‘Stellar Blade' Crushes PlayStation PC Record With 183,000 Concurrents

Stellar Blade SHIFT UP Finally having broken free of PlayStation exclusivity, 2024 actioner Stellar Blade has absolutely dominated all other former PS exclusives that eventually headed to PC. As we speak, now having launched in all regions, Stellar Blade appears to have peaked at 183,830 players on Steam. Great by any metric, but especially in the context of other PlayStation PC releases. This is double the previous single-player record-holder, the 77,000 of Ghost of Tsushima, and as we head to the weekend, who knows if it could eventually triple that. Here's a list of the other major PC releases from Sony: Stellar Blade SHIFTUP The difference is that some of these are years later rather than just over a year like Stellar Blade, but there's just no question this is a stunning launch from SHIFTUP's game. Although on Sony's end, they do not own this IP, and the future of the franchise's partnership with PlayStation is nebulous. A sequel has been confirmed, likely for 2027, according to a recent SHIFTUP presentation. The major exception to this PlayStation list is if we break out of single-player only games and include Helldivers 2, which dwarfs them all with its 458,709 peak. Even now, after a big recent update, it's still doing 100,000 players a night, and it has a bigger playerbase on PC than on PlayStation. Stellar Blade announced 1 million sales in a month after release, and I imagine we may be in for some sales news shortly from this PC release, which is clearly going great. The game is unsurprisingly the #1 seller on Steam right now. A new content pack dropped with this port, but besides that, I have to believe that a recent free demo of the game convinced many to pick up the full copy. As for me, I highly recommend the game. It was one of my favorites of 2024, and I sunk 50 hours into two playthroughs (NG+ is very well-handled in the game). Since I put it down, the game has added some gameplay updates, things like photo mode and what has to be approaching 100 new outfits by now (I'm not even sure that's an exaggeration). Above all else, it's just a really fun action game, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Give it a try yourself if you didn't snag it on PlayStation. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Luke's ready to tango with Carrie-Anne Moss' spy in 'Fubar' S2

NEW YORK, June 12 (UPI) -- Terminator and True Lies icon Arnold Schwarzenegger says Luke Brunner, the CIA operative he plays in Fubar, has to face his past if he wants to stop a villain (Carrie-Anne Moss) from destroying the world in Season 2. "It was great to have the family back together again and it was great, also, to have Carrie-Anne (Moss) come in and be part of that family and we had a wonderful time in Fubar Season No. 2," Schwarzenegger, 77, told UPI in a Zoom interview Tuesday. "The writers and the showrunners ramped up the action. They ramped up the comedy, the drama and all of that stuff," he said. "It's a fantastic job in a fantastic project to work on and to be up there in Canada and to work with such talented people has been a really great pleasure." Season 1 ended with Tally Brunner (Fabiana Udenio) discovering both her ex-husband Luke and their daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) are secret agents who have been lying to her for years about their globe-trotting adventures. After a dangerous mission goes sideways, Luke, Tally and Emma, as well as Luke's team -- Barry (Milan Carter), Roo (Fortune Feimster) and Aldon (Travis Van Winkle) -- end up in the witness protection program, sharing a house with Tally's miserable former fiance Donnie (Andy Buckley) and Emma's ex, Carter, (Jay Baruchel). Luke never liked keeping his identity a secret from his loved ones, but he did so because of the sensitivity of his missions and his determination to keep his family safe from the bad guys he was constantly running up against. "There's stuff that even I cannot have my teammates know about," Schwarzenegger said about Luke's need to be mysterious. "So, everyone has to keep a secret from everyone else. I, of course, can be as big a spy and successful a spy in the outside world, but, when I come back home, I have the same kind of problems as I always had." After decades of death-defying missions, Luke is finally ready to give it all up and relax, but his country always seems to need him. "Every time I come home, I say, 'OK, now I'm going to retire and I'm going to go and take my wife on a boat ride around the world,'" Schwarzenegger said. "Then, some incident happens again and I get pulled out of retirement and I'm back again on the job. So, that has been going on and the same thing is going on in Fubar 2, except it is more intense, more action and more comedy." The Matrix and Jessica Jones actress Moss, 57, joins the cast for Season 2 as Greta Nelson, Luke's nemesis and former lover. "She's just off her marbles. She's so fun. She's so out there. She's, obviously, very, very stealthy and incredible at what she does, being a spy," Moss said. "She also has a bit of insanity to her and has got nothing to lose, really," the actress added. "She loves what she does and she's in love with Luke and I loved playing her." Greta is over-the-top in the best possible ways, she noted. "There was nothing that was too big, I think, in playing her," Moss said. "I love to play those kinds of characters where nothing is off the table. You can just kind of go all the way." Schwarzenegger described Greta as an "old love interest that I have known for decades that helped me bring down the Berlin Wall and bring down communism." "Now all of a sudden, we pick it up again, decades later. We're different people. I still work for the same government, but she works for a different villain. And, so, this is how this relationship begins," he explained. Moss was thrilled when she read the scripts and found most of her scenes were with Schwarzenegger. "Once, I said 'yes' to it, I couldn't wait to meet him. I just had this feeling that we were going to really get along well and we did," she recalled. "We had so much fun rehearsing for our dance number and practicing the fights and working out in the gym and then having a meal or being on the set and doing our scenes and then sitting, having a coffee." She said she enjoyed watching how Schwarzenegger captivated the cast and crew with stories from his long Hollywood career. "I could sit for hours, listening to them. He's just a joy to be around. From the moment I said, 'yes,' I just knew it was going to be a great experience and it really was," Moss added. Asked how the action sequences of Fubar Season 2 could possibly top those in the first season, Schwarzenegger replied: "You always can top it, but it's not so much to do with me, it has to do with the writing and they did a really fantastic job."

