Remember ‘The Biggest Loser'? Docuseries ‘Fit for TV' explores the harm the show did in the name of health

Millions of Americans watched for 18 seasons as people pushed their bodies to the limits physically, ate as few calories as possible, and underwent sometimes mortifying challenges to be crowned 'The Biggest Loser.'
It was discomfort worth grappling with for a shot at better health and a new life, many of the contestants said. But 'Fit for TV: The Reality of 'The Biggest Loser,'' a Netflix docuseries premiering Friday, suggests that the cultural phenomenon may not have been healthy for the contestants or the country at large.
When creating the new show, filmmakers asked themselves whether 'The Biggest Loser' was, in fact, part of an industry promoting health and wellness in the United States, said Skye Borgman, the director of the docuseries. 'Everybody always wants a magic bullet that's real. And the thing about magic bullets — they're never real.'
'Fit for TV: The Reality of 'The Biggest Loser'' investigates how the highly popular show affected the contestants and conversations around health. The docuseries also explores the implications of so many viewers being willing to watch –– and sometimes laugh at –– people attempting to lose weight.
'It was such a huge phenomenon and absolutely reflected and perpetuated some of the really harmful messages around weight and weight loss,' said Dr. Rebecca Pearl, associate professor of clinical and health psychology at the University of Florida.
In a show claiming to transform people's health, what did the contestants' regimens look like?
Men were advised to cut their calories down to 1,500 to 2,000 per day and women to 1,200 per day, said Dr. Robert Huizenga, physician on 'The Biggest Loser,' in the series. But sometimes, trainers might have recommended as few as 800 calories daily, he added.
The amount of exercise was also intense, sometimes spanning eight hours a day, former contestant Danny Cahill said in the docuseries.
The series showed clips of contestants dropping to the floor from a treadmill run, many people vomiting in the gym, and instances when caffeine pills were utilized to curb appetite.
'There's not any way that an entertaining show and a health show can 100% exist together. … One of them is always going to take the lead,' Borgman said. 'In the case of 'The Biggest Loser,' I feel like the entertainment value of the show far outran the health aspects of the show.'
An extreme diet and exercise regimen is associated with significant health risks, Pearl said. Losing too much weight too quickly or not getting enough calories can lead to gallbladder complications, muscle loss and nutritional deficits, she said. Overexercising can result in heart problems, dehydration and injury –– which also prevents people from maintaining healthy behaviors.
Eating a balanced diet and getting movement in your day is generally good for health, but the punishing approach to food and exercise showcased on 'The Biggest Loser' also worked against long-term health-promoting activities, Pearl added.
'One predictor and one recommendation for engaging in physical activity long term is to find an activity you enjoy,' she said. 'The kind of grueling, suffering activity that was shown on that show is not setting someone up to build a healthy, positive relationship with physical activity or with their body.'
One theme that may have kept viewers coming back to the show was the hope that someone could make a dramatic, lasting change to their body. But a weight loss transformation that stood the test of time wasn't always necessarily the result even in 'The Biggest Loser,' Borgman said.
A 2017 study following 14 contestants in the years after 'The Biggest Loser' wrapped found that many regained much or all the weight they had lost over the course of the show.
The return of the weight makes sense, said Dr. Larissa McGarrity, clinical psychologist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at University of Utah Health. The degree of calorie restriction and intensity of exercise were at levels that neither the contestants nor the viewers could implement at home in a realistic way, she said. Also, the amount of weight lost from week to week was extreme.
At times, show participants were losing up to double digits at each weekly weigh in. Experts tend to recommend a sustainable weight loss rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week, McGarrity said — adding that the best guidance is to utilize the methods you can keep up long-term.
'The answer instead is probably, 'how do I slowly make changes in my life that help me to get in the right nutrients to help my body feel good? How do I move in a way that will allow my body and mind to feel at its best over time?'' she said. 'Making too many changes at once tends to not go well for most people from a psychological or behavioral standpoint.'
Even if viewers at home could implement the stringent protocol followed by 'The Biggest Loser' contestants, research suggests metabolic changes from the dramatic weight loss depicted on the show made it harder to keep the weight off.
