Liam Neeson stars in ‘The Naked Gun' reboot: Trailer, release date, and first look
Paramount has officially released the first trailer for the highly anticipated The Naked Gun reboot, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's iconic detective from the original franchise.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer (The Lonely Island), the reboot blends absurdist comedy, high-energy action, and nostalgic humor, including a nod to O.J. Simpson from the original trilogy.
The trailer, unveiled at CinemaCon 2025, showcases Neeson's comedic transformation, including a scene where he disguises himself as a schoolgirl with a lollipop before taking down a gang of criminals. Fans can expect a fresh take on the 1988 cult classic, which was celebrated for its over-the-top humor and slapstick action.
Produced by Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and Erica Huggins, the film follows in the footsteps of the original trilogy, which includes The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988), The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991), and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994).
Originally planned as a reboot starring Ed Helms, the project has been in development since 2013. In 2021, McFarlane took over to rework the film, leading to its current iteration. The Naked Gun reboot is set to hit theaters nationwide on August 1, 2025.

Lilo & Stitch' tops North America box office again

So far, its worldwide take is at a whopping $610 million, Exhibitor Relations said. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – the latest, and ostensibly last, in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series based on a 1960s TV show – took second place with $27.3 million in the United States and Canada. The Paramount film has made another $231 million overseas, which should help offset its massive production budget, reportedly at $400 million. Debuting in a disappointing third place was Sony's Karate Kid: Legends, a sequel featuring Ralph Macchio – – the star of the original 1984 classic – – and action flick icon Jackie Chan, along with Ben Wang in the title role. It made $21 million at the domestic box office and another $26 million overseas. "Legends is trying to invigorate the story with a new Kid – – again – – but business is not strong," said David A Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. In fourth place was Warner Bros and New Line's horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines, at $10.8 million. And another horror film, Bring Her Back, debuted in fifth place with $7.1 million. "This is a very good opening for an original horror movie that cost only $4.5 million to make," said Gross.
