Pakistan stock market dips sharply amid escalating tensions with India
Shares at the PSX fell over 2,000 points in intraday trade amid uncertainty over speculation that India might launch military strikes against Pakistan.
On Tuesday evening, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar added to the uncertainty by claiming that Pakistan had credible intelligence that India intends to carry out military action against it in the next 24-36 hours.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting with the top defence brass gave them 'complete operational freedom' to decide on the mode, targets and timing of India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
The benchmark Karachi Stock Exchange-100 index decreased by 1,717.35 points, or 1.5 per cent, to stand at 113,154.83 on Wednesday morning from the last close of 114,872.18. At 10:38 am, the index declined by 2,073.42 points, or 1.8 per cent, from the last close.
Yousuf M Farooq, director of research at Chase Securities, said the decline was due to 'news of a likely attack in the next few days'.
Fatima Bucha of AKD Securities said investors' concerns increased following the information minister's press briefing. 'No doubt the market is under pressure,' she said.
All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Association President Atiq Mir said there was uncertainty in all business sectors due to the escalation in diplomatic and military tensions with India.
'Markets and shopping centres are not doing business as usual this week as everyone is more concerned about what will happen now,' he said.
Following the April 22 terror attack, India downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and announced a raft of measures, including expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post in view of the cross-border links to the attack.

A senior Pakistan Air Force official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Khyber Mail newspaper that 'the induction of this aircraft is a significant leap in our ability to shape the electronic warfare space. The Global 6000 equipped with HAVA SOJ provides us with a persistent high altitude electronic warfare capability, thereby strengthening our defence position.' Turkey has already converted several Global 6000 aircraft for the Air Force under its HAVA SOJ program, and Pakistan's variant has been specially designed keeping in mind regional threats.

Final nod for ₹62,000 crore deal to procure 97 more Tejas Mk1A jets
The government on Tuesday cleared the Rs 62,000 crore order to procure 97 additional indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A fighter jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), a defence source confirmed. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its final approval — marking the last step before the formal signing of the deal. The jets will be built by Bengaluru-headquartered HAL, a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence. This will mark the second order for the Mk1A fighter jets, with an earlier contract already placed with HAL for 83 aircraft at a cost of Rs 36,400 crore. HAL missed the original February 2024 deadline to start deliveries of the LCA Mk1A, primarily due to delays in the arrival of F404-IN20 engines from the American engine maker GE Aerospace. These jets are intended to replace the last of the IAF's Russian-origin MiG-21s, which are scheduled to retire in September. Amid the IAF's mounting challenges, HAL has assured that 12 Mk1A aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2025-26. The company has already built six, which are currently flying with reserve engines — a temporary measure. The second GE engine for the Mk1A was delivered to HAL in mid-July. The Tejas, an indigenous single-engine, fourth-generation multirole light fighter aircraft, has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency. It originates from the LCA programme launched in the 1980s to replace the IAF's ageing MiG-21 fleet — a goal now pursued through the operational Tejas MkI and the planned induction of the more advanced Mk1A variant.