Six years after contestants were on the show, the 14 studied on average still had a slower metabolisms, even if they had regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost, according to the study. Their bodies were naturally burning fewer calories throughout the day and increasing hunger cues.
'It essentially means that keeping the weight off long term is nearly impossible without continued extreme measures over many years, because your body will fight against you to maintain that weight or defend that weight at that initially higher level,' McGarrity said.
Often interwoven into 'The Biggest Loser' –– from coaches, in depictions of bodies, and in the audience interactions –– was a lot of shame, McGarrity said.
The format supported a myth around weight: that the size of a person's body is totally under their control, and having a larger body is a sign of lack of willpower or moral failing, she said.
That myth ignores the realities of things like genetics, environment and individual metabolisms, and it paves the way for denigration and callousness, she said.
'Cruelty, verbal abuse, sort of indirect physical abuse, in terms of being forced to really torture your body in unhealthy ways –– there was a sense that if you're in a larger body, you deserve this,' said Oona Hanson, a parent coach who specializes in helping families navigate diet culture and eating disorders.
'It made us participate as viewers in kind of like a pity or even disgust response in terms of the way people's bodies were portrayed, in the way they talked about their bodies,' she added.
The docuseries showed just how dehumanizing or degrading those images could be, with cameras shaking as contestants fell to make it look like they caused an earthquake or challenges asking contestants to carry whole loaves of bread in their mouths.
'Without really being completely aware of it, the show succeeded in making fun of fat people,' Borgman said.
Some contestants did say that they found empowerment and representation in being part of a competition in which they succeeded in goals and accomplished physical feats, she added. But it isn't hard to find a clip from 'The Biggest Loser' in which contestants are put in disparaging situations, Pearl added.
Content that stigmatizes the size of a person's body and emphasizes thinness at all costs impacts not just the contestants, but also the viewers at home, Hanson said. It's hard for those viewers not to internalize those negative stereotypes, affecting how people see their communities and themselves.
'The Biggest Loser' may have been canceled years ago, but 'Fit for TV' shares that the reality show's lasting influence underscores the fact that the United States has not elevated the way people talk about weight and bodies, Borgman added.
'We as a culture feel like we're super evolved. … We don't judge. We take people for who they are,' she said. 'I don't think that's true at all. So, I hope people walk away from this series and look at themselves a little bit more and how we treat people.'

When a couple stops having sex, it doesn't just affect things in the bedroom — it often puts a strain on the entire relationship. If both partners are content with little to no sex, then those dry spells (which are quite common, by the way) may not pose a problem. But in relationships in which one or both partners value their sex lives, a dead bedroom can bring up painful emotions, fears and resentments that just push them further and further apart. 'They decide it is easier to have no sex at all than to deal with the hurt feelings and unpredictable emotions, such as guilt or anger.' A number of factors can give way to a period of sexlessness: physical or mental health conditions, having kids, stress, mismatched libidos and communication issues, to name a few. We asked women who have lived through sexless marriages to reveal what the experience was like for them and how it affected their relationships. For privacy reasons, some respondents' last names have been withheld or a pseudonym has been used. Interviews have been lightly edited and condensed for clarity. 'Not Good Enough' 'I didn't want anyone to know about my sexless marriage so I hid behind a smiling facade. Inside, I was drowning in a maelstrom of emotions: shame over experiencing pain from intercourse (instead of orgasms), then not wanting sex altogether. Fear that the pain was serious, my body damaged, defective. Disappointment in myself that I was not the sexual woman I'd imagined myself to be when I married the man of my dreams. Anger that this was not how it's supposed to be — this was not the dream. Confusion over why I didn't want sex with the man I loved. And powerlessness — over everything. I tried to will myself to be sexual. It wasn't working, which led to more of the same — shame, fear, disappointment, anger. With every gynecologist I saw, every test I ran, I got the same response: There was nothing wrong with me physically. 