15 million in financing from global investment firm ATLAS SP Partners, and has also agreed to sell other assets from its new homes business unit to builder Lennar Homes for $16 million, according to the company announcement. 'Today's actions mark a critical step towards securing a value-maximizing outcome for Sunnova's stakeholders,' Mathews said in a statement Monday. 'Throughout this process, maintaining continuity of service for our customers is our top priority as we work to secure a long-term solution for our business operations under new ownership.' Matthews said he was 'incredibly grateful to our dedicated Sunnova team for their hard work and commitment. We have built an innovative power provider, and I continue to believe deeply in the future of our industry and the promise of residential solar and storage.' According to the chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, Sunnova faced 'critically tight liquidity' and expected to run out of cash this April or May if it was unable to secure additional financing. However, the company's efforts to find new lenders earlier this year were unsuccessful, a failure Mathews partially attributed in court documents to uncertainty created by Trump's executive order to freeze spending authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act. Although the courts have paused the implementation of that executive order and restored payouts under the act, the uncertainty it created meant lenders were unwilling to provide Sunnova with additional financing, Mathews said. He also said that although Sunnova grew its revenues and quadrupled its customer count between 2020-2024, market factors such as above-target inflation, prolonged high interest rates and tariffs had diminished the company's profitability. The company attempted to cut costs and free up funds to make its growing debt service payments by focusing on lower-risk installations, and by 2025 had shrunk year-over-year net losses by more than 10%, Mathews said. The company also installed new leadership, including Mathews, and laid off 50% of its workforce earlier this year. However, the new strategy was unable to make up for its previous policy of aggressive spending and borrowing in pursuit of rapid growth. By early 2025 the company was unable to pay its dealer network, which caused its contractors to stop work on projects that were in process and further curtailed the company's incoming cash flows, Mathews said.