Apple's Game App on iPhone vs. Microsoft's ROG Xbox Ally: The Real Winners Are Gamers

At WWDC 2025, Apple showed off plenty of changes in its preview for software upgrades due out later this year, but alongside visual shifts like Liquid Glass, the company also debuted a new Games app designed to be a hub for downloaded games. It's a continued push for iPhone, iPad and Mac owners to play and connect with others that comes as other gaming companies shift their strategies -- most notably, Apple announced its Games app days after Microsoft revealed its own ROG Xbox Ally, a powerful handheld that crams PC parts into a smaller handheld system. Ultimately, both approaches play to the strengths of each company and shore up weaknesses. Microsoft doesn't have a mobile phone user base, so it's leaning into gaming-dedicated devices that provide a more conventional gaming experience. Apple is trying to make the iPhone more user-friendly for gaming by offering a space for a personalized library of your games, easier ways to play games with others online and making it more convenient to wirelessly connect third-party controllers or promote phone-attaching controllers like the Backbone. Microsoft/Screenshot by CNET The clear winners are gamers, who are being given more choices for how they play their games. Apple may be farther behind in gaming-specific software, but its hardware is probably already in gamers' pockets, while Microsoft is introducing another powerful device in the growing handheld space. While gamers with other systems may not flock to Apple products to play, those who only own iPhones, iPads and Macs are getting more options for what they play, especially as they've started getting more powerful titles that debut on PC and consoles. Last year, the company announced that modern games like Resident Evil 7 and 8 would be playable on its devices, from MacBooks to iPhones. Apple's gaming ambitions do rely on game developers and publishers to make their games compatible with its devices. While we are in an era of increasing availability of games releasing on multiple platforms at launch, ports of games to Macs are much rarer, and Apple will have to continue laboring to convince the games industry to make games for their computers, which still only make up just over 10% of the PC market, according to a late 2024 Canalys report. Apple has a much greater hold on the phone market, so they have a greater base for gaming on iPhones. It's unquestionable that releasing games as demanding as Resident Evil 7 and 8 on iPhones is an admirable feat that speaks to the power of modern Apple handsets. But do gamers want to play such intense titles on phones with a separate controller (or even touch controls)? Microsoft's moves will likely appeal to more conventional gamers looking for a powerful device to play games they already own on the go. Microsoft's approach to lean into handhelds follows a relatively recent rise of handheld PCs, which kicked off with the Steam Deck in 2022. But with that popular system already showing its age, the newer and more powerful ROG Xbox Ally models (the standard Xbox Ally and beefed-up Xbox Ally X) will likely be able to get higher graphics quality and framerates than Valve's handheld. Microsoft's approach is more self-contained, too. While the ROG Xbox Ally models both have a 7-inch display that's only a bit bigger than the largest 6.86-inch screen on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Microsoft's devices have integrated controllers on either side with buttons and thumbsticks. It will be easy to pick them up and play, while iPhone players will have to wirelessly connect gamepads and prop up their smartphones on a wall or object. It's worth noting that Microsoft's handheld will have the additional advantage of its operating system, and while we're still in the early days of handhelds running Windows 11, it's still the most popular PC OS for playing games -- and they'll be able to run game mods, Microsoft acknowledged in an official post. The select few media members who got an early look at the handheld this weekend were reportedly impressed by the ease of switching between different game launchers, from Xbox to Activision Blizzard's to Epic, to play games siloed in each. Players who already own games in those launcher libraries will conceivably be able to use them on the Xbox Ally without having to re-buy them. Apple's Games app aims to even the playing field in software -- it works like a launcher, and should make it easier to sort through and play the many games on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. While gamers won't be able to transfer the versions they already bought on other platforms, Apple has a similar buy-anywhere approach within its device lineup, so they'll be able to pay for one copy of the game and play on their iPhone or M-series Mac. While neither company will revolutionize gaming, the Games app in iOS 26 and other Apple software updates are expected to arrive in September or October, and the ROG Xbox Ally models are expected to arrive by the end of the year. The holidays will see another evolution in the way both tech giants appeal to gamers.