'Then it must be me and my sexuality. I'm the one who's broken here,' I concluded. My biggest fear — that I am not good enough as a woman and as a wife — permeated almost every thought and preoccupied me day and night. I blamed my body for being fat, not sexy, not worthy of sex — which led me to put on an 40 extra pounds. But the most painful part was that I felt so alone. My heart was hurting — but I did not have the words (or permission) to confide vulnerably in my husband about this inner struggle. I was on my own. All I knew was to act out my frustrations and fears — with angry remarks, followed by apologies — that only made me hate myself more and drew us further apart.' —Irene Fehr Related: 'Deep Loneliness' 'In my experience, a sexless marriage begins when conversation dies and then it's a natural progression to physical and spiritual celibacy between two people. Even writing these words draws up those feelings of deep loneliness and feeling unloved. I guess he may have felt the same except he was still trying to initiate physical sex but without putting in the effort to kindle desire through attention and conversation. Ultimately, the state of the marriage was impacting my health: I went into depression and my weight went up to more than 350 pounds. I could not contemplate creating a new life as I was utterly detached from who I had been pre-marriage. I was lost. I am forever grateful to a dear friend who wrote to me about my health. It was the first step in acknowledging the truth of my life at that time and then initiating plans for a better future. Looking back, I don't regret this time of my life, as I have learned from the experience and my life is full of titillating, scintillating and hilarious conversations with the person I love. Even though we might only do the horizontal tango a few times a month, we are committed to celebrating each other every single day: small acts of kindness, a pinch on the bum, and a slow kiss every morning and night.' ― Susan Jarvis 'I Felt Guilty' 'I went through a sexless period in my marriage, but the reason for that was entirely on my end. My husband had a high sex drive and still found me desirable, but I was almost never aroused. I had an undiagnosed chronic illness that messed with my hormones and libido. I still loved sex. I missed having sex. And I really enjoyed sex when I had it. I wanted more, but I could only bring myself to do it once every month or two. I felt frustrated because I wasn't able to give myself what I wanted. I felt guilty because I couldn't stop thinking that I had tied my husband down to this relationship and now he was cheated out of having a normal sex life. And I felt scared because I didn't know how long he'd put up with it. He said he was fine and that he loved me too much to live without me, but how long would he really put up with a sexless marriage? One year? Five years? Ten? After a years-long dry spell, I finally saw my way out of it. I started writing about sex and that helped. But it's going through hormonal replacement that really pushed things forward. My health is still very much a work in progress, but things are looking up and I'm back to having sex regularly.' ― Emma Austin 'I Was Shamed About My Body' 'Our relationship didn't start sexless. To the contrary, we had sex every day. It was wonderful and I felt alive. It was affirming. I've struggled with my self-esteem since I was a young gymnast, and here was this man that seemed to want me. Then it dropped off. My weight became an issue, reaffirming all my worst fears. Our relationship started with sex and it was intense. Our libidos matched, we could talk outside the bedroom about what we liked and didn't like and what we wanted to try next. When I moved in, all intimacy seemed to vanish overnight. It went from once every two weeks to once a month. He always had an excuse, he was tired, not feeling well, too busy. He would physically push me away and say 'Get off me.' It was devastating but I kept trying, I was so attracted to him. I knew what the problem was. He had gained weight and his overall health went downhill, resulting in little or no libido. But he never shared that with me, just deflected or made me feel bad about desiring my partner. The times we did have sex, there was no foreplay, no flirting in the kitchen, whispering dirty things in each other's ears. So once we were in bed, I wasn't ready and he complained. I ended up in tears more often than orgasm. One night, I said to him that the night before was fun and I would like us to go to bed together again. He jumped up, told me I was stressing him out and walked to the bedroom. He came out a few minutes later to apologize, but the damage was done. I stopped initiating and planned to leave. I hate feeling undesirable to the one man who is supposed to love me before all. I became terrified of his rejection. I was depressed and tried medication. I never cheated because I couldn't hurt him and also because I felt so unattractive. My partner doesn't want me, how could anyone else! The relationship is over. There were many other issues besides the lack of intimacy, but the lack of intimacy seemed to magnify all other problems. A hiker in a Tennessee state park died after picking up a rattlesnake that bit him in what was a rare fatality arising from a snake bite, the authorities said on Friday. The hiker, a man who was not publicly identified, was in Savage Gulf State Park in Gruetli-Laager, Tenn., around 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, Matthew Griffith, director for the Grundy County Emergency Association, said in an email. A witness told officials that the hiker had picked up a snake, which was believed to be a timber rattlesnake, and was bitten on a hand, Mr. Griffith said. It was not clear why the hiker picked up the snake. The hiker was a half mile along a trail. Emergency medical workers arrived and gave him CPR before transferring him to a hospital, where he died, Mr. Griffith said. Thousands of people in the United States are bitten by venomous snakes each year, but only about five bites annually prove to be fatal, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. More people would die if they did not seek medical care, the agency said. Fast walking is a key to longevity, research shows

