Sip smarter this summer: Discover the 'Magic of Moderate Drinking' with these simple tips

Daily Mail30-07-2025
Summer is the season for socialising, from music festivals and garden parties to laid-back picnics in the park.
If you're someone who enjoys a tipple on social occasions, drinking better, not more, will make these moments more memorable than ever.
Diageo, the maker of iconic brands such as Guinness, Johnnie Walker and Gordon's, are here to help you celebrate to the fullest by sharing four simple, effective tips to keep in mind.
And once you've read them, be sure to head over to the DRINKiQ quiz to test your knowledge of all things drinking...
Here's to a summer of music, laughter and good times - all thanks to the Magic of Moderate drinking!
How to make a refreshing 0.0% pink paloma
Fruity and sweet with sour notes, the 0.0% pink paloma is a cross between a paloma and gin fizz. It's supremely summery and bursting with fragrant flavour! Here's how to make one -
What you'll need - 50ml Gordon's 0.0% Premium Pink, 150ml pink grapefruit soda, one grapefruit wedge, one pinch of salt for rim, one highball glass.
Method
1. Rim glass with salt.
2. Add Gordon's 0.0% Premium Pink and the pink grapefruit soda to the glass filled with ice and stir to mix.
3. Garnish with pink grapefruit.
1. Measure your drinks
Keeping track of your alcohol consumption is key to ensuring you stay within your limits.
As the old saying goes, knowledge is power. Or in this case, the power to drink responsibly!
If you're drinking spirits at a summer gathering, opting for measured single serves makes it much easier to work out how much you've had.
It can be tricky to count drinks when your glass is topped up halfway through, so try to wait until you've finished your drink before accepting a refill.
And when hosting, use a spirits jigger to measure out each serve so you don't accidentally add more alcohol than you meant to.
2. Space out your drinks with water
It's always important to drink plenty of water, but especially when drinking.
So water is key to keeping the good times going - particularly when it's hot.
Alternating drinks with a cold glass with ice and lemon will help you pace yourself and ensure you're enjoying every sip without overdoing it.
3. Pair drinks with delicious food
You must eat tasty food, and plenty of it! See what we mean when we say responsible drinking is about having MORE fun rather than less?
Great food doesn't just elevate any celebration; it also slows alcohol absorption - helping to keep the good times balanced.
If you're hosting, a well-chosen selection of nibbles is guaranteed to be a hit with your guests, while also providing a chance to show off your cooking skills.
A nice touch is to choose foods that complement the taste of particular drinks - providing people with even more of an incentive to take a bite.
4. Explore alcohol-free options
The number of alcohol-free drinks choices has boomed in recent years, with many bars providing a separate menu of delicious alcohol-free options.
It's well worth taking a look if you want to take the night off booze without compromising on the experience.
Or you could try the technique known as zebra-striping, where you switch each alcoholic drink with an alcohol-free one.
This naturally reduces the amount of alcohol you have without feeling like you're missing out in social settings.
Whatever your approach, the key is to savour every moment and embrace the magic of moderation.
With thoughtful choices, you can make this summer memorable for all the right reasons.
Drink responsibly. The UK Chief Medical Officers advise that to keep the risk from alcohol low, adults should not regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week.

Holly Willoughby wows in a white swimsuit as she lives it up on the beach during sun-soaked Portuguese holiday with sister Kelly

took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a carefree swimsuit-clad snap with her followers as she continues to enjoy her sun-soaked holiday in Portugal. The former This Morning host, 44, looked sensational in a white one-piece as she relaxed on a boat, making the most of a well-deserved break. Her chic swimsuit featured a plunging neckline and hugged her figure perfectly, showing off her enviable physique. The presenter posed up a storm for the camera, accessorising her beachy look with oversized brown sunglasses while letting her wavy blonde locks blow freely in the breeze. She captioned the sun-drenched snap with a series of summery emojis, including a wave, sun and beach umbrella. It comes after Holly and her lookalike sister Kelly gave an insight into their holiday on Tuesday as they smiled against the sunset. The TV presenter, who owns a plush villa in the Algarve, looked stunning in a patterned one-shouldered dress. Completing her summery look, she styled her hair into beachy waves and opted for minimal makeup. Kelly wore a plunging white linen dress, which was cinched in at the waist with a wrap-around belt. The siblings shared a selfie from a balcony and captioned the update: 'Always better together.' Holly frequently spends her summer at her £2 million holiday home at a luxury resort on the Algarve. Holly's summer break comes after she faced a string of blows on her presenting gigs. Her Netflix show Celebrity Bear Hunt was axed after just one series following claims that it was too expensive to produce. It came months after her other mainstream programme, Dancing On Ice, was axed in March, while she also decided to step down from presenting duties on You Bet! Having been the darling of TV for several years, Holly is still in huge demand with a plethora of options open to her as she navigates this tricky stage in her career. According to The Sun, one option could be the reboot of the classic series Record Breakers, which her TV producer husband Dan Baldwin, 50, is currently working on. A source told the production that Holly would be the 'perfect fit' for the show, which at present is in its early stages and currently does not have a channel attached. They explained: 'Record Breakers is likely to be a prime-time hit, and it would make perfect sense for Holly to take the reins. She has worked alongside Dan before and the pair know what it takes to make great telly.' Meanwhile, Holly has also been linked to the revival of Cilla Black's Blind Date, alongside the likes of Claudia Winkleman and Davina McCall. Originally, rumours suggested the ITV hit would make a comeback on the BBC, but now sources claim the love-match show will reboot on Disney+. In March, Holly was tipped to become the next Cilla, with the presenter lining up a string of big-money deals worth up to £10million. The revival was previously being considered by Holly's husband, Dan Baldwin, and the star had previously stepped into Cilla's shoes when she hosted a reboot of Surprise Surprise. An insider told The Sun at the time: 'There might not sound like obvious parallels between Holly and Cilla, but they're both two of the biggest stars of modern telly. 'Emulating Cilla isn't just about taking on her shows, it's as much about carving out a niche as a solo presenter with serious clout in the world of telly. 'But together with her husband Dan, they form the ultimate power couple in TV. She has the public appeal that gets viewers tuning in, while he has a track record of making hugely successful TV shows.' The Daily Mail contacted Holly's representatives for comment at the time. She has long been a familiar face on both ITV and ITV2, hosting shows including Surprise Surprise, Celebrity Juice, The Games, The Xtra Factor, and I'm A Celebrity. Holly is arguably best known for having fronted This Morning alongside Phillip Schofield from 2009 until 2023, while she also helmed Dancing On Ice from 2006.

