Carl Mullan 'buzzing' over Rose of Tralee role as Will Leahy steps down

RTÉ 2FM presenter Carl Mullan said he's "absolutely buzzing" to take over from veteran broadcaster Will Leahy as the Rose of Tralee's MC.
After 20 years in the iconic role, the RTÉ Gold host said he would "do it forever" but believes it's time to say goodbye. Daithí Ó Sé will remain at the helm of the show, while Carl will take over the job of announcing the roses and presenting social media content.
A spokesperson for RTÉ said: "After two memorable decades as Master of Ceremonies, Will Leahy is hanging up his microphone. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Will for his long-standing contribution to the Rose of Tralee Festival down through the years.
"We are delighted to welcome 2FM Breakfast Show presenter Carl Mullan as the new Master of Ceremonies. Carl is no stranger to the Rose of Tralee, having served as an escort in 2016." Taking to social media, Will said he's not leaving the long-standing show for other projects. Will Leahy is stepping down as the Rose of Tralee MC after 20 years (Image: RTÉ)
He added: "I'd keep doing it forever, but I've been in the job 20 years, which is an eternity in the presenting world. I am going to miss the annual mad summer camp that I have been honoured to be a part of for all these years. I started with Ray D'Arcy in 2005 - yes, that long ago.
"Myself and Dáithí have soldiered together for 15 years, and in the past few years Kathryn (Thomas) has added greatly to the team. So to the best crew of tv professionals, the Rose team and, of course, the 576 Roses that I have met, thanks for letting me be part of telly history."
Speaking alongside his 2FM Breakfast co-hosts Roz Purcell and Aisling Bonner, Carl said he is "absolutely buzzing" with his new job. He added: "On the night, I'm the person who's responsible for introducing all 32 Roses on stage, telling you about them, where they're from."
The Rose of Tralee will air on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player on August 18 and 19.

Ryan Tubridy responds to speculation he will run for the Irish Presidency

Ex-RTÉ star Ryan Tubridy has responded to messages from fans asking if he will be running for the Irish Presidency. The father-of-two has confirmed he will not be running for the Áras this year. The presenter, who currently hosts his own mid-morning show on Virgin Radio UK, broke his silence on the matter, confirming he wasn't planning on running for the gig. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the Dubliner said: 'In answer to many Insta questions, two things I'm NOT doing this weekend: 1) Going to Oasis. 2) Running for President. He added: 'Coffee and crossword for now.' Alongside the comments, Ryan shared a screenshot of a message from a follower which read: 'Come on… run for President!!!! You know middle-aged women vote in Ireland and you know you want to!' Ryan opened up about how tough the Presidential election is in Ireland, saying he is "baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage". "As someone who has interviewed the last three presidents (and their rivals in the various elections) I am repeatedly taken aback at the level of acrimony, cruelty and let's face it, prurience that goes with the task of running for the Áras," the former RTÉ star wrote in the Mail on Sunday. "The bizarre thing about it is that as soon as the president is elected, the mob stops as if switched off with a button. The President is generally respected and afforded a dignity that tends to go with the ceremonial nature of the august position. "I continue to be baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage. I understand that there must be scrutiny and that the campaign is one long job interview but is there a need for all that frothing at the mouth? "In the past few days, Mairead McGuinness withdrew her candidacy for health reasons (and I wish her a speedy recovery). For the other candidates (real or imagined) it was gloves off before they barely opened their mouths. The Irish Times went for Tony Holohan as soon as he suggested that his private polling had him at a healthy 15 per cent." The race to the Áras is set to take place in the coming weeks ahead of Michael D Higgins' retirement from the role. President Michael D Higgins will be replaced later this year Among the names hoping for a nomination include Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley, Catherine Connolly, Bertie Ahern, Gareth Sheridan and Mary Lou McDonald. Last week, Mairead McGuinness was forced to pull out of the Presidential Race on medical advice with Catherine Connolly now favourite to win the vote. A presidential election is expected towards the end of October, as it must take place in the 60 days before the term of current president Michael D Higgins ends on November 11. To be eligible to run, a candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older. They must be nominated either by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or at least four local authorities. ‘Croke Park was shaking' – Famous faces and fans react to ‘unbelievable' first Oasis gig