Too busy to go to the gym? Don't worry — you can stay healthy by incorporating at least 15 minutes of fast walking into your everyday routine, new research suggests. In general, it's recommended that people commit to 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to see sufficient health benefits, said Dr. Wei Zheng, the study's corresponding author. But if 150 minutes is too difficult to manage, fast walking a minimum of 15 minutes every day can have the same health benefits. Zheng and a team of researchers recruited mostly low-income and Black study participants from 2002 to 2009, according to the study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. The nearly 85,000 participants were given a comprehensive questionnaire about their exercise habits, average time spent working out, walking speed and health. Then the participants complete a questionnaire about 16 years later, and the analysis began in 2023. We know 'fast walking is good compared to slow walking,' but there isn't much research on how many minutes you should spend fast walking on average, said Zheng, director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center and the Anne Potter Wilson Professor in Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. On average, study participants who fast walked for at least 15 minutes every day saw a nearly 20% reduction in premature death compared with a 4% reduction among participants who walked slowly for a total of more than three hours a day. 'We've actually known for quite a long time that walking speed correlates with outcomes, meaning the faster you walk, the better you do. And it certainly makes sense, because you can imagine, somebody who's in really bad shape is probably not going to be able to walk very quickly,' said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. He was not involved in the study. How walking can impact your health Walking has health benefits, such as managing weight and sugar intake, reducing risk of cancer, easing joint pain, and boosting immune function. Health experts 'know that when people are exercising regularly, blood vessels can relax and dilate a bit better. And then we also know that exercise is quite good for cholesterol, so it seems to lower cholesterol, and then overall, it reduces the risk of cancer and things that would otherwise hurt people,' Freeman said. Walking daily can also lower risk of dementia or cognitive decline in people predisposed to developing Alzheimer's, according to recent research. Engaging in daily physical activity, such as walking, promotes better sleep and reduces inflammation, which improves brain structure, according to the Piedmont Medical Center in South Carolina. 'I want to emphasize that these exercises, no matter slow or fast, all confirm some benefit,' Zheng said. 'But what we find is that fast walking as little as 15 minutes a day confirms substantiated benefits.' Fast walking has been found to have specific benefits, such as decreasing risk of heart failure, arrythmias and type 2 diabetes. '(T)he thought is that exercise has a very big effect on blood pressure, as you may know, and blood pressure, it is one of the more exponential risk factors that we have, for roughly every 20 points blood pressure goes above 120 (what is considered normal or healthy), the risk of a cardiac event roughly doubles,' Freeman said. 'So, it's a super potent and exponential risk factor, and we know that regular exercise lowers that.' Get your heart pumping In general, you can tell you're fast walking when you're able to talk but not sing, according to the United Kingdom's National Health Service. Alternatively, you can increase your walking pace by a couple of steps and track it with a metronome, according to a July study. 'I usually recommend that they get up before work, and they go for a brisk walk or a bike or a swim, or they do some high-intensity interval training, whatever it is that they're into,' Freeman said. People can go to 'a rec center, or they walk outside, if it is safe, or whatever it may be, and just weave it into their day.' Following good walking form, such as standing tall with your shoulders back and swinging your arms, can help prevent backaches, make it easy to breath and keep you balanced. 'Walking is a full body movement. It is not just about your lower body. It's not just one step in front of the one foot in front of the other,' said Dana Santas, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and mind-body coach in professional sports, in a previous article. 'Your arm swing is a huge part involved in the mechanics of walking. So, you want to have an arm swing that's coordinated with your foot movement, so it's opposing,' she added.
