‘Bones' of contention: The criticism surrounding Jon Jones and the UFC heavyweight title explained

Over 1,80,000 people have signed a petition demanding that the UFC strip reigning heavyweight champion Jon 'Bones' Jones of his title. For newcomers to MMA, Jones' dominance can be likened to that of Ricky Ponting in cricket — a serial winner. With 13 title defences to his name, the American wrestler is one of the sport's all-time greats. But growing frustration among fans and analysts has reached a tipping point. The accusation? That Jones is leveraging his superstar status to delay fights. While most UFC fighters step into the octagon two or three times a year, Jones has managed that just once in the last 11 years — in 2019, when he defended his belt against Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos. Since moving up to heavyweight from light heavyweight in 2023, he's fought just twice. His most recent victory came via a third-round knockout of Stipe Miocic — a win that sent Miocic into retirement. However, three of Jones' last five wins have gone to decision, including a controversial split verdict over Santos in 2019. So what's holding him back? Age might be one factor — Jones is now 37. The heavyweight division demands an enormous level of endurance, and recovery takes longer. But injuries have played a more immediate role. A torn pectoral tendon forced him out of his 2023 clash with Miocic at UFC 295. That was followed by elbow surgery, delaying his return further. Then there's the off-cage chaos. Jones' career has been repeatedly derailed by legal troubles and out-of-competition controversies — DUIs, hit-and-run incidents, domestic violence allegations, and multiple failed drug tests. These missteps have led to suspensions, vacated titles, and long stretches of inactivity. What now for Bones? While the UFC hasn't officially announced his next opponent, the obvious challenger is Tom Aspinall. Aspinall made an emphatic statement by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in just over a minute to claim the interim title after Jones pulled out of their scheduled bout. He followed that with another first-round finish, this time against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. Despite his momentum, Aspinall remains stuck with the 'interim' tag — a placeholder while Jones stays inactive. Aspinall recently claimed he's 'moving on' and believes Jones is 'retired.' But Jones responded with a cryptic message: 'A lot of stuff is happening behind the scenes,' adding that legal constraints are stopping him from sharing details. So will Aspinall finally get his shot? Or will the title — and the division — remain in limbo?

'That's a real super fight' - Jon Jones issues a bold statement upon potential return of a former heavyweight to the Octagon

Instead, it is the former reigning heavyweight champion and the inaugural PFL heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, whom Bones has shown interest in. Ngannou parted ways with the UFC in 2023 when both parties could not reach common ground for the renewal of the fighter's contract. However, recently speculations are being made about a potential return of the fighter to the Octagon . Francis Ngannou in talks to return to the UFC, jeopardises Tom Aspinall 's chances for the championship belt as Jon Jones expresses interest in facing the former champion It has been the longest time since fans and the UFC heavyweight interim champion, Tom Aspinall called out Jon Jones for the heavyweight unification bout, only to be ignored by the latter. Several instances have popped up since then, asking the fighter to either announce the bout against Aspinall or simply get stripped of the title. Fans around the world have also issued a petition that has neared 200,000 signatures requesting the UFC to strip Bones of his heavyweight title. Up until now, nothing concrete has come out of the initiative, and instead, Jones mocked the petition, nullifying it through his posts on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 12000W лазерен заваръчен апарат (4 в 1) – революция в заваряването! Undo While the controversy is still very much afresh, the heavyweight champion recently revealed his interest in defending the title through a post on social media. However, it is not Aspinall as everyone would think. Instead, it is one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time as well as the former heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou. Ngannou's contract with the UFC came to an end in mid-December 2022, but the fighter and the promotion could not reach common ground in order to renew the contract, leading to the Predator exiting the promotion after getting stripped of his title. Head coach Eric Nicksick, in a recent interview, revealed that the fighter is very much in talks for a potential return to the Octagon. The news has raised eyebrows, particularly the attention of the current heavyweight who wrote on X, 'I'm hearing Francis Ngannou is still interested… now we're talking. That's a real super fight. A clash of champions, not just hype. He held the UFC belt, I've defended mine for over a decade. Two kings from different roads. Not just one legend facing a mouth that's hot right now, but two real legacies colliding. That's the kind of fight that actually adds something special to my story. At least from my point of view.' With the fighter expressing his interest in facing the former heavyweight, this might jeopardise the chances of Aspinall having a shot at the championship belt. While nothing has been confirmed officially, the world of MMA awaits one of the most anticipated announcements of all time.

UFC 316: 'I just like beating people up,' says Kevin Holland ahead of Vicente Luque fight

This weekend's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will see one of its most active fighters enter the ring at the Prudential Centre in New Jersey. Veteran Kevin Holland will share the cage with fellow old-timer Vicente Luque in a welterweight bout on Sunday. The event will be headlined by the bantamweight title bout between reigning champion Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O'Malley. Holland, who equalled the record of most fights (5) in a year back in 2020, will be back in action for his third fight of 2025. The mantra behind being active is simple for Holland. 'It doesn't matter if the fight is pay-per-view or fight night; I'm just happy to get out there and put one out for the people,' the 32-year-old said in an interaction with Sportstar. 'I'm annoying, and the matchmakers know it. So, they just book me before I get annoyed,' he added. From Khamzat Chimaev to current division champion Jack Della Maddalena, Holland has seen it all in his division. His upcoming challenge is expected to be extremely challenging. With 20 finishes in 23 wins, Luque could pose a strong threat to Holland, who has an equally impressive 22 finishes in 27 bouts. 'For me, all the fighters are the same. We think about them one way, but they get grapple heavy. So, I'm ready for his grappling, and his are pretty understandable, and I'll be careful about that as well,' Holland said. 'Don't think it'll be hard, and hopefully I've prepared right. I've been doing this for a long time. Regardless of the changes we make during training, what is important is to make changes on the fly inside the cage,' he added. Holland has been in and out of the top 15 rankings of his division, and three losses in his last five bouts meant he was pushed out of the table. A win would put him back into the top 15, paving the way for a shot at the belt. However, Holland emphasises that the UFC is much more than just numbers. 'For me, all wins are important, and I don't really stress on numbers. I just like beating people up. I'll just show up looking to win,' he concluded.