The reunion tour, which sees the band play their first Irish dates since just before their dramatic split in 2009, will continue in Dublin tonight. The brothers dedicated Stand By Me to their mother Peggy, who is from Charlestown, Co Mayo, while they played a setlist of fan favourites complete with Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger. Fans have reacted to the gig online in the aftermath, with one saying: 'Until the day I die, I will say you will never see a better band. No one could come back after 16 years and do what Oasis have done. The best ever.' Many described the band as 'the greatest of all time' as they captured the sold-out crowd singing along to the songs, with the final song – Champagne Supernova – offering an 'unforgettable ending'. Another crowd, who were unlucky in the scramble to secure tickets, gathered outside the stadium to sing along. Podcaster Vogue Williams shared clips of a packed Croke Park as she declared her love for Liam Gallagher during Live Forever. "My life is made… I love Liam FOREVER,' she wrote on Instagram. RTÉ star Carl Mullan also secured tickets to the hotly-anticipated reunion tour alongside his wife Aisling, admitting the mood of the stadium during one track made him emotional. "Up Rock 'n' Roll, up joy, up Oasis, up family, up the upper Cusack, up Ireland,' he captioned a series of pictures from the stadium last night. Sharing a video of the crowd during 'Roll with It', he said: 'Of all the songs that made me cry last night, it was this. Just seeing the place absolutely heaving and having such craic was unbelievable. ADVERTISEMENT "Croke Park was shaking (no joke, going to get a drink and you could feel the stand bouncing, not sure if this always happens at gigs but it felt mental). "Enjoy if you're going tonight, the best atmosphere I've ever experienced at Croke Park for a gig.' Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly, who yesterday morning indicated that he will 'reconsider' his presidential bid after party candidate Mairead McGuiness withdrew from the race, was also among the crowd last night. "Oasis in Croke Park. Rocking! Geniuses at play!!' he said.

RTE bosses have eyes on Doireann replacement for DWTS

RTÉ bosses are considering putting 2FM presenter Laura Fox under the glare of the glitterball spotlight as a co-host on the next season of Dancing with the Stars. Although RTÉ has not yet made a final decision on whether or not to proceed with a ninth series of the show, sources this weekend predicted the ratings hit will be returning to TV screens next January. And they indicated Montrose chiefs are 'eyeing up' Fox as a potential replacement for co-presenter Doireann Garrihy, who is preparing for the arrival of her first child. And sources said producers have already identified the popular Galway girl as a stand-in for Garrihy. A station insider told 'Word is RTÉ and [production company] Shinawhil are eyeing up Laura to host Dancing [with the Stars] alongside Jennifer. Garrihy and her new husband, podcaster Mark Meighan, announced in April that they are expecting their first child. Photo: Instagram/Doireann Garrihy. 'Laura really fits the bill. She's lively, bubbly, fun and she has really proved herself as a solid TV presenter on shows like Ireland's Fittest Family. 'She has also been a contestant on Dancing, so she can bring that experience of being on the dance floor when she is talking to contestants after their dance.' 'So Laura really is an all-rounder and the perfect fit to take over from Doireann while she is on maternity leave.' Laura Fox. Pic: Instagram It has also been speculated that Westlife star and former DWTS host Nicky Byrne could be in line to make a surprise return. 'There's also talk of Nicky making a comeback, but Laura is more likely to land the gig,' the source added. RTÉ did not respond to queries from Extra this weekend but previously said that while the ninth series of Dancing with the Stars has not yet been confirmed, the 'commissioning process will take place in due course'. Fox's fellow 2FM presenter Garrihy and her new husband, podcaster Mark Meighan, announced in April that they are expecting their first child. The couple, who tied the knot last year, shared the news on Instagram with photos holding their baby scan. The snap was accompanied by the caption: 'We are beside ourselves with joy. Here's to the greatest chapter yet.' A pic from the DWTS final. Pic: Doireann Garrihy/Instagram Ahead of their new arrival, Garrihy and Meighan are enjoying their final months as a twosome, soaking up the sun on holiday in Spain. The 2FM presenter posted a video montage to her followers on social media this week with the caption: 'One last bit of galavanting [sic] as a duo (please god). So grateful and so excited for the coming weeks of working, nesting, and prepping!' Garrihy also shared pictures of her showing off her radiant pregnancy glow, and others of the couple laughing over dinner.