The return of alcopops: sales are booming – and the reason is worrying

Name: Alcopops Age: About 30 years old, give or take. Appearance: Brightly coloured, bottle-shaped. Like alcoholic drinks, but for kids? That was the worry when alcopops rose to prominence in the 1990s. Sweet and luridly hued, with 'fun' names including Two Dogs, Hoopers Hooch, Tilt, Lemonhead and WKD, they seemed designed especially to appeal to young drinkers. I remember now. Whatever happened to them? Alcopops were the subject of a moral panic that led to bad publicity, duty rises and bans from major pub chains and supermarkets. But mostly they succumbed to a sharp decline in drinking by young people. So they just disappeared? Almost completely. Sales plummeted and brands vanished. Even the Bacardi Breezer was discontinued in 2015. RIP Alcopops – you taught a whole generation to throw up in every colour of the rainbow. Not so fast. Reports of the death of alcopops have proved premature. You mean … they're back? That's right – the fabled Bacardi Breezer is hitting the shelves again this summer – now known simply as Breezer – in zingy flavours including orange, lime and watermelon. Yuck. 'RTDs are booming,' said Steve Young, Bacardi UK's business unit director, back in May. RTDs? Ready-to-drink beverages, the preferred name for alcopops among those that market them. See also FABs (flavoured alcoholic beverages). Is it just Breezers? Nope. Drinks giant Diageo has launched a new campaign across 20 countries to restore the fortunes of Smirnoff Ice, amid a near doubling in RTD sales over the last decade, fuelled by new brands including BuzzBallz. How have these RTDs managed to overcome the inexorable decline in alcohol consumption? Gen Z have started drinking again. They have? A recent study showed that in March 2025 the proportion of UK gen Z consumers who drank alcohol in the last six months was 76%, up from 66% in 2023. That seems pretty worrying … Who cares? The sector is saved! I'm really not ready for a whole new era of Technicolor sick. Relax. While gen Z may drink more frequently than they once did, they're not necessarily drinking more. And alcopops have slyly adapted to their new habits. How? In part by being less alcoholic. In their original formulations alcopops mostly hovered around 5% alcohol. The new Breezers are just 3.4%. Do say: 'The return of alcopops is just the latest attempt to monetise 90s nostalgia.' Don't say: 'Drink responsibly, but more often.'

Why Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos haven't filmed their morning show together in almost two weeks

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have raised eyebrows after separately missing multiple days of filming on their LIVE with Kelly and Mark morning show. The husband-and-wife duo rarely miss an episode together, but Kelly, 54, has been noticeably out all week. It comes just days after Mark, also 54, missed multiple shows last week. The absences have left the couple to film with celebrity co-hosts instead of with each other, along with causing concern among longtime viewers of the show. Making things even stranger is that both Kelly and Mark were recently making the promotional rounds together for their ESPN docuseries, Running with the Wolves. Thankfully, there's an innocent explanation for why the couple are spending some time apart. Kelly is currently on her summer vacation, leaving husband Mark to film with the likes of Jenna Dewan and Jackie Tohn. It comes after Kelly was left to the front the series without Mark last week. She confirmed on a July 29 episode that Mark was busy 'working on a show out in LA', which is why he couldn't be at ABC's New York studios where LIVE with Kelly and Mark is filmed. She was joined by several celebrity fill-in hosts while he was gone, including actor Jerry O'Connell and ABC anchor David Muir. Kelly has been a permanent co-host on the long-running morning show since 2001, while husband Mark joined her in 2023. The couple's temporary on-air break comes shortly after Kelly revealed what annoys her the most about Mark. Kelly got candid about her near–three–decade marriage during a recent appearance on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast. 'He doesn't listen to me frequently, and he will tune me out while we're live on the air,' she confessed. 'When you are being paid, highly paid by the way, to literally listen to me, then you have to listen,' she continued. 'I watch him drift away and I'm like, "Hey, hey, don't do that!"' Kelly's brutal honesty comes as she also admitted she is repulsed by his timing in the bedroom. 'I find it disgusting,' she said, explaining that Mark, also 54, prefers to have sex 'only in the morning.' But that's not all — she said he's also eager to kiss her first thing in the morning, which she finds anything but sexy. 'I have a retainer in. I gotta rip that out,' she said. 'And he's got his nasal strips on. It's like we are the most repulsive, disgusting [people].' She didn't stop there, adding with a laugh: 'I'm already pre–disgusted for tomorrow morning.' The longtime couple met on the set of All My Children back in 1995 and tied the knot the following year. They've since welcomed three children together: Michael, 28, Lola, 24, and Joaquin, 22.
