Monty Panesar thinks Virat Kohli skipped the UK Test tour to avoid mid-series exclusion.
Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes Virat Kohli 'bailed out' of the five-Test tour of the UK in June because he was worried the team management would drop him mid-series. Speaking on Sunday, Panesar said that Kohli must have thought he'd 'call it a day' and give the youngsters a chance instead of facing that.
According to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Kohli reached out to his committee in April to convey his decision to retire from Tests. He announced it in May via a social media post, saying that the choice wasn't easy but 'felt right' because he had given the format everything he could in the 14 years since his debut in 2011.
Later, some people close to him, like Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh, said the decision surprised them because Kohli was preparing to feature in the England Tests and had the hunger to score a ton of runs.
'I think he was definitely going to play," Panesar told Hindustan Times. 'I think England were expecting, everyone was expecting him to play. I'm surprised he's kind of like bailed out. But maybe the fact that outside off-stump, he's just thinking, well, you know, they may have had a word with him. They said, look, if you don't score well in the first couple of Test matches, don't expect to play all the five. So, he's probably thinking, well, I'll just call it a day and give the youngsters a go," he added.
Kohli and Rohit Sharma's exits have indeed paved the way for several different players, both young and seasoned. Sai Sudharsan has earned his maiden Test call-up while Karun Nair has marked a return to the senior squad for the first time in eight years, while Shubman Gill has been appointed the captain.
'It would depend on how Karun Nair performs, he scored a double-hundred against the England Lions. He and Shubman Gill, that middle-order, how they bat. I think the batters who've played county cricket, if they are able to then transform that same form at the international level, then I think India have got a chance to win," he added.

But the left-handed India opener had hit a quality 64 in the second innings of the first unofficial Test. Among the bowlers, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed took 4/70 in the first innings while Tushar Deshpande chipped in with a couple. Kamboj took his tally to four wickets in the contest as he grabbed a two wickets each in the two innings. But more than the results, the matches held significance for the 19 Indian players involved. For 12 of them, it was a chance to prove their mettle in foreign conditions and make a case to the BCCI selection committee. For the remaining seven, it served as valuable preparation for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20. Although the India A team will remain in England for one final tour match—an intra-squad game against the Shubman Gill-led side in Beckenham starting next Monday (June 16)—seven players from the squad have now joined the senior team. These include Karun Nair, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Nitish Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, and Shardul Thakur. Ahead of the final preparatory game, here's a look at how these players have geared up for the England Test series. Karun Nair poised for No. 4 role: The veteran batter is not only set to make a return to the Indian Test XI for the firs time in eight years, but is poised for the vacant No. 4 role, which had belonged to Virat Kohli until his retirement last month. Thakur vs Reddy: Unfortunately, neither made a compelling case to make the playing XI. Reddy was the frontrunner in the battle of the all-rounders, after his performance in Australia, but despite the English conditions being more suitable to his pace-bowling variety, he struggled to get breakthroughs, managing just two wickets in two matches, while scoring 135 runs in four innings, including a fifty. Thakur, on the other hand, who had lost the race to make the Indian team for the Australia tour to the Andhra star last October, needed runs to make his case, but managed just 80 runs in three innings. More worryingly, his bowling failed to trouble the batters. In the first match, he picked up two wickets, but failed to get his name in the scoresheet in the second game.
