Senegal Stuns England: Historic 3-1 Victory Marks Tuchel's First Defeat

Morocco World11-06-2025
The England national team received a surprising defeat in their fourth match with Thomas Tuchel in a friendly against Senegal 3-1 on Tuesday at The City Ground in Nottingham, making it the first loss to an African team in their history.
Senegal managed to give the African continent the first victory over England. Senegal head coach Aliou Cissé told reporters after the match, 'We came here to prove that African teams can compete and win at the highest level. This is a proud moment for Senegal and Africa.'
Despite the defeat, Tuchel maintained his optimism by saying, 'Maybe we deserved more than that in terms of result … but I felt that we were not energetic enough for a long period of the game.'
England wasted no time, opening the scoring just seven minutes in. Anthony Gordon's initial shot forced a save from Edouard Mendy, but Harry Kane pounced on the rebound to tap it in.
Senegal gradually found their rhythm and responded just before halftime. A lapse in England's defense allowed Nicholas Jackson to set up Ismaila Sarr to score the equalizer.
Early in the second half, England trailed after Habib Diarra shot from a tight angle in the 62nd minute, after a pass from Kalidou Koulibaly.
Despite the substitutions, including the entry of Jude Bellingham for Declan Rice, the score remained the same. England appeared to have found an equalizer in the 84th minute through Bellingham, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
England's hopes for a late equalizer ended as substitute Cheikh Sobally sealed their defeat in stoppage time, striking in the 92nd minute on a counter-attack. The African side avenged their quarter-final loss in the 2022 World Cup.

Houcine Ammouta Parts Ways with Al Jazira

Al Jazira have confirmed the departure of head coach Houcine Ammouta following the club's defeat to Khorfakkan. The Emirati side announced the termination of his contract this week, thanking Ammouta and his backroom staff for their work and wishing them success in the future. The loss to Khorfakkan, in which Moroccan forward Tarik Tissoudali scored once and provided two assists, appears to have been a decisive factor. Ammouta joined Al Jazira in the summer of 2024 on a two-year deal, aiming to restore the club to the top of Emirati football. His spell, however, ends less than a year later. The 55-year-old has enjoyed a notable coaching career. With Jordan, he guided the national team to their first AFC Asian Cup final in 2023 and helped them top their World Cup qualifying group, laying the groundwork for the 2026 qualifiers and the 2027 Asian Cup. His approach, based on possession, high pressing and quick transitions, proved highly effective, bringing the best out of players such as Musa Al-Tamari and Yazan Al-Naimat. He stepped down from the Jordan post in June 2024 for personal reasons. His successor, Jamal Sellami, later led the side to their first World Cup qualification, building on the foundations Ammouta left behind. Tags: Al JaziraAmmoutaUAE

Sektioui: Hakimi Fully Deserves Ballon d'Or

Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui says Achraf Hakimi 'fully and rightfully' deserves to win the Ballon d'Or. Speaking after Morocco's 3-1 win over Zambia in the African Nations Championship, Sektioui said: 'I was alongside him during the Olympics; he is an outstanding player. He has enormous qualities, but he also has enormous values as a person. That's what makes his quality, and it's exactly what's reflected on the pitch.' Sektioui added that Hakimi has maintained a very high level for the past four to five years. 'It's a source of pride for us, it's a source of pride for Moroccan football. For me, he fully deserves the Ballon d'Or.' On the match, Sektioui said his side were more efficient in attack compared with their previous game, creating several chances and forcing Zambia to retreat. 'The video session we held paid off thanks to the maturity and intelligence of the players,' he said, adding that they missed seven or eight scoring opportunities. He spoke highly about the players' fighting spirit and thanked those from Raja, AS FAR and RS Berkane for their contribution after being called up. Achraf Hakimi is now the third most decorated African footballer after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. The victory takes Hakimi's career total to 17 trophies, placing him behind only Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Touré, who each have 18. At 26, Hakimi is close to surpassing both to become Africa's most decorated player. This bolsters his position among Africa's most successful footballers, with the opportunity to equal or break the record soon. His performances for club and country this year have kept him in contention for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, to be awarded in September. Tags: Ballon D'orCHAN 2024HakimiMoroccoPSGsektioui

Hakimi Enters Africa's Top Three Most Decorated Players

Achraf Hakimi is now the third most decorated African footballer after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. PSG recovered from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 with Tottenham in Udine, before winning 4-3 on penalties. Hakimi contributed to the attack with one chance created, five crosses—one completed—and two successful long passes from six attempts. He completed 69 of 83 passes, an accuracy rate of 83%. Defensively, the Moroccan international won two of three tackles and was not beaten in a one-on-one throughout the match. While less advanced in his attacking runs than in previous games, he maintained a key role on the right flank, particularly in the closing stages as PSG pushed for an equaliser. The victory takes Hakimi's career total to 17 trophies, placing him behind only Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Touré, who each have 18. At 26, Hakimi is close to surpassing both to become Africa's most decorated player. He reacted to the win by posting photographs from the celebrations on social media. His performances for club and country this year have kept him in contention for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, to be awarded in September. Hakimi's latest title bolsters his position among Africa's most successful footballers, with the opportunity to equal or break the record soon.
